1 Professionals Australia PROFESSIONALS AUSTRALIA / AUSTRALIAN COMPUTER SOCIETY ICT REMUNERATION SURVEY SUMMARY REPORT 2015 PREPARED FOR MEMBERS WHAT S INSIDE: Salaries by Industry Levels of responsibility, and Job function
2 Professionals Australia / Australian Computer Society Remuneration Survey Summary Report Computer society renumeration survey summary report 2015 ICT salaries snapshot The 2015 Professionals Australia / Australian Computer Society Remuneration Survey Report shows that average salary growth was 2.9 per cent over the twelve months to June 2015 (see Graph 1). Graph 1 - Average Annual % Increase in ICT Professional Salaries, Average salary growth for ICT professionals outpaced the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a national measure of economic growth (see Graph 2). The report further showed that ICT professionals average salary growth was above the national average of 2.3 per cent based on the Australian Wage Price Index (WPI). ICT professionals employed in the private sector reported an average increase in salaries of 3.4 per cent, a rise from the 2.6 per cent increase reported a year earlier. Public sector employees reported salaries growing an average of 2.1 per cent, down slightly from the 2.3 per cent average growth reported in the 2013 survey. A gap in wage growth between the public and private sector appears to be widening. Education sector employees reported an average increase of 3.3 per cent, compared to average increases of 3.7 per cent reported in the previous survey. Graph 2 - Average % Increase in Salary by Sector Despite a general cooling of the Australian economy over the last 12 months, with increases in the CPI down on 12 months prior and movements in the WPI staying the same, ICT remains a thriving segment of the Australian economy. 4% 3% 3.4% 3.3% 3.4% 2.9% The average salary of ICT professionals continues to rise in real terms, growing faster than the cost of living; a trend likely to continue as Australia transitions away from the resources boom to a knowledge based economy and embraces its position as a leading provider of information technology services. 2% 1% Private sector 2.1% Public sector Education sector Other sectors All sectors 2.3% WPI (June '15) 1.5% CPI (June '15)
3 Salary increase by industry ICT respondents employed in the business services industry enjoyed the highest average annual salary increases at 6.41%. They were followed by education, at 4.64%, which we also found to have the greatest annual increase in last year s survey. The computer services industry had the lowest average increase in salaries at 1.44%. Graph 3 - Average Annual % Increase in ICT Professional Salaries, Salary increase by award level The Professional Employees Award 2010 defines five tiers of responsibility for professionals, where level 1 represents those early in their career. These levels roughly correspond to level 3 through 7 of the internationally recognised SFIA classification structure. Those above these classification structures typically comprise the upper management of an organisation. Graph 4 - Average Annual Salary Movements by Responsibility Level On average, salary increases were greatest for early career ICT professionals while typically quite low for those who sit above the Award. Employees defined as highly skilled also experienced strong average gains of 3.71% at level 4, and 3.36% at level 5.
4 Professionals Australia / Australian Computer Society Remuneration Survey Summary Report Salaries by job function Unsurprisingly, Chief Information Officer and General Management roles continue to be the most lucrative ICT positions with 50% of General Managers surveyed reporting Total Packages between $160,000 and $310,000 per year. Total package is defined as comprising the sum of the value of base salary, bonuses, superannuation and the value of fringe benefits such as motor vehicles. Table 1 - Total package by job function JOB FUNCTION TYPICAL TOTAL PACKAGE VALUE ($)* JOB FUNCTION TYPICAL TOTAL PACKAGE VALUE ($)* GENERAL MANAGER $160,000 - $310,500 CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER $158,775 - $257,325 ICT BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER $152,438 - $211,775 ICT ACCOUNT MANAGER $144,580 - $197,684 TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEER $120,450 - $197,083 ICT ARCHITECT $143,400 - $184,500 RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT $73,260 - $181,300 ICT PROJECT MANAGER $113,466 - $179,688 ICT SALES REPRESENTATIVE $109,500 - $179,325 ICT MANAGER $122,280 - $177,330 ICT CONSULTANT $97,665 - $168,975 COMPUTER NETWORK/ SYSTEMS ENGINEER $77,214 - $147,450 ACADEMIC $111,143 - $143,212 SOFTWARE ENGINEER $95,700 - $140,060 ICT BUSINESS ANALYST $91,633 - $130,741 SYSTEMS ANALYST $99,386 - $130,725 DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR $115, ,231 ICT SECURITY SPECIALIST $91,586 - $127,385 ANALYST PROGRAMMER $83,220 - $127,227 ICT SYSTEMS TEST ENGINEER $83,517 - $121,000 ICT QUALITY ASSURANCE ENGINEER $78,840 - $117,320 SOFTWARE & APPLICATIONS PROGRAMMER $70,887 - $113,950 DEVELOPER PROGRAMMER $65,700 - $113,880 TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORK ENGINEER $78,945 - $113,880 SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR $75,750 - $110,213 NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR $78,745 - $108,600 ICT SUPPORT ENGINEER $52,983 - $104,958 ICT CUSTOMER SUPPORT OFFICER $58,856 - $102,485 ICT SUPPORT/TEST ENGINEER $61,225 - $101,200 ICT SUPPORT TECHNICIAN $58,460 - $87,210 WEB DEVELOPER $42,487 - $71,510 OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS IN IT $100,120 - $168,502 *includes superannuation, bonuses and commissions, the value of a motor vehicle where supplied and other employer provided payments and benefits.
5 Future expectations Despite wage and salary growth in Australia remaining low over the last twelve months, ICT professionals have achieved respectable growth in wages. With the nation increasingly relying on its technology and service based industries for growth it is expected average growth in ICT salaries will continue to match or exceed increases across the broader workforce.
