2 Todd Williams Executive Director Commit! Highly committed to public education, Todd currently serves as the founding Chairman and Executive Director of The Commit! Partnership, a consortium of over 100 institutions (including ten school districts and seven higher ed institutions educating over 400,000 students) that is focused on meaningfully improving college and career readiness levels across Dallas County. He also serves as the Education Policy Advisor to Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings. Todd is the current board chair for Austin College, one of the region s leading liberal arts institutions located in Sherman, Texas. With his wife Abby, Todd also chairs the regional advisory board for Teach for America in Dallas/Ft. Worth and helped establish the Williams Preparatory School, a K-12 free tuition public charter school operated by Uplift Education that educates over 1,200 primarily low-income children in northwest Dallas. 100% of its graduates since its first senior class in 2011 have been accepted to a four-year college or university. Todd is the former Chair of the Citizen Budget Review Commission for Dallas ISD ($1.5 billion budget educating 157,000 students) and the former Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees for Uplift Education, a public charter school management organization with almost 10,000 students served in Dallas, Irving, Fort Worth and Arlington. He is also a founding board member and former chairman of the Real Estate Finance and Investment Center at the University of Texas and a former chairman of the Real Estate Council of Dallas, the city s largest real estate organization. Prior to dedicating his efforts full time as a volunteer to public education in Dallas, Todd served as both a partner and as global co-head of Goldman Sachs real estate private equity investment area, retiring in 2009 following a 20-year career with the firm in their New York, Los Angeles and Dallas offices. Total assets under management purchased by GS-managed real estate funds exceeded $100 billion in cost, including $10 billion of equity invested by Goldman Sachs and its managing partners. A Dallas ISD graduate from Bryan Adams High School, Todd earned an M.B.A. with distinction from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in 1989 and graduated with a B.A. in Economics from Austin College in Sherman, Texas in 1982.
3 Miguel Solis Term Expires 2017 District 8-Love Field, Northwest Dallas, and Central Dallas 1st Vice President Representing District 8, Miguel Solis became the youngest board member ever elected to the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees on November 5, 2013 through special election. Soon after, he was re-elected to serve a three year term. On June 26, 2014, Miguel was selected by his fellow Trustees as the Board President, making him the youngest ever to serve in the position. In 2015, he was elected by his colleagues to serve as 1st Vice President. Solis professional experiences include serving as a staff member on President Barack Obama s 2008 presidential campaign, an eighth grade U.S. history teacher, and a central staff member in Dallas ISD. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Dallas-based Latino Center for Leadership Development. Miguel has been appointed to the Citywide Poverty Task Force and Joint Committee on Education by Dallas Mayor Michael S. Rawlings and was recently chosen for the Aspen Institute s Rodel Fellowship as one of the nation s promising young political leaders. Miguel is a native Texan, raised by his mother, a school bookkeeper, and late father, a public school teacher and small business owner. He received his B.A. in history with a minor in political science from Lamar University and received his M. Ed. in education policy and management from Harvard University. 4 JOHN TURNER Partner PRACTICES: Litigation John Turner is a trial lawyer who represents plaintiffs and defendants in civil litigation DALLAS across the United States. His experience covers a broad spectrum of business and T commercial law, ranging from intellectual property cases to contract disputes to antitrust F matters to environmental proceedings. John is currently the Co-Chair of the firm s Trade Secrets Practice Group. EDUCATION AND John s approach to litigation is guided by a few key practices that are crucial to a CLERKSHIPS successful outcome in any lawsuit: effective communication with the client, thorough J.D., Yale Law School, 2000 investigation of the facts, and clear explanation of the law. In the past several years alone, A.B., Social Studies, Harvard John has led clients in significant trials in Texas and beyond. For example: University, 1997 In a trial held in two phases from 2012 to 2014, John represented a coalition of 88 Texas The Honorable Lee H. school districts in major litigation related to the adequacy of the school finance system in Rosenthal, U.S. District Court Texas. After trial, District Judge John Dietz ruled in favor of the school district coalitions, for the Southern District of finding that the system had evolved into an unconstitutional state property tax and that it Texas ( ) failed to provide school districts with funding sufficient to meet constitutional standards. John represented Halliburton in another trade secrets dispute tried before a Dallas County jury in 2012, involving a former employee and the competing oilfield tools company he founded. In a trial lasting almost two weeks, John convinced the twelve-person jury to return a unanimous verdict in favor of Halliburton on all counts. 5 JOHN TURNER Partner John most recently represented a coalition which included the City of Granbury and Hood County in opposing a major water permit application filed by the Brazos River Authority. The eight-day hearing before two administrative law judges took place in early 2015 and is currently awaiting decision. Public interest and governmental entity representation have played a large role in John s practice. In addition to the school funding matter mentioned above, John was part of a team that represented more than thirty Texas cities, including Dallas and Houston, challenging the proposed construction of a number of new coal-fired power plants across Texas in John grew up in Crockett, Texas. He graduated from Harvard College and obtained his law degree from Yale Law School, where he won the Thurman Arnold Prize as the best oral advocate in the school s moot court competition. Before joining Haynes and Boone in 2008, he was a partner in the firm of Susman Godfrey LLP, where he began his legal career. After law school, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Lee H. Rosenthal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. 6 Heather Bryant, M.Ed Director of Innovation and Impact Momentous Institute Heather Bryant is the Director of Innovation and Impact for Momentous Institute. She has worked in the education field for 27 years. Heather graduated from Texas A&M with a bachelor s degree in Elementary Education, and from the University of North Texas with a master s degree in Early Childhood Education. Alan Cohen Executive Director of Early Childhood Education & Community Partnerships DISD As Executive Director of Early Childhood Education & Community Partnerships for Dallas ISD, Alan is focused on providing children aged 0-5 years old the supports necessary to reach kindergarten developmentally on track for success. After some early success in the private sector, Alan dedicated his career to public education when he was awarded a fellowship by Education Pioneers to work with the Commit! Partnership, a regional collaborative dedicated to coordinating data-driven cooperation among the many educators, non-profits, foundations and community advocates working hard to support student achievement in Dallas County. In addition to his work with Dallas ISD, Alan chairs the nonprofit selection committee for Carry The Load, a national charity dedicated to honoring and supporting frontline military, law enforcement, firefighters, rescue personnel, and their families. Alan received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in 2010, and his BA in Sociology from Tulane University in 2005.
7 Jaime Hanks Meyers Director of Early Childhood Commit! Jaime Hanks Meyers is a Dallas native and has seen how quality education can change the trajectory of an individual s and community s success. Before joining Commit!, Jaime worked with CHILDREN AT RISK, a research and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the quality of children across the state of Texas. While at CHILDREN AT RISK, Jaime served in a variety of capacities including Director of Strategic Partnerships, Deputy Director, and Managing Director of North Texas. Jaime established the organization s North Texas office and grew its operations to a team of ten employees in two years. Under Jaime s leadership the North Texas team was able to increase participation in school breakfast programs across the state by more than 130,000 students, launch a new resource to empower parents to become the best advocates for their child s education, and strengthen laws to better meet the needs of children. Previously, Jaime also worked at College Forward as an AmeriCorps VISTA, St. Edward s University and United Ways of Texas. She received her Bachelor s in International Relations from St. Edward s University in Austin, Texas. Ben Mackey Principal Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center Ben Mackey was born and raised in Orlando, Florida and earned his bachelor s degrees in finance and history from the University of Florida. Ben realized his passion for education before graduation and sought alternative teaching certification through Teach for America and began teaching mathematics at West Bolivar High School in Rosedale, MS. During his tenure at West Bolivar as the lead math teacher and math department chair, Ben founded the first successful AP Calculus program in district history and the students shattered district Algebra I state test records. He earned the distinction of West Bolivar High School Teacher of the Year for the school year and was recognized as a regional winner and national nominee for the Sue Lehmann Excellence in Teaching Award. After witnessing firsthand how much of an impact school leadership has on the success of a school, Ben moved to Boston to pursue his master s degree in school leadership from Harvard University. Upon graduating with his Ed.M in May, Ben spent the summer as a School Director for the district summer school program in Rosedale, MS before moving to Dallas to begin serving as the principal of the TAG Magnet high school at Townview.
8 Meredyth Hudson Executive Director, Human Capital Management DISD Meredyth began her career in education as a Special Education teacher in a small community outside New Orleans, LA. Her nearly 20 years working in education reform have been driven by the belief that the teacher is the single most important factor in improving outcomes for students. Meredyth has recruited and selected teachers for high needs areas, developed teacher preparation programs, assisted both public school districts and universities with the development of high quality alternative certification programs, and has been involved with the design of teacher evaluation systems at the national level. Meredyth is an Executive Director for Dallas ISD, where she oversees the Alternative Certification program, Teacher Evaluation program and Special Systems. Meredyth holds a BA in Political Economy from Tulane University and an MBA from Louisiana State University. She is also a graduate of the Leadership ISD Fellowship Program. Gretchen May Commit! Partnership Gretchen May leads the work of the Commit Partnership relating to educator pipelines, with the goal of substantially growing the number of highly prepared, highly effective educators serving Dallas County schools. The mission of the Commit! Partnership broadly is to support the success of every Dallas County child from cradle to career by leveraging the power of data, community expertise and collective action, partnering with 14 local districts representing 81% of all Dallas County students in K-12 education. Prior to her work with Commit, Gretchen worked as a management consultant and a teacher.
