1099 Pro Enterprise C/S MS SQL Server Page 1 Overview There are three primary phases to setting up 1099 Pro Enterprise C/S on your network. Each one needs to done in the proper order, as each relies on information or settings made in the previous step. They are: Phase 1 - Installing and attaching the database in SQL Server This is a simple process that starts with installing the 1099 Pro database files on your server. You then use the MS SQL Enterprise Manager to create a Login and attach the 1099 Pro database. Phase 2 Install the WebUpdate (primary) Workstation on a shared network drive The WebUpdate Workstation is the primary install of the program. It is the one workstation that has the capability to download and install newer versions of the program using the Internet (called Web Updates), and also provides the common location for important information that is shared with all other workstations. Any time the copy of 1099 Pro on this particular workstation is updated, all other client workstations will automatically update themselves the next time they use the 1099 Pro program. The WebUpdate Workstation install includes one extra step where you specify how all of the 1099 Pro workstations will connect to your database. This is a required step -- you will not be able to install the program without ensuring that your database connection information is correct. This only needs to be done once, however. When you have specified a valid connection for the WebUpdate Workstation, all other 1099 Pro client workstations will automatically use that information. It also provides an extra option to create a special SETUP.INI file that can help automate the process of installing all other 1099 Pro clients. Phase 3 - Install as many 1099 Pro client Workstations as desired We recommend placing the ProAll_CS_07.EXE on a shared network driver, along with the optional SETUP.INI you had the opportunity to create in phase 2. With a SETUP.INI, it only takes a few clicks to install 1099 Pro on any client Workstation. Note that although the steps listed above may seem complicated, they can generally be accomplished in a just few minutes. The following pages will provide step-by-step instructions for each phase.
Page 2 MS SQL Server 1099 Pro Enterprise C/S (This page intentionally left blank)
1099 Pro Enterprise C/S MS SQL Server Page 3 Phase 1 Installing and attaching the database Step 1: Install/copy the 1099 Pro Database Files to Your Server Run the ProAll_CS_07.EXE program to install the 1099 Pro Enterprise Edition data files. You will need your 1099 Pro registration code. This is located on your invoice for the 2007 Enterprise Edition. Make a note of the location where you place the files. You will need it during Step 2. Once you have the files on your server, then you are ready to setup the database itself. To do this, you must run the SQL Server Enterprise Manager program. Once you have Enterprise Manager running you will need to perform the following three steps, in sequence (each step relies on something you did in the prior step.) Tip - The Enterprise Manager is usually located on the database server machine, and can be found at: Start, Programs, Microsoft SQL Server then Enterprise Manager. Step 2: Add a SQL Server User Login for Pro1099 NOTE: If you already have a prior year versions of 1099 Pro C/S installed, you will already have a Pro1099 login so you can proceed directly to step 3. The login is used to give the 1099 Pro program permission to connect to your SQL Server database. Expand the tree by double clicking on the Microsoft SQL Servers and SQL Server Groups branches until you see the name of the SQL Server instance where you installed the 1099 Pro data files. Double click on the name of that instance so that you can see the various items like Databases, Management and Security. Double click on Security to expand it, then right click on Login. Choose New login from the menu. Enter the Login Name exactly like this: Pro1099 (no spaces) Select SQL Server Authentication Enter a Password for this Login. You can use any password you like, just be sure to make a note of it, as you will need it in Phase 2 when you set up the connection information for your 1099 Pro workstations. (NOTE: SQL Server passwords are case-sensitive.) Click on the OK button to save the new login. You will be asked to confirm password. Enter the same password used above. You are now ready to attach the database files.
Page 4 MS SQL Server 1099 Pro Enterprise C/S Step 3: Attaching the 1099 Pro Database to the Server During this step you will connect the 1099 Pro database to the Server (called attaching a database). Right click on Databases. Select All Tasks, then Attach Database. Click on browse, then navigate your way to the same location you selected earlier when you installed/copied the 1099 Pro MDF file. Select the file named Pro109907_Data.MDF, then press OK to return to the attach window (see Figure 1.) Figure 1 - Attaching the database to MS SQL Server As shown in Figure 1, the Attach as: field should be automatically set to: Pro In the Specify database owner: field, be sure that the owner is the new Login you created in Step 2: Pro1099 If needed, drop down the list of owners (logins) and select Pro1099. Click OK to finish attaching the database. This completes the initial installation of the database. Next, you will install the WebUpdate Workstation version of your new Pro software. Step 4: Setting the default database for the Pro 1099 User Login During this step you will set the default database for the User Pro1099. refer to Step 2 to get back to the login properties screen for the Pro1099 User In the User setup screen click on the drop down menu under defaults user database select the Pro database you attached in step 3. Click OK to confirm the change.
1099 Pro Enterprise C/S MS SQL Server Page 5 Phase 2 Install the WebUpdate (primary) Workstation IMPORTANT: The WebUpdate Workstation must be installed on a shared network drive so that other 1099 Pro workstations can access it for updates. The WebUpdate Workstation is the primary install of the program. It is the one workstation that has the capability to download and install newer versions of the program using the Internet (called Web Updates), and it also provides the common location for important information that is shared with all other workstations. This only needs to be done one time, unless you need to change your connection setup in the future. For example, if you needed to move the database to a different server or change the login password. Once you have specified a valid connection for the WebUpdate Workstation, all other 1099 Pro client workstations will automatically use that information. The WebUpdate Workstation install also provides an extra option to create a special SETUP.INI file that can help automate the process of installing all other 1099 Pro clients. We highly recommend taking advantage of that feature to simplify your other workstation installs. Getting ready: What you need before starting the install You will need the following items in order to complete a successful 1099 Pro WebUpdate installation: Your 1099 Pro Authorization/Registration code. This is located on your invoice. Access to a shared network folder where 1099 Pro can be installed. Be sure that all other 1099 Pro workstations will have access rights for this folder and below. The name of your SQL Server instance (not the physical server name, the SQL Server instance name.) The password you created for the SQL Server Pro1099 Login in Phase 1, step 2. Once you have those items in hand and the shared folder set up, you can proceed with the installation. Step 1: Beginning the installation If you downloaded the installer from the Internet, place it in a shared network folder and run it from the machine where you want the WebUpdate Workstation installed. If you have a CD-ROM, run the program from there. Enter your Registration Code and SQL Server instance name when prompted. When you get to the Multi-User Install Type step, select WebUpdate Workstation.
Page 6 MS SQL Server 1099 Pro Enterprise C/S Continue with the installation. If the installer detects a prior year installation of 1099 Pro, you will have the option of rolling forward* your Filer, Recipient, Security and Transmitter information. *Rolling forward is the process of copying prior year information to your new installation. Your prior year data is not changed in any way by this process. A roll forward can only be done if your new 2007 database is empty. If you have already entered information into it, the roll forward will not take place. Once you have specified all the common installation information, you will reach the Ready to Install summary step. Click next to proceed to Step 2. Step 2: Specifying your SQL Server connection information When you see the Connection Manager, click on the Database Connection button to set your information. o o o Most of the information will already be filled in for you based on what you previously entered during the install process. The primary thing that must be entered manually is the Login password that you chose in Phase 1 when you created the login. Click on the Test button to test the connection. If the test is successful, you will be able to SAVE the information and exit the connection setup form (don t forget to save!) If you cannot connect to the database, you will not be able to save or complete the installation. If you plan to install other workstation copies of 1099 Pro, you can optionally use the second menu option to create a SETUP.INI to help automate the process (highly recommended!) Just fill in the registration code, server name and WebUpdate Workstation prompts and then use the Save INI option to create the file. Step 3: Completing the installation and initial 1099 Pro setup Once you have completed Step 2 and tested your connection, the installer will copy the rest of the 1099 Pro files to the selected folder. You can optionally view the help file when the install is complete. Run 1099 Pro, and proceed through the Intro Wizard. If you rolled forward Filers from a prior year, you can optionally view them from the wizard. If you did not roll forward Filers, you will need to enter your first Filer in order to complete the wizard/setup. Select your choice to activate Audit Trails for your update forms (highly recommended.) Select your choice to activate the built-in Security or not and then finish the wizard. Once you have completed the Intro Wizard the program will start, you can select a Filer to use, and you are finished with the initial 1099 Pro WebUpdate Workstation setup. If you only intend for one person to use the program, they can use this version and you do not need to install any other copies of the software.
1099 Pro Enterprise C/S MS SQL Server Page 7 Phase 3 Installing all other 1099 Pro Workstations All other 1099 Pro workstations rely on your WebUpdate Workstation for updates and connection information. If you have not completed a WebUpdate installation, you cannot install other clients. Getting ready: What you need before starting the installs You can use the 1099 Pro CD-ROM to manually install workstations, but we recommend that you copy the ProAll_CS_07.EXE to a shared location on your network to simplify and speed the install process. If you created a SETUP.INI in Phase 2, be sure to copy it into the same folder. You can rename the 1099 ProAll_CS_07.EXE to something more meaningful if you like, but do not rename the SETUP.INI or it will not be found and used by the installer. If you did not create a SETUP.INI file during your WebUpdate Workstation install, you will need to manually enter or select the following items each time you install a new copy of 1099 Pro on a workstation. Your 1099 Pro Registration code. This is located on your invoice. The path to the shared network folder where the 1099 Pro WebUpdate Workstation was installed. Be sure that the workstation has access rights for this folder and below. NOTE: You can use a fully qualified UNC path or a mapped drive for this step. We recommend UNC to avoid problems associated with mapped drive letters changing, etc. The name of your SQL Server instance (not the physical server name, the SQL Server instance name.) Step 1: Install 1099 Pro on the workstation Access the network folder where you placed the ProAll_CS_07.EXE and SETUP.INI (if you created one), or install the program manually from the 1099 Pro product CD-ROM. Run the ProAll_CS_07.EXE to begin the install. o o If you have a SETUP.INI, you can just click through the install. Most prompts and options will be automatically filled in for you or not shown at all. If you do not have a SETUP.INI, you will need to manually enter and select the required information as listed above. When the installation is complete, proceed to the next step. Step 2: Test the installation Once you have completed the install, run 1099 Pro using either the new desktop icon or via the Windows Start menu. The program should connect to the database and present you with the Intro Wizard. If you see the wizard, are finished with the install. Note: If you are not the end-user for this install, we recommend that you cancel from the Intro Wizard and exit the program. When the actual end-user first uses the program, the Intro Wizard will explain some common concepts to help them get started with 1099 Pro.
