1 Louis Vuitton to unveil a new cultural space in Venice and open its first exhibition WHERE SHOULD OTHELLO GO? by Pompeo Molmenti & Tony Oursler THE LOUIS VUITTON CULTURAL SPACE IN VENICE On 1 June this year, to coincide with the opening of the 55 th edition of the Biennale Internationale of Contemporary Art in Venice, Louis Vuitton is to inaugurate his very latest cultural space in the City of the Doges. Like the five other Louis Vuitton cultural spaces already in existence the world over (in Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei and Singapore), this centre is intended as a venue for the expression of contemporary art and an invitation on an original and authentic voyage to the heart of creation. Just a stone s throw from St Mark s Square, in the Maison Louis Vuitton (opening on 21 April 2013), the Louis Vuitton cultural space in Venice is where contemporary art meets Venice s artistic heritage. With each new exhibition, a contemporary artist will have carte blanche to respond with an original, in-situ creation to an art-work from the Venetian heritage. Putting traditional and modern art into context like this is a means of breaking down barriers, of re-attaching contemporary art to its roots and celebrating the extraordinary vitality and topicality of classical art. It s also an alternative way to portray the treasures of Venice. LOUIS VUITTON PATRONAGE IN VENICE This has been made possible thanks to the partnership that Louis Vuitton has formed with the Venice foundation for civic museums Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia (MUVE). Louis Vuitton has undertaken to restore artworks belonging to the MUVE foundation s heritage; in return, the MUVE is to lend artworks to the Louis Vuitton cultural space that will be imbued with new meaning thanks to the bold juxtaposition with a creation from the contemporary-art scene. THE WHERE SHOULD OTHELLO GO? EXHIBITION The first exhibition at the Venetian cultural space: Where should Othello go? (from 1 June to 24 November 2013) is the brainchild of Modern Art historian Adrien Goetz and exhibition curator Hervé Mikaleoff. It revolves around a work by artist Pompeo Molmenti ( ), which has been restored thanks to backing from Louis Vuitton. By giving pride of place to the masterpiece of a key figure in the history of Venetian art The Death of Othello

2 (1866), which depicts a legendary and emblematic character from the City of the Doges, the exhibition aims to pay homage to Venice in an original and evocative manner. Indeed, standing opposite Pompeo Molmenti s painting, an audio-visual installation by contemporary artist Tony Oursler (b. 1957) entitled Strawberry-Ecstasy-Green, inspires one to reconsider the classical interpretations of a work of art that is less conventional than it appears to be. Combining videos and forms sculpted in multi-coloured glass which cannot fail to remind one of the work of the Murano master glassblowers, Tony Oursler has brought to life the symbolism of the colours linked to the tragedy of Othello (the red of the Desdemona s assassination and Othello s suicide; the green of jealousy; the black skin colour and the final blackness of the soul of the Moor of Venice, etc.) to highlight timeless psychological traits and emotions. Centred on the figure of Othello, this Molmenti/Oursler encounter prompts the experience of the shock of contrasts and the charm of close and remarkable similarities alike. When it leaves the exhibition, Pompeo Molmenti s painting, The Death of Othello, will return to the Ca' Pesaro museum. Pompeo Molmenti Born in Veneto in 1819, Pompeo Molmenti started training at the Venice Fine-Arts academy in His earliest commissioned works (a Virgin with Child, a Saint Teresa or a Saint Paul were produced for bankers and Venetian patrons the Papadopoli family who were to remain loyal to him throughout his career and who were behind the creation of his masterpiece, The Death of Othello (1866), which took fourteen years to complete. Both a portrait painter and professor of painting at the Venice academy, Molmenti was a 19 th - century artist who combined realism and expressive lyricism in his paintings. He died in Venice in Tony Oursler Born in 1957 in New York, where he currently lives and works, Tony Oursler has revolutionised the meaning and scope of video in the field of contemporary art. By placing his videos in narrative contexts, taking them off the traditional screen setting and projecting them onto evocative sculpted forms, Tony Oursler creates installations that prompt a strong emotional impact in the spectator. Numerous one-person shows have been devoted to him including those at the Jeu de Paume in Paris in 2005, and more recently in Asia, in Hong Kong in 2012, and, coming up shortly, at Seoul in In January 2013, he made the amazing and iconoclastic clip of the David Bowie song Where are we now?". Adrien Goetz, writer and art historian, is the author of numerous publications and novels including Intrigue à Venise (Grasset-Le Livre de Poche) published in Hervé Mikaeloff is a contemporary-art adviser and exhibition curator.

3 La Fondazione Musei Civici Venezia (MUVE) was founded in 2008 to manage and promote the immense cultural and artistic heritage of Venice's civic museums. It oversees the running of the following eleven museums: the Doges Palace, the Correr Museum, the Clock Tower, the Ca' Rezzonico museum of 18th century Venice, the Mocenigo Palace museum, Carlo Goldoni s house, the Ca Pesaro, the Fortuny Palace, the glass museum, the lace museum and the natural-history museum.
