The Respect Life Prayer and Reflection Calendar is an opportunity to reflect, pray and become informed on various pro-life issues. We pray that you use this guide as a starting point to become actively engaged with pro-life programs and issues in your church parish and community. We must begin with a commitment never to intentionally kill or collude in the killing, of any innocent human life, no matter how broken, uniformed, disabled or desperate that life may seem. - Living the Gospel of Life, No. 21 In our present social context, marked by a dramatic struggle between the culture of life and the culture of death, there is a need to develop a deep critical sense, capable of discerning true values and authentic needs. 2 PRAYER FOR LIFE Father and maker of all, You adorn all creation with splendor and beauty, and fashion human lives in Your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of Your hands, and renew among Your people a readiness to nurture and sustain Your precious gift of life. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. 3 WHAT IS CAPITAL PUNISHMENT WHAT IS CAPITAL PUNISHMENT? Capital Punishment is a form of punishment in which the state kills individuals convicted of crime. IN THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY Since 1974, 34% of the Capital Punishment Cases (or Executions) in the United States were African Americans 42% of the current United States Death Row population are African Americans African-Americans constitute nearly 1M of the total 2.3M incarcerated African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of Whites WHAT IS ABORTION? ABORTION Abortion is the intentional removal and destruction of a developing child from the mother s womb. Abortion is the leading cause of death in the African-American Community since ,484 abortions are performed on African-Americans each day Nearly 4,000 children are aborted daily Over 15,000,000 African American babies were aborted over the past 30 years Abortion has taken 1/3 of our present population 37.1% of all abortions are performed on African-American woman who make up only 13.1%of the total population of women

4 PRAYER PRAYER FOR THE DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFE Lord and Giver of all life, Help us to value each person created in love by You. In Your mercy, guide and assist our efforts to promote the dignity of all human life, born and unborn. We ask this through Christ our Lord. PRO-LIFE MISSION & OBJECTIVES To promote a consistent ethic of life To witness to the sanctity and value of every human life To respect, protect, love, and serve life from conception to natural death To be actively involved in promoting and protecting a culture of life SUGGESTED ACTIONS Amen Participate and attend pro-life events and activities in your diocese, church parish and community. Visit a convalescent home or a family residents in a nursing home and adopt a grandparent. Assist an elderly or handicapped family member with chores. Encourage and support local programs that provide care for the dying, as well as reach out to members of your family church community who may be dying. Read the definition of euthanasia and find out which states in the US and which countries have legalized it. Provide support and words of comfort to family members of a dying parishioner or family member. Offer emotional and material support to the family members of prisoners, especially children, and to pregnant women and new mothers in prison. Work with a Victims of Violence Outreach Program in your community.

5 SUGGESTED ACTIONS cont. Work with outreach programs for Prison Ministry to ensure the spiritual needs of prisoners are met. Monitor social, legislative, and political trends to learn their implications for the pro-life efforts. Advocate and lobby for legislative reform to end the death penalty, abortion and to provide effective palliative care for those who are chronically ill or dying, etc. Advocate for legislative reform to protect the human dignity of all. Pray, Pray, Pray and encourage and coordinate programs of prayer and worship that focus on the sanctity of all human life.
