3 STEP-C Background Each of the 167 UK HEIs have application architectures built with Different combinations of Best of Breed applications Applications that are linked with point-to-point interfaces Few standards for interfaces which are shared across the entire sector Hence, each University has a different starting point and also a different size of IT department

4 STEP- C Background Each Institution has the following major drivers affecting them during the next few years Major financial pressures across all parts of University finances Increasing expectations of students but without corresponding funding Need to introduce more and better administrative systems and all of these demands will be hitting us very quickly

5 STEP- C Background thus, we need to be able to demonstrate approaches that make University IT applications LEAN i.e. cheaper to run and AGILE more quickly implemented, changed SOA provides one set of tools which may enable IT departments to achieve some of these goals

24 DMU, SSU Learning & Plan DMU need to fix any internal issues concerning data consistency WITHIN DMU We need to get standards in place for developing SOA interfaces to applications not only for the data elements to be transferred but also for naming important fields Larger task to educate our IT staff to change their mind-set and approach so that they use SOA approaches rather than their current/traditional approaches this is a major change management/cultural issue which can too easily be overlooked and under-estimated
