It also reports the complete structural stablty test results (Table A1) dscussed n footnote 9 of the paper, as well as the predctve regresson results for SENT (Table A2) and condtonal asset prcng model estmaton results (Table A3) dscussed n Secton 2.4 of the paper. We begn wth the wld bootstrap procedure. Let ˆε t+1 = r t+1 ( ˆα + N =1 ˆβ,x x,t + N =1 ˆβ,S S,t ), (A1) where ˆα, ˆβ,x ( = 1,..., N), and ˆβ,S ( = 1,..., N) are OLS parameter estmates for the general multple predctve regresson model that ncludes a constant and all of the N macroeconomc varables and N techncal ndcators as regressors. Followng conventon, we assume that each macroeconomc varable follows an AR(1) process: x,t+1 = ρ,0 + ρ,1 x,t + v,t+1 for = 1,..., N. (A2) Defne ˆv c,t+1 = x,t+1 ( ˆρ c,0 + ˆρc,1 x,t) for = 1,..., N, (A3) where ˆρ,0 c and ˆρc,1 are reduced-bas estmates of the AR(1) parameters n (A2). The reduced-bas estmates of the AR parameters are computed by teratng on the analytcal second-order bas expresson for the OLS estmates. Based on these AR parameter estmates and ftted resduals, we buld up a pseudo sample of observatons for the equty rsk premum and N macroeconomc varables under the null hypothess of no

2 return predctablty: r t+1 = r + ˆε t+1 w t+1 for t = 0,...,T 1, (A4) x,t+1 = ˆρ c,0 + ˆρc,1 x,t + ˆvc,t+1 w t+1 for = 1,..., N and t = 0,...,T 1, (A5) where r s the sample mean of the equty rsk premum, w t+1 s a draw from the standard normal dstrbuton, and x,0 = x,0 ( = 1,..., N). Observe that we multply ˆε t+1 n (A4) and each ˆv,t+1 c n (A5) by the same scalar, w t+1, when generatng the month-(t + 1) pseudo resduals, thereby makng t a wld bootstrap. In addton to preservng the contemporaneous correlatons n the data, the wld bootstrap accounts for general forms of condtonal heteroskedastcty. Employng reduced-bas parameter estmates n (A5) helps to ensure that we adequately capture the persstence n the macroeconomc varables. To generate a pseudo sample of observatons for the N techncal ndcators, we assume that each ndcator follows a frst-order, two-state, Markov-swtchng process wth the followng transton matrx: where P = p 0,0 p 1,0 p 0,1 p 1,1 for = 1,..., N, (A6) p j,k = Pr(S,t = k S,t 1 = j) for j, k = 0, 1, (A7) and p 0,0 + p 0,1 = p 1,0 + p 1,1 = 1. Based on estmates of the transton probabltes n (A6) and S,0 ( = 1,..., N), we can buld up a pseudo sample of observatons for the N techncal ndcators va smulatons. Usng the pseudo sample of observatons for the equty rsk premum [{rt+1 }T 1 t=0 ], N macroeconomc varables [{x,t }T 1 t=0 ( = 1,..., N)], and N techncal ndcators [{S,t }T 1 t=0 ( = 1,..., N)], we estmate the slope coeffcents and correspondng heteroskedastcty-robust t-statstcs for the bvarate predctve regressons gven by (1) and (10) n the paper for each, as well as the prncpal component predctve regressons gven by (11), (12), and (13) n the paper. Note that we compute the prncpal components n (11), (12), and (13) usng {x,t }T 1 t=0 and {S,t }T 1 t=0 ( = 1,..., N), so that the pseudo sample accounts for the estmated regressors n the prncpal component predctve regressons. We store the t-statstcs for all of the predctve regressons. Repeatng ths process 2,000 tmes yelds emprcal dstrbutons for each of the t-statstcs. For a gven t-statstc, the emprcal p-value s the proporton of the bootstrapped t-statstcs greater than the t-statstc for the orgnal sample. 2
