We have been involved in major investment, project development and environmental, environmental impact, and local corridor/ subarea studies. The goal of these efforts, in which we take a holistic approach, is to identify improvements that increase overall mobility and the quality of life for residents. Transportation Planning and Environmental Services From policy studies to long-range transportation plans to freight planning, we consider how various transportation modes interact, how technology can provide better traveler information, and how non-motorized modes, such as bicycling and walking, can be more convenient and safe. We strive to incorporate smart growth strategies so our clients investments can be enjoyed for years to come. Our firm is a leader and innovator in providing compliance and documentation services in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of We continually refine and expand our capabilities to meet the emerging environmental planning and impact assessment needs of our clients, such as the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Railroad Administration. Highway and Bridge Engineering Our firm has completed location studies and preliminary design of more than 1,500 miles of multi-lane and splitlevel roadways. Final engineering designs have included interchanges ranging from the simple diamond type in rural areas to complex, multilevel connections in urban areas. We are also experienced in the design of two-lane arterials, realignments, bridge approaches, and service to access roads, as well as have expertise in localized streetscape, traffic calming, and context-sensitive solution design. Gannett Fleming also has been involved in every aspect of bridge engineering and design, including complex highway bridges, rail and transit structures, and inspection and rating of all structure types. We serve municipal, state, and federal clients in settings, from rural to inner city, small streams to major river crossings, and simple grade separations to complex multilevel interchanges.
Geotechnical Engineering Most engineering projects are affected in some way by geotechnical factors, such as topography, soils, geology, or groundwater. Our geotechnical engineering staff possesses a wide range of experience and has been involved with projects across the U.S., working in nearly every geologic setting. Also, many of our larger, more complex projects require working with difficult subsurface conditions. Gannett Fleming provides solutions for foundation design and rehabilitation, underground construction, earth structures, and groundwater resources. Through our diverse project assignments, we have gained a significant breadth of experience in conventional and innovative solutions. Traffic Engineering Gannett Fleming is a national leader in traffic engineering services. Our team brings knowledge of the most current and upto-date policies, procedures, and software applications in the traffic engineering field. Services include data collection, travel forecasting, traffic impact studies, traffic signal system design, signing and pavement marking plans, and maintenance/protection of traffic plans. Gannett Fleming is experienced in the use of numerous analysis tools, including 3-D traffic modeling. We have conducted studies for major roadway corridors and networks in an effort to reduce travel delay and emissions using low-cost retiming and new technologies. Our team is highly skilled in conducting road safety audits in which various components of the roadway are reviewed for safety and operational problems, such as signing/marking, roadside fixed-object hazards, drainage, and pedestrian safety. To meet federally mandated sign retroreflectivity requirements, Gannett Fleming has conducted sign inventory studies for agencies to assist in the development of a sign management system. A field application with an extensive sign attribute database was developed for the efficient collection and management of data. The data will support a GPS/GIS-based sign inventory management program. Transportation Operations and ITS Gannett Fleming has been at the forefront of linking planning with operations to promote safer and more-efficient transportation systems for all modes. Operations represents technologies and institutional arrangements that allow transportation systems to operate closer to their maximum design intent. Our comprehensive approach to operations and ITS planning ensures that deployments meet the needs of a region. Proper planning reduces risk and project costs by identifying key issues early in the project development process. We provide a wide range of transportation operations services, from developing the initial concepts to planning, design, systems integration, construction, construction management, and operations and maintenance support.
Photo courtesy of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, District 8 Incident Response Team Our highway and bridge projects have been recognized time and again with both regional and national awards. IM/EM We also are a leader in IM/EM planning and coordination, including development of incident and emergency plans, standard operating procedures, training programs, and IM/EM tools and resources. GIS In today s ever-changing world, the focus of transportation agencies has evolved. Improving mobility and safety, reducing fuel consumption and emissions, managing incidents, and providing effective traveler information are prime concerns. Operations makes this possible. Our comprehensive capabilities encompass ITS, freeway and arterial management, performance measurement, traffic signal systems, traffic management center support, freight operations, tolling and pricing systems, road weather management, and public transportation systems. Furthermore, our team s software experience spans the entire lifecycle of transportation-based software applications, from the initial planning efforts through system requirements definition, system design, development, implementation, hosting, and maintenance. We deliver strategic geospatial solutions and applications to empower our transportation clients to make smarter, more-informed decisions. The need to plan, budget, manage information, protect assets, and preserve resources is more important than ever. We help clients to meet their current and future goals through customized solutions. The true power of GIS lies in the integration of diverse information technologies, data formats, and systems. We apply GIS to integrate separate and disparate data formats to offer enhanced reporting, visibility, and analysis capabilities. Our services include the design, development, and deployment of data repositories, GIS, and Web-enabled information management systems. In addition, our Automatic Vehicle Location program, an enterprise asset management and tracking solution, improves clients business profitability and reduces their environmental impacts. This optimized routing and real-time tracking system identifies, tracks, locates, and analyzes users physical assets, resulting in reduced carbon emissions and lower energy use.
We strive to exceed our clients expectations by staying ahead of changing industry trends and incorporating a sustainable approach into each of our projects. Mass Transit and Rail Our firm has a national reputation in the planning and design of public transportation systems and is a leader in the specialized field of transit and rail. Utilizing world-class tools, our demonstrated capabilities include rail operations; systems integration; signal and train control, including fixed-block and communicationsbased, as well as positive train control and highway crossings; electrification, including distribution, substations, and catenary; communications; and trackwork. Tunnels Gannett Fleming s experience includes the planning, design, rehabilitation, and construction management of highway, railroad, rail transit, and utility tunnels. Our success is evidenced by our ability to work with and receive repeat assignments from a variety of clients, as well as our work on some of the industry s leading publications on tunnel management and operations. We bring considerable structural and geotechnical experience to tunnel design projects, which have included design of tunnels in both soft ground and in rock, using cut-and-cover construction, shield-driven, or drill-andblast tunneling techniques. Toll Roads and LEED Toll Facilities For some, the future is open road tolling. The key for agencies is to determine when their systems might go to 100 percent electronic toll collection and how to minimize today s capital cost improvements while maintaining the safety and conveniences to motorists during the transition. We offer economical and seamless solutions to help our clients develop the most viable approach. In addition, our in-depth knowledge and experience in toll facility design, coupled with our sustainable design techniques, places us at the top of the industry for LEED certified toll facility planning and design. In fact, we played an instrumental role in what will be the first LEED toll plaza in the U.S. Interestingly, such LEED toll facilities use approximately 15 percent less energy and 40 percent less potable water annually when compared to a typical facility.
Design-Build Gannett Fleming has been involved with innovative contracting, particularly designbuild, for more than 20 years. During this time, we have gained tremendous experience in contractor teaming, construction-driven design, and how to think outside the box to deliver the most appropriate, efficient, and beneficial projects for our clients. Our transportation design-build experience includes more than 45 high-profile highway, toll road, bridge, and transit and rail assignments.
