5 No matter which campus you attend, you ll be somewhere with a distinct character all its own. North Campus Humber s largest campus, located on the banks of the Humber River at Finch Avenue and Highway 27, is just a public transit ride away from Toronto s bustling downtown. Energetic and dynamic, the North Campus hosts diverse events such as lectures from visiting scholars, varsity athletic events and cultural celebrations. It s home to many of Humber s Centres of Excellence including the Design Centre, where our design programs are based; the Centre for Urban Ecology, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold-certified building; and the Canadian Centre of Culinary Arts and Science, the only facility in Canada to offer the Master Chef designation. Whether you re dining in the Humber Room, our student-run gourmet restaurant, or exploring our tranquil arboretum, Humber s North Campus has just the right balance of exceptional academics, vibrant cultural expression and peaceful serenity. Lakeshore Campus Located in Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario, Humber s Lakeshore Campus is where modern conveniences meet historic grandeur. Centred on an academic village of nine restored heritage buildings, the Lakeshore Campus is also home to Humber s newest building the gleaming, airy Lakeshore Commons, a hub for student activity and many of our programs. The Lakeshore Campus also incorporates Humber s theatre programs, with a fully equipped black box theatre, and the Fashion Institute, a dedicated facility that houses Humber s fashion programs. From a simulated crime scene studio in our Centre for Justice Leadership to one of the best recording facilities in the country, the Lakeshore Campus is home to an incredible variety of opportunities to put your learning into practice. Orangeville Campus Located 45 minutes north of Toronto, Humber s Orangeville Campus is where everyone knows your name. Home to Police Foundations, Early Childhood Education, Fitness and Health Promotion and Social Service Worker programs, the Orangeville Campus is a key part of the local community and Dufferin County. Orangeville s small class size and dedicated professors means you don t have to go far to get far. 6 7

Since 2005, the award has gone to a Humber student six times. It s a huge honour to be the recipient of this award, says James, who has played with his group, Autobahn, at music festivals around the world. I felt such a strong wave of energy and elation, not to mention encouragement, when I found out that I d won it s reassurance that I m doing something right and moving forward as a musician. Doing something right might just be the understatement of the year. In terms of musical maturity, he is way beyond his calendar years, Humber Director of Music Denny Christianson wrote in his letter nominating James for the 2013 award. James has the potential to become a Canadian jazz icon, for he already has a highly individual voice and all the necessary foundational knowledge and technique he needs. The 22-year-old says Humber was the only school he considered. I was attracted to Humber because of the incredible faculty, the school s reputation and the great energy in the city, James explains. I also wanted to study with Brian Dickinson, which I got to do last year. I knew his playing well and admired it. Both the curriculum and the environment at Humber have helped me grow as an artist. 14 My experience at Humber prepared me in many ways for my life now. The best part is seeing my kids make achievements that people never thought possible. nikki Developmental Services Worker School of Social & Community Services 24 Cory Farrow and Nathan Gabbidon s class project to design a new garden for Humber is going to have life beyond blueprints, because the pair s design was selected to be built at Humber s North Campus. We see this as giving back to Humber, says Cory, who graduated after winning the design contest and is now working with Shute Landscapes as a junior designer and lead hand. It s amazing to have an opportunity to create something that everyone will see we re both proud to be leaving our footprint at the school. For Nathan, who is now working full time with Salivan Landscape, Humber s Landscape Technician program offered a perfect combination of skills to see his ideas come to life. I ve always liked to build and create, he explains. This program teaches you a balance of construction skills, horticultural knowledge and landscape design techniques we re always building, designing or planting something. All those skills work together to give you a really comprehensive understanding of the industry. NATHAN AND CORY Landscape Technician School of Applied Technology At 7:45 on weekday mornings, Nikki Cochrane wakes her kids up and helps get them ready for the day. They get dressed, wash up and eat breakfast. At the end of the day, they eat dinner, pray together and bundle back into bed. It s a day that wouldn t seem out of place with any number of families across the globe. Nikki s family, though, isn t quite what you d expect. Nikki, who graduated from Humber s Developmental Services Worker program in 2013, works with Sarah s Covenant Homes in India, which provides familystyle foster care and therapy, education and support for 109 abandoned or orphaned children with special needs. She currently lives in Hyderabad with seven children who have a variety of physical and intellectual challenges, including visual impairment, cerebral palsy and epilepsy. She helps them with physical and occupational therapy as well as schooling, and works with local volunteers and specialists, ensuring that each child has the love and attention they need to thrive. My experience at Humber prepared me in many ways for my life now, like the hands-on tools I now use to educate my kids, Nikki says. The best part is seeing my kids make achievements that people never thought possible two have learned to walk, four have learned to feed themselves, one can sit independently and use an ipad to express her needs, and one little boy can now communicate using sign language. The uncertainty about their futures is challenging, but their progress is inspiring. 25
