3 The Japanese Auto Industry in Canada In 2014, the Japanese auto industry in Canada reached new pinnacles of performance with record levels in sales, production and vehicle. Production and exports of Japanese brand light vehicles rebounded in 2014 with over 972,000 units built and exports of 766,000 vehicles to the US and other global markets. Light vehicle sales volume grew to a record 625,559 units; but with increased competition in Canada, our market share has not yet fully recovered from the last peak in Since the first Japanese automakers came to Canada in 1965, billions of dollars invested by JAMA Canada members and their 1,200 dealers across Canada in vehicle and parts distribution, sales, and service are the foundation for our successful integration into the Canadian economy and in countless communities in all provinces and the Yukon Territories. Japanese automakers continue to focus on supplying Canadian consumers with safe, reliable, environmentally-friendly personal transportation. Among other things, our presence in Canada has raised competition across the industry and increased benefits for consumers with vehicles that offer safety, fuel-efficiency and innovative advanced technologies including continuously variable transmissions, lean-burn direct fuel injection, turbo-chargers, gas electric and plug-in hybrids, as well as battery electric vehicles to name a few.

4 2014 SALES up 7.1% to 625,559 cars and light trucks (33.8% market share) 3 out of every 4 Japanese brand vehicles sold in Canada are currently built in North America; about 45% of those NA built vehicles are made in Canada PRODUCTION record output at 972,418 light vehicles, up 6.4% over 2013 (representing 40.8% share of total Canadian light vehicle production). With the benefit of NAFTA, about 78.8% of total light vehicle production was exported in 2014, primarily to the US EXPORTS 766,073 light vehicles shipped to the US and several other countries. Canada has been a net vehicle exporter since 1993 over 3.6 million more vehicles exported from Canada than combined imports from Japan, US, Mexico and other countries IMPORTS 124,484 units from Japan (down 25.6%); 254,660 units from US, Mexico & other countries (up 44.5%). Canada manufactured and exported over 6 times the number of light vehicles imported from Japan in EMPLOYMENT (direct & indirect) currently stands at 72,600 across Canada: 40,000 at 1,200 dealerships in all provinces & the Yukon, 2,080 at head & regional offices, 12,310 in vehicle manufacturing 18,210 at over 50 auto parts related plants. Thousands ,073 Exports from Canada 124,484 Imports from Japan RECENT NEW DEVELOPMENTS Toyota will invest $421 million to launch the next generation of Lexus RX 350 and 450h at their plant in Cambridge, Ontario. Honda announced $857 million investment in its 3 manufacturing plants in Alliston, Ontario. HCM will be the global lead plant for the next generation of Honda Civic, and is also planning to export CR-V sport utility vehicles to Europe in the near future. Overall employment in the Japanese auto parts sector in Canada increased by 680 in the past year to just over 18,000 currently: Howa Canada Manufacturing will open a new plant in Alliston to provide interior roof liners for the Honda Civic and will employ about 42 associates at start-up in September, Toyota Boshoku Canada s seat and door trim components plant in Elmira will expand in September 2015 adding over 100 new team members to their operation. Mitsui High-tec, Inc. will establish their first Canadian plant in Brantford to develop precise motor core tooling for the automotive industry. Start-up is expected in 2016.
