Purpose Statement for the Program (This can be found on CHIEF) Automotive Technology is an instructional program that prepares individuals to service and maintain all types of automobiles. Instruction includes the diagnosis of malfunctions in and repair of engines, fuel, electrical, cooling, brake systems and drive train and suspension systems. Instruction is also provided in the adjustment and repair of individual components such as transmissions and fuel injection systems. Upon completion of the two-year curriculum, the student will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree in Automotive Technology. 5. How does the purpose of the program support the overall mission/purpose of the College as adopted by the Board of Trustees? (Mention College goals that show a linkage to your program. The purpose of the Automotive Technology program supports the following institutional goals for ICC: Instructional services, Technology, Growth, and Service. We also are required, for NATEF certification, to complete 20 hours of update training per year. 17. Do instructors in this program devote adequate time to preparation for the courses they teach? 18. Describe the nature of interaction between program faculty and the advisory committee (Give example(s) of advisory input or changes that resulted from the advisory relationship in the last five years.): The advisory committee is active in reviewing the curriculum, facilities and equipment and making recommendations for any changes that need to be made to line up with the industry. 20. Is there evidence that competencies being taught in this program are the competencies needed to perform in the workforce or at a higher level of education? If yes, how are the competencies determined? The Automotive Technology program teaches the required state curriculum and also uses NATEF standards for the competencies that are taught. 21. (Strengths are documented with data such as information on number of customers served, program/unit s performance, staff credentials or other factors that contribute to the success of the unit.) The instructors have a combined total of 40 years experience in the field and are both Master ASE certified and former Ford Senior Master certified. We serve 24 new students per year. We had 100% pass rate on the CPAS in We had the highest average scores on the CPAS in We had 100% placement of the graduates in 2008, 2009 and What are the weaknesses of the program? (Any problems that the program/unit may have encountered in the past are appropriate for this section.) The facilities are not large enough to accommodate the students. 6 28. What opportunities are available for the program/unit? (Any opportunities for improving the program should be included in this section.) We are currently increasing the amount of lab work space that students have to perform in the shop. This will give the students more "hands-on" practice time. We also have required minimum ACT scores in reading and English to improve the students success in the Automotive program. 29. What are the threats or difficulties that the program/unit must overcome in the next five years? What is your plan for addressing these threats or difficulties? (If there are changes in the near future that are foreseen as negatively affecting this unit/program, these should be mentioned.) Since we have doubled our enrollment, we will have to be more diligent in visiting the local businesses and finding employment opportunities for graduates. We will be visiting any businesses that are related with the automotive field in the five county district that we serve in an effort to get these businesses to call us when they have any job openings. We are applying for NATEF certification. We are planning to start providing hands-on training on hybrid vehicles. We are looking in to teaming up with Snapon Tools to provide training to our students and local industry professional development on Snap-on equipment.
