10 1.8 Brief History of Mazda Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd is founded in Hiroshima, Japan. Three-wheel truck production starts. Introduces first small 4-wheeled truck, Mazda CA. Introduces R360 Coupe, first Mazda 2-door passenger car. Full-scale export to the European market starts. Introduces Mazda Cosmo Sports (110S), Mazda's first rotary engine vehicle. Exports to the U.S. begins. Ford acquires a 25% equity stake in Mazda. Company is renamed as Mazda Motor Corporation. Mazda 787B wins the Le Mans 24-Hour Endurance Race claiming the first victory for a Japanese automobile and the rotary engine. Mazda and Ford enter into a closer tie-up by increasing Ford s equity share from 25% to 33.4%. The 700,000th Mazda Roadster (MX-5) earned a Guinness World Record as the sports car with the highest number of units produced in its class. 3 rd generation Mazda2 wins 2008 World Car of the Year Award. 20 3.2 Plant Objectives The Mexico PRODUCTION FACILITY will be established as a compact vehicle manufacturing hub mainly for Central and South America, and will include both VEHICLE and ENGINE assembly plants. 20
