3 Highlights of the Year Exchange Visit to the Good Shepherd Sisters Services in Cebu, Philippines This year on August Sr. Juliana Accompanied 8 staff members on an exchange visit to Cebu, Philippines to see the various services for girls and women offered by the Good Shepherd Sisters. We were accommodated in the Cebu community and taken by van to visit the following preventive services: St. Mary Euphrasia Training Center for street girls between the ages of 6 and 18. The girls live in the Center but go out to school. Maria Droste Training Center, a service for college students who are in danger of being trafficked. Many of these girls have come to continue their studies after being in the training center for younger girls. For girls and women who are in need of rescue or rehabilitation services the sisters have: Mary Hills residence, a short term crisis center serving women who are single and pregnant and also some poor but deserving college students whom the sisters help to find scholarships. Welcome House, a drop-in Center for trafficked/prostituted women, located in the heart of Cebu City. Good Shepherd Recovery Center, a residence for prostituted women, who are in the recovery stage for reintegration with their families and community. This is located two cities away from Cebu City. Finally we were also taken to visit Alay Kapwa, areas of poor but empowered women, who are able to earn a livelihood with their income generating projects sponsored by the Good Shepherd Sisters. Throughout our visit we were impressed by the warm welcome we received and the friendliness and simple open heartedness of all the girls and young women. We were also inspired by the dedication of the Sisters who give so generously to the care and protection of their charges. We appreciate their commitment to seeing the girls through their studies even to college, knowing that without a college education they are very vulnerable to being caught up in prostitution or trafficking. 6 Highlights of the Year Staff Selected for Mentorship Program Two Good Shepherd staff, Aris Tam and Esther Un were selected to participate in the Global Freedom Exchange, a Hilton Worldwide and Vital Voices partnership leveraging leadership to end trafficking. The program involved visiting 3 US cities New York City, Washington, D.C. and Dallas, Texas, to learn from experts in the field, government and NGOs what is being done and what can be done to end human trafficking, with a particular focus on child sex trafficking. After their return Aris and Esther shared their experiences with our staff and also with staff of the Social Welfare Bureau and members of the Anti-Trafficking Committee. The women in the program came from the following countries: Ethiopia, India, Macau, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, United States. 7 Highlights of the Year Anti-Trafficking Activities February4,2013 Visit of the Anti-Trafficking Deterrent Measures Committee. We welcomed members of the Committee to see our Centre and the bedroom prepared for the under-age trafficking victims. We shared our experience of looking after these girls and discussed how we might engage them in being more cooperative with the police. Unfortunately most of the girls are not willing to disclose who brought them to Macau. June 3,2013 presentation on human trafficking to a group of 7 girls and 2 staff from Sr. Teresa To s hostel. June 16,2013 presentation on human trafficking to a group of 12 Burmese. October 28,2013 presentation on human trafficking upper form students in Fatima School November1,2013 Sr. Juliana Devoy gave a presentation on Macau s Human Trafficking Law to Ending Human Trafficking a regional conference organized by the Hong Kong Women Lawyers Association together with the Beijing Women Lawyers Association. November 25 December 10, 2013 Good Shepherd Centre had public screenings of the film, Nefarious Merchant of Souls to raise awareness about human trafficking. 8 Highlights of the Year Lobbying for the Criminalization of Domestic Violence During the year under review we continued to use all avenues of awareness raising to pressure the government to change its proposed domestic violence law. Panel Presentations On February 28, 2013, May 12, 2013 and August 10, 2013.Sr. Juliana participated in panel discussions on domestic violence sponsored by different organizations. Media support We gave many newspaper interviews and recruited several of our former residents who are domestic violence survivors to tell their stories to the reporters. Collaboration with Anti-Domestic Violence Coalition Good Shepherd Centre began to host meetings of a group of scholars, social workers and young people who became active in promoting domestic violence as a public crime. They collected signatures of support on facebook and also went to the street to gather signatures and explain to the public the reason why domestic violence should be criminalized. 10 Good Shepherd Centre During the year 2013 Good Shepherd Centre gave shelter to a total of 87 persons. At the beginning of the year there were 17 persons in residence. We admitted a total of 70 persons including 54 adults and 16 children. The reasons for admission were as follows: Reason Numbers Domestic violence 7 Unmarried mother 4 Under-age trafficking victims 29 Housing crisis 4 Emotional problem 2 Released from prison 2 In need of care & protection 2 Conflict with husband 1 Other 3 Total 54 **The 3 other cases included a woman who abandoned her baby, a woman who was recovering from a miscarriage and a woman with cancer who was living in a very unhealthy situation and needed to be near the hospital for chemo treatments.
