Within Anne Arundel Medical Center we provide Radiology services, to include CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound and Vascular Ultrasound, and P.E.T. scanning to the Emergency room, inpatient rooms, NICU, and all OR suites and PACUs in the hospital, Labor and Delivery, and Edwards. We also see many out patients for specialized exams and indications.

Radiology Technologists obtain an Associates or a Bachelor s degree in Radiological Sciences. During their training, they complete a minimum of 1,004 clinical hours, in addition to the required classes and labs. After graduation, Radiology Technologists can specialize into secondary certifications in MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound or Interventional Radiology. The RT (R) operate radiation producing equipment to visualize human anatomy for diagnosis of disease or abnormalities. Utilizing different Radiological equipment and techniques the technologist performs X-ray studies that include Fluoroscopy as well as routine Radiographs.

Accredited Ultrasound programs are full time and take approximately 14 months to complete. Upon graduation, the student is encouraged to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography exam to become registered in discipline of choice, i.e. Cardiac, General (obstetrics, abdominal, breast, etc), and Vascular. Ultrasound machines produce high-frequency sound waves for medical diagnosis and treatment, e.g. to create images of internal organs, or to treat tissue disorders without utilizing Radiation. Whether detecting a blood clot, stroke, or monitoring a fetus, ultrasound techs, known as sonographers are highly skilled professionals and valuable members of the health care team.

MRI provides a highly detailed scan of your body s internal structures, using a magnetic tube like scanner. Because the powerful magnet is always on, it is important to follow strict rules for MRI safety Pacemakers, surgically implanted metals and tattoos should be brought to the attention of the Technologist prior to the exam. Jewelry, hair decorations, metal pens, stretchers, etc can be pulled into the magnet and possibly injure yourself, or the patient! Never enter the MRI scan room alone. Always be escorted by an MRI tech who will know when it is safe to enter.

CT technologists are radiology techs who have been trained in this specialized modality. CT is a scan that combines X-rays with computer. The scans appear as slices thru the body which may show irregularities in the tissue, organs, or bones. To further enhance the images, the patient may need to follow a diet prep or drink oral contrast prior to the scan In addition, the patient may also be given an IV contrast during the scan

Nuclear Medicine Technologists are licensed professionals who have completed an accredited school of Nuclear Medicine and successfully passed the board certification exam. Nuclear Medicine Technologists prepare radioactive isotopes in a specialized Hot Lab and administer radioactive doses to patients Nuclear Medicine Technologists utilize gamma cameras to take images of the radioactivity inside the patients to help diagnose many disease processes such as cancer, and coronary artery disease.

Nuc Med Techs also administer therapeutic radioisotopes (i.e. Iodine 131) to cure diseases such as thyroid cancer. P.E.T. scanning is a specialized type Nuclear Medicine exam. AAMC has a P.E.T. scanner in Sajak AAD for out patient testing, and in the Donner Pavilion for in patient testing.

Radiology Escort transports patient from the Emergency and inpatient rooms to the various modalities within Radiology dept. The Radiology Escorts are not a part of the House Escort team and have different duties. Customer Service Representatives in Diagnosticsregisters out patients thru the ACP Diagnostics reception desk for hospital based X-ray, Nuclear Medicine, CT, EKG, ECHO, Sono, and Lab.

1) Many Ultrasound exams require the patients to have uncomfortably full bladders. 2) Contrary to popular rumors, Nuclear Medicine patients will NOT glow in the dark. 3) C.T. and CAT scans are the same study. (and do not involve felines) 4) X-ray, Nuclear Medicine, P.E.T., and CT scans involve diagnostic levels of radiation. AAMC follows the American College of Radiology s Image Wisely and Image Gently guidelines to assure Adult and Pediatric patients receive appropriate testing at the lowest radiation levels possible.

Many Radiology studies require female patients between years of age to have a negative pregnancy test prior to the study. M.R.I. magnets are so strong, they have been known to suck in entire stretchers, wheelchairs, housekeeping carts, and demagnetize credit cards. Our CT department at AAMC performs 26,400 studies per year, one of the busiest in the State. AAMC CT is a Nationally Recognized Low Dose Facility

The Radiologist is a Physician who interprets images obtained by the Technologists
