1 Instructions for Online Graduate Writing Support WCOnline is an online scheduling system that allows graduate students and distance learners to book face-to-face or online writing consultations with a graduate writing tutor in the Writing Center. During these sessions, you will be an active participant. Graduate Assistants will collaborate with you, help with questions, and offer suggestions for going forward. This service is only available to graduate students and distance learners at this time. WCOnline can be accessed from the St. Catherine University website by going to the Writing Services for Graduate Students section of the Writing/Reading Center page (via the O Neill Center for Academic Development page). You may also use the direct link: < We recommend that you use the most updated version of Mozilla Firefox as your browser as there have been issues encountered when using other browsers. Creating Your Account On your first visit to WCOnline, you will need to create an account. Your account must be created using your stkate.edu address. If you are a St. Thomas student in a dual program with St. Kate s, you are welcome to utilize the system and to use your stthomas.edu address; however, you must provide your St. Kate s student ID number in your profile.

2 Scheduling an Appointment When you log in to WCOnline, you are automatically taken to the graduate writing schedule. You will see the current week, yet you may click forward to the next week as well. You may book an appointment up to two weeks in advance. When you have found a time that works for you, click on the box for the time slot you d like to book. A new window will open up. If you do not see the new window, minimize your browser as sometimes the new window pops up behind the browser. In appointment form window, please fill out all of the required information. Describe your writing assignment as clearly as possible in the appointment form s Assignment Description section. Providing information about the assignment s expectations and guidelines is helpful for your tutor.

4 Uploading Your Paper You have the option of copy/pasting your writing into the Whiteboard of the chat; however, in doing so, your writing will lose all formatting. Instead, we suggest that you import your paper into the WCOnline chat by following these steps, which can be completed at any time before or during your scheduled appointment: Click on the red text Start or Join Online Consultation to enter the consultation. Once you have entered the consultation, click the opposing arrows icon in the top right corner. A box will open. Click browse and select the correct paper file. Please note: You can only import a paper that is in.doc,.txt, or.rtf format. Docx files will not work. You may need to re-save your paper as a.doc file, also known as Word document, before uploading it into the system. (For instructions on how to re-save as.doc, see the next page.)

5 Beginning Your Online Consultation At your scheduled time, log back into the program and click on your appointment time. Click Start or Join Online Consultation to begin your online consultation. Click on the silhouette icon (at the top right corner) to sign your name into the chat. To chat, enter text into the box in the lower right corner of the screen. Type your text and hit enter to post your text in the chat window. Chat window Whiteboard (paper text goes here) Chat text box How to re-save your paper in a WCOnline-compatible format (for Office 2010): 1. Click on the office button in the top left of the screen in Office Scroll down and click on Save as, then chick Word document. 3. Save and name your document. What to expect: For online sessions, the consultation begins as soon as you log into the chat. The consultant will begin to read your writing when the consultation begins. Appointments last up to 60 minutes. Be on time. Your session will automatically be canceled if you log in or arrive twenty minutes late. If you scheduled a face-to-face appointment, check in at the front desk of the O Neill Center (located on the lower level of CdC). Two no-shows in a semester will result in your account being locked until the end of the semester.
