1 BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE IN THEOLOGY Admission Requirements: a. Five credit passes including English language in the West African School Certificate, five credit passes in G.C. E. O/level Senior Secondary School Certificate, NECO or other equivalents at not more than two sittings for a four-year degree programme. 1 b. OND or NCE in any course of study from a recognized institution with 5 credits at O/Level including English language for a four-year degree programme. c. Diploma in Theology of the Zoa International Bible Institute or from any other Bible College recognized by the authority of the ZIBI least five credits at O/Level including English language for a four-year degree programme. d. HND/Bachelor s degree in any course of study from higher institutions recognized by the authority of ZIBI for a four-year degree programme. COURSE DURATION The course will normally run for 8 semesters for a year degree programme. Each semester will normally comprise 15 weeks of lectures and 2 weeks of examinations. PRACTICAL ATTACHMENT There will be one practical attachment period of a semester at the end of the second semester of 300 level courses. MODE OF INSTRUCTION: The Institute operates a course system of instruction each course shall carry one or more credit hours. One credit hour course is a course that meets for one hour of lecture/tutorial per week for 15 weeks. Every course in each department shall have a code number. The code numbers are determined by the year of study (First year 100 level, second year = 200 level, third year= 300 level and fourth year = 400 level, the semester in which the course is taken and the serial number of such a course on the department. For

2 example, in the Department of General Studies English Language 1 is the number one course on the list. This Course also comes up in the first of the eight Semesters; hence we code it thus; English language 1 GES 111- means: It is a general studies course, it is 100 level course, it is a first semester course and it is course number 1 Hence: the first digit refers to the level, the second digit refers to the semester while the last digit refers to the course number. This applies to all courses on all levels and programmes. GRADING SYSTEM: The Institute operates the following systems Score Letter Grade Point 80% and above A % B % C % D % E % F 0 Grades A to E are pass grades while grade F is a fail grade. CLASSIFICATION OF DEGREES The Degree is classified according to the Cumulative grade point Average as follows: C.G.P.A st Class nd Class upper Division nd Class Lower Division rd Class Pass To obtain a degree, a student must pass the entire compulsory and required courses. Theology Proper: 3 Units Compulsory The nature, source, scope and function of Christian theology; the theoretical framework for doing theology is illustrated with themes from systematic theology in this course. 11

12 Pastoral Theology I: 3 Units Compulsory Introduction to the art and science of pastoral ministry with particular emphasis on ministerial ethics in full gospel church and the prayer life of a minister Pastoral Theology II: 2 Units Required Leadership that touches both gender; the importance of women in Christian leadership; authority and submission in pastoral ministry; vision and mandate, communication, Christian character and anointing Christology: 2 Units Required Studies in the person, life and ministry of Jesus Christ as the Second Person of the God-head. Pneumatology: 2 Units Required Studies in the person, life and ministry of Holy Spirit as the Third Person of the God-head. Demonology: 1 Unit Elective Studies in the person of the devil as a fallen archangel and of demons as fallen angels with the devil as agents of destruction; methods and avenues of demons possession and how to minister deliverance to victims of demon-possession Hermeneutics: 2 Units Required The principles of biblical interpretation; practice in developing skills and grasping the author s intended meaning of books of the Bible. The question of how we know that these meanings are God s words is also addressed. Eschatology: 2 Units Required The doctrine of last days events, death and resurrection, the final judgment, heaven and hell Soteriology: 2 Units Required Theories of atonement and the accomplishment of salvation in the event of Christ: faith, repentance regeneration, reconciliation, justification, adoption and sanctification. 12

The Church as the Kingdom of God on earth and its mandate Angelology: 1 Unit Elective Introduction to the studies of angels as ministers of God and the nature of angels; functions and relevance of their ministries Typology: 2 Units Required Study of types in the Old Testament; Progressive unfolding of God s plan of salvation in shadows and their realities Harmatiology: 1 Unit Elective Studies on the doctrine of sin: the primordial and actual sins. Man s creation and fall. The objectives are to encourage students to cease dwelling on past mistakes and to understand that failure is not final but genuine repentance is required of man. Studies in Daniel: 1 Unit Elective The study of last day s events from the perspective of prophets Daniel Christian Apologetics: 2 Units Required This course explains the nature of the biblical faith-principle by which our experience is to be interpreted as a whole. It exposes students to foundational issues in the study of apologetics and helps students to apply apologetic methodology to contemporary challenges. It answers such question as, from where is this faith-principle derived? Etc. Biblical Theology: 2 Units Required This course exposes students to Biblical Theological frame work for talking about what the Church believes and practices. It develops students in the study of the Bible from perspective of understanding the progressive history of God revealing himself to humanity following the fall and throughout the Old and New Testaments. Introduction to African Christian Theology: 1 Unit Elective 13

14 This course exposes students to variety of Christian theological perspective in Africa, concentrating on the themes of creative, salvation, liberation and eschatology as found in African Theological writings. 3. DEPARTMENT OF BIBLICAL STUDIES Bible Introduction: 2 Units Required History and authorship of the bible; hints on how best to study the bible and bible study methods. Bible Survey I (O.T.): 2 Units Required Old Testament Survey: general overview of the Old Testament literature with the purpose of knowing the background of the author, the central message, probable dates of writing, the purpose and historical perspective of the writing. Bible Survey II (N.T.): 2 Units Required New Testament Survey: general overview of the literature of the New Testament with particular reference to the beginning of the New Testament, documentation, scope, canonicity and authorship. The purpose, audience and central ideas in each of the New Testament books are viewed. Biblical Hebrew Language: 1 Unit Elective The grammar of Hebrew language with a particular reference to the New Testament Prophetical Books: 1 Unit Elective Introduction to the prophets in the Old Testament; the relevance of prophetic office to the people in the Old Testament era and its relevance to the New Testament Studies in the Epistles: 2 Units Required The theological, exegetical and textual criticism of the epistles: Romans, Ephesians, or the Pastor s Letters or Hebrews; their origins, literature and theology; relating to the study of life of the church in Africa. 14 Critical Introduction to the Old Testament: 2 Units Required The Bible as a unique document; the nature of the Old Testament history and the critical problems unsolved in the study of the Old Testament and

15 some of the proposed solutions; the types of literature contained in the Old Testament. Critical Introduction to the New Testament: 2 Units Required The theological questions and the types of literature contained in the New Testament towards a critical and deeper theological insight into the New Testament. Hebrew Syntax and Exegesis: 2 Units Elective Introduction to the study of Hebrew grammar and the translation and exegeseis of selected texts in the Old Testament. The Synoptic Gospels: 2 Units Required The birth of the synoptic gospels, the nature of the synoptic problem and the current proposed solution. 4. DEPARTMENT OF CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Christian Education: 3 Units Compulsory Introduction to agencies of Christian Education; Critical treatment of Sunday school organization and management; Ministerial training programme within the context of contemporary church leadership Counseling I: 3 Units Compulsory The general principles of counseling within the framework of the church. Counseling II: 2 Units Required Marriage and family counseling from the point of view of Christian marriage; how to choose within the will of God, Christian courtship, preparation for Christian home, marital situations and how Christians should adjust to them Homiletics I: 3 Units Compulsory Introduction to the art and science of the preparation, presentation and preservation of Bible messages Homiletics II: 2 Units Required Modern techniques of Christian communication studies of current theories in oral communication as it affects sermon delivery; Major elements of the systems of communication with emphasis on specific peculiarities in agents, forms and channels/media; Verbal, non-verbal, direct and indirect 15

16 forms as well as media, mode and channels such as prophetic utterances, words of knowledge, words of wisdom will be examined in this course. Psychology of Adult Education: 2 Units Required This course examines psychological elements in the teaching-learning processes in adult education and its local assembly of the Christian Church. Sociology of Christian Religious Education: 2 Units Required The sociology of education as it affects Christian and the Christian community is examined in this course. Practical Attachment: 12 Units Compulsory The practical application of the art and science of pastoral ministry on the field, involving pioneering a branch of a local assembly of the Christian church Project Writing: 6 Units Compulsory Empirical and non-empirical Religious Research Methods with focus on documentation of information collected. A Problem-solving project with clear-cut recommendations that could help solve existing problem of the Church at large. 5. DEPARTMENT OF MISSIONS Biblical Theology of Missions: 2 Units Required This course exposes students to Biblical basis for world Missions. It reviews perspective in both Old and New Testaments of the mission of the people of God in the Word. Evangelism: 3 Units Compulsory This course exposes students to the importance of the Great Commission and principles of soul-wining with particular reference to discipleship programme. I emphasize effective individual and corporate communication of the Good news. Child and Youth Evangelism: 2 Units Required This course introduces students to the principles of Child and youth Evangelism. Also, it exposes students to method of catching the interest of 16

17 the children and youth for their Salvation and integration into the church system. Cross-Cultural Anthropology and Social Reformation: 2 Units Required This course introduces students to cross-cultural missions with particular emphasis on the disciplining and the use of natives in missions. It also examines the relevance of religious and social institutions in contemporary society viz-a-viz missions Rural Missions and Urban Missions: 2 Units Required This course exposes students to the principles of reaching rural, nonliterate people and the cities with the gospel of Jesus Christ in various cultural settings International Missions: 2 Units Required This course introduces students to the principles of reaching the elites and highly educated and well-placed personalities with the gospel of Jesus Christ in various strata in the world at large. Pseudo-Christian and Comparative Religions: 2 Units Required This course introduces students to the principles of studying and appreciating other religions objectively with a view to looking for areas of agreement and danger. Church Mission Rel. & Management: 1 Unit Elective This course introduces students to the relevance of mission and successful management of mission. Mission Hist. & Trends: 1 Unit Elective This course exposes students to the history of mission and the styles or trends of mission. Language Acquisition Techniques: 1 Unit Elective This course exposes students to techniques needed to acquire and invest in various native languages to enhance their performance on mission fields. Understanding Islam as a Religious Faith: 1 Unit Required This course provides guidelines and insight to students who wish to make Christ known in the Muslim world so that they might understand the context in which to operate. It attempts to challenge students to play their 17

18 part in the evangelization of Muslims and to do so in an attitude of love and patience. 6. DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY Introduction to Philosophy of Religion: 2 Units Required This course introduces the students to the task of Philosophy of Religion, the legacy of Greece in Philosophy of Religion; the main objections raised against religion, including empiricism. The Beginning of Christian Philosophy: 2 Units Required This course explores the early Christian Philosophers. What prompted them into Christian speculations; their passions and motives. Also this course affirms that there is recognizably Christian from of philosophy and introduces students to the methods which the pioneers of Christian Philosophy adopted in facing up to the problem which confronted them. Studies in Theodicy: 2 Units Required This course exposes the students to the various definitions of evil as well as the problems evil in relation to the goodness and righteousness of God. Also, it examines various types of theodicy, and how both the theists and atheists can approach the problems of evil objectively. Introduction to Religious Ethics: 2 Units Required This course introduces students to the definition and contents of religious ethics, agencies and methods of articulating religious ethics and religious ethics in contemporary society. Christian Ethics in Contemporary Society: 2 Units Required This course examines Christian Ethics against the background of secular theories of morality, issues relating Christian Ethics to contemporary society such as selfhood and community, sex, family, divorce, racism, ethnicity, the rich and the poor and Christian attitudes to war, violence and authority. 7. DEPARTMENT OF CHURCH MINISTRIES Vision and Mandate. 2 Units Compulsory 18

19 Introduction to the Ministry, the mission statement, beliefs, core values, structure, etc Bible Worldview: 2 Units Compulsory It exposes different attitudes of the Christian to the word of God. It s an indepth exposition of the Parable of the Sower The Christian Hegemony: 1 Unit Elective Taking control over your sphere: spiritually, politically, economically, etc by the power of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual Formation: 2 Units Compulsory The act of intercession viz-a-viz the word of God coupled with the ability to wait on the Lord for definite instructions. Power Ministry: 2 Units Compulsory It introduces students to ministering the word of God with the demonstration of the power of the Holy Spirit. 19
