Flute Instructor: Ms. Young Hee (Liz) Choe Young Hee Choe has earned B.M in flute performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she studied with Timothy Day (San Francisco symphony principle) M.M in flute performance from Northwestern University under Professor Walfrid Kujala (former member of Chicago symphony). She previously taught at Head Royce school in Oakland California, and currently teaches flute and piano privately. She has performed with many orchestras and performed chamber music throughout the states. She also has won numerous awards, including a Young Musician Foundation, 2nd place in Fremont Young Artist Concerto competition, 1st place in SCMF (Southern California Music Festival), Korea times music competition and 1st place in Burlingame solo music competition. She has also studied at music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, Julius Baker master class. She is currently a member of the National Flute Association and Korea Flute Educators Association. Ms. Choe teaches on Wednesdays and Saturdays. For further information, please contact Ms. Choe at or via e mail: [email protected] Flute Instructor: Ms. Seung Yeon Lee Seung Yeon Lee received her B.A. from Sang Myung University and her M.A. from Sofia National Music Academy in Bulgaria. Currently she is a lecturer at the Daegu Art Music University and Joongbu University and has been teaching lessons at SFS since Ms. Lee is also a member of the La Fiontana Flute Ensemble. Ms. Lee teaches on Tuesdays. In addition, she offers private home instructions on Saturdays and Sundays. Ms. Jung worked as a music teacher in middle and high from and for 10 years served as a choir director. She has experience as a private instructor at SFS since Ms. Jung teaches on Tuesday. 2 Piano Instructor: Ms. Sung ah (Hannah) Kim Ms. Kim studied in London for ten years receiving both MMus and BMus degrees from the Royal Academy of Music and her early education was at the Purcell Specialist s Music School and Royal Junior College of Music. She studied with Kathryn Stott and Aaron Shorr and appeared in various solo and chamber music concerts including recital at the Bolivar Hall in London organized by the Venezuelan Embassy and piano duo performance at the Purcell Room in collaboration with the London Sinfonietta. She received the Nancy Dickinson Award from the Royal Academy and also received LRAM (Licentiate Royal Academy of Music) piano teaching qualification during her undergraduate studies. She has been teaching performance, theory, sight reading, aural, etc. to many students from various nationalities from complete beginners to high level players, incorporating ABRSM curriculum, tutor books for beginners, and many other music selections from popular classical albums. She is currently at the Yonsei University D.M.A (Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance) course. Ms. Kim is available for home instruction on Tuesdays from 3 6 pm, Thursdays from 3 to 6 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. For further details, please contact Ms. Kim at or via [email protected] Piano & Voice Instructor: Mrs. Esther Jun As a choral conductor, a music educator, and a piano accompanist, Esther Jun comes from a rich background of teaching music to all ages from preschoolers to adults. Her teaching experience includes 20 years of private piano lessons, 15 years of directing adult and children s choirs, and 9 years of teaching general music. Her main goal is to teach children to enjoy and love music by incorporating movement and singing to private piano lessons. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano performance from San Jose State University, California, and a Master s degree in Choral Conducting from Joong Ang University in Seoul Korea, where she studied with an internationally renowned choral conductor, Yoon Hak Won. She is available for lessons at SFS on Mondays from 3 6 pm, Wednesdays from 5 6 pm, Thursdays from 4:15 6 pm, and Fridays from 3 6 pm. She worked as a music teacher in middle school for 9 years and served as a choir director for 5 years and piano accompanist for over 5 years at the Seoul Union Church. Ms. Park s experience as a private teacher since1988 has given her a mature level of teaching skills which has proven effective for most students regardless of their age or capacities. The main focus of her instruction is to help students draw enjoyment out of music from themselves and express that in playing piano. Ms. Park also assists students to build a balanced basis in sight reading, rhythm, theory, and technique. Ms. Park teaches on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. 3 Piano & Harp Instructor: Mrs. Joo Lee Mrs. Lee has been a music teacher at international schools including SFS for 7 years. She studied harp and piano at ANU in Australia, focusing on performance, teaching, and development of instructional materials and activities. For harp, students must be at least 8 years old and have at least 6 months experience playing the piano. Mrs. Lee is available for lessons at your home on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. For further information, please contact Mrs. Lee at or via [email protected] Piano Instructor: Ms. Jihyun Shyn Jihyun Shyn graduated from Ewha Women s University, majoring in classical piano. She has been teaching piano for 20 years and has been teaching SFS students from elementary through high school since She also played accompaniment for the Elementary and Middle School Music concerts for 9 years. Mrs. Shyn teaches students at various levels, from beginners to advanced, and caters to the individual needs of each student. For the textbook, she uses Alfred s Basic Piano Course Books and holds piano recitals for her students every semester at school. Mrs. Shyn has two kids, both of whom graduated from SFS. Ms. Shyn teaches Monday through Thursday. She has been teaching many students regardless of their ages or capacities over 10 years. Her students have been successful in the ABRSM (Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music) exams. She holds students piano recital every year at school. She also has been working as a music substitute teacher at SFS since Ms. Lee is available for lessons at your home in addition to teaching at SFS on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3 6 pm. For further information, please contact Ms. Lee at or via [email protected] Piano: Ms. Hae Jung Park Ms. Hae Jung Park specializes in teaching piano to students of all ages, as well to all levels of play from beginners to more advance. In her excellence at Myong Ji University, majoring in piano, she was awarded an International Scholarship during her time there. Ms. Park is still actively performing in various music festivals and church events around Seoul. She also can engage students in learning how to sing while playing the piano as she is also a music instructor at the Global School teaching piano, choir and directing the Global School Quartet. 4 Piano, Theory & Voice Instructor: Ms. Grace Kim Grace Kim has received her music degree MusB (Hons) from the University of Manchester, UK. After gaining a music teacher qualification (PGCE), she worked in a Boy's Grammar School in England as a general music teacher. Before coming to Seoul Foreign School (SFBS), she taught children from Primary to High School. Ms. Kim has been teaching piano (ABRSM exams) and theory for 15 years and also working as a choral conductor, orchestra director, musical director and a church piano accompanist for several years. She has good experience of teaching across a broad range of ages and abilities. She has taught students with special educational needs and high school students who had offers from the Royal College of Music and Oxford University. Her school choirs have won the first prize twice in prestigious music competitions in the UK. Ms. Kim also entered a student to become a member of the highly regarded Cathedral Choristers. She has found that working with students is one of the most rewarding life experiences she has had. She prepares students for the ABRSM exams for piano, theory and voice; as well as teaching for enjoyment. Ms. Kim teaches Monday through Thursday. For further information, please contact Ms. Kim at or via e mail: [email protected] Violin Instructor: Ms. Ji Sun Lee Ms. Lee is a violinist and received her Doctorate degree in Music performance (violin) from Michigan State University. She has taught at University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malyasia as a visiting senior lecturer until April, Ms. Lee has more than 10 years of teaching experience. For the past 5 years, she had been teaching at University of Seoul, Baeseok University, Kangnam University, and Sunhwa Art School. She had also taught at Michigan State University CMS, Charles Stewart Mott College, and Flint institute of Performing Art for about 5 years in U.S. As a performer, she has played in many orchestras and given many solo, duo, chamber recitals, and lectures abroad in U.S, South Korea, and Malaysia. Currently, she is a principal at Millennium chamber ensemble, a leader of Chamber 'Nuvelle', and teaching at University of Seoul and SFS. She loves God and loves to communicate with children through music. She is available for instruction on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:05 to 6:05 pm. For further information, please contact Ms. Lee at or via [email protected] Violin Instructor: Hyo Eun Sohn Ms. Sohn graduated from Daejeon Arts High School and received her bachelor's degree in violin from Hanyang University. Serving as concertmaster at Hanyang orchestra during her years in the university, she also actively performed with the greatest orchestras and conductors including String Chamber Orchestra in Poland Orchestra and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. In particular, her violin solo performance of Faust (Gounod) was highly acclaimed (which was conducted by prof. Herik Sheafer). In addition, Ms. Sohn has been teaching children of all ages for more than 10 years. Her experience includes teaching amateur orchestra at Hanyang University in the College of Medicine, as well as at a number of elementary schools around Seoul. Ms. Sohn is passionate about teaching music and loves children. She hopes to impact her students by teaching the beauty of life through music. 5 Violin Instructor: Ms. Julianne Choi Julianne Choi studied at University of Western Ontario in Canada. Ms. Choi teaches a combination of practical violin playing, some music theory, and for beginners with no previous music instruction, the basics of the piano. Her method includes the Suzuki method with Canada s Royal Conservatory of Music Program which enables the student to learn the violin not only by ear but by developing their musical and technical skills evenly. Ms. Choi provides 2 student recitals a year and also RCM examinations for the students who wish to sit them. Ms. Choi teaches on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. For further information, please contact Ms. Choi at or via [email protected] Violin Instructor: Ms. Lucia Hyun Sil Roh Lucia Hyunsil Roh holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Violin Performance with distinction from the Eastman School of Music, a Master s of Music degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Ms. Roh graduated from University of Wisconsin with a Doctor of Musical Arts (Major: Violin Performance, Distributed Minor: Music Education and String Pedagogy.) Also, she received Suzuki Teacher s Training Certification. Ms. Roh enjoys a multi faceted career as a recitalist, chamber musician, orchestral player, and teacher throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. She was a member of the first violin section with the Madison Symphony Orchestra (2007~2011.) Dedicated to community outreach, she represented the Madison Symphony Orchestra and University of Wisconsin Madison through live performances and education in elementary schools throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. Ms. Roh served as the chamber and orchestra sectional coach dedicated to young string players at WYSO (2007~2011.) She also taught at Music Makers, anon profit organization in Madison, Wisconsin that offers violin lessons to children from underrepresented backgrounds. Currently, she is a faculty member at Sun hwa Arts School, Sun Hwa Arts High School, and Dan Kuk University Continuing Education. For further information, please contact Ms. Roh at or via [email protected] Violin Instructor: Mr. Tim McCann Tim McCann studied at Rice University and gained a Bachelor s Degree in Violin performance from Peabody Conservatory and a Master s Degree from Indiana University. Mr. McCann has taught in several schools in the US. He has performed at Summer Festivals and is currently Concertmaster of Insiem Orchestra. Mr. McCann s students can expect a challenging, yet fun learning environment with emphasis on technical development and music making. Each student is encouraged to work on scales and/or etudes as well as an appropriate solo piece, including emphasis on intonation, becoming familiar with different positions and melodic phrasing. 6 Voice Instructor: Ms. Young Hee Kim Ms. Kim studied in the United States for over 11 years, receiving both Master s degree of Music and Doctor s degree of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Maryland where she won numerous scholarships. As a full time international NATS member and visiting teacher at Gyeonggi Suwon International School, Ms. Kim has been teaching different levels of singers from beginners to high level performers. As a choir director, performer, and passionate instructor in the USA and South Korea for over 20 years, Ms. Kim s beautiful voice tone quality was recently awarded as a finalist in the Art Song Division of the American Prize in Vocal Performance. Ms. Kim s goal, as a voice teacher, is to enlighten her students use their voices more easily and beautifully, thereby supporting them to experience greater joy in singing and to build on success through their vocal growth. Ms. Kim s students will participate in an annual recital to share the beauty of music with others. Ms. Kim teaches Monday through Saturday at her studio and/or Mondays, and Fridays at SFS. For further information, please contact Ms. Kim at or via [email protected] Vocal Instructor: Mrs. Yeon Kyeong Lee Mrs. Lee is currently on her 9 th season as a member of the Seoul Metropolitan Musical Theater. While at the SMMT she has been featured in leading roles in productions such as, The Wizard of Oz as Glinda, Jesus Christ Super Star as Mary and Annie as Grace, receiving 2 nominations as Rookie of the Year at the Korea National Awards in 05 & 07. A graduate from Catholic University of Korea in Seoul, Mrs. Lee has been featured in performances at the Blue House before the President of Korea. She has also been featured in ARTE TV and at the movie Harmony directed by Kang Dae Gyu, by dubbing the singing of actresses Kim Yun Jin and Kang Ye Won. Mrs. Lee would like to share her passion for singing with students aiming to succeed at school oriented activities. She is prepared to teach a variety of styles ranging from classical, jazz and pop. She bases her work on the book Sing like a Star written by vocal trainer Seth Riggs, who taught celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Natalie Cole, Jennifer Lopez, among others. Mrs. Lee is available for instruction Monday through Sunday. For further inquiries please contact Mrs. Lee at or via at [email protected] Voice Instructor: Jong Baek Yoon This program is recommended to the students who want to develop their vocal skills with contemporary popular songs. Students will be focusing on the speech level singing vocal methodology by Seth Riggs and Roger Love (Vocal instructors for great vocalists such as Michael Jackson and Maroon 5 s Adam Levine). They will understand how they should use their whole body effectively in singing. Mr. Yoon offers this course on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 3:05 5:30. 7 Voice Instructor: Ms. Onyu Josephine Park Ms. Onyu Josephine Park holds a Performing Arts Diploma in Opera from the Frankfurter Musik Hochschule in Germany and has performed in many operas, oratorios, and concerts in Germany, Italy, the U.S. and South Korea. Of her recent performances as Atlanta (Xerxes), the Washington Post called her an enormously talented soprano and actress whose eye rolls upstaged everyone in the cast. A Fulbright Scholar and a Valedictorian from Seoul National University, Ms. Park graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree. Recently, she recorded a world premiere recording of German Lieder by the composer and pianist Walter Gieseking with the Naxos Company. She has been invited to perform the same repertoire at the American Musicological Society in Philadelphia. At the University of Maryland she has taught voice minor students and English, Latin, German, and French Diction to the undergraduate voice majors. Ms. Park speaks English, German, French, Italian, and Korean fluently and has maintained a private voice studio for 14 years. She has served as a children s and adults choral director at churches in Frankfurt, Germany, and the Washington D.C. area. Currently, she is an adjunct faculty at Seoul National University. Ms. Park teaches Mondays thru Saturdays at her studio. For further information, please contact Ms. Park at or via [email protected] Percussions Instructor: Mr. Raul Vergara Raul Vergara holds B.M. and M.M. from the Curtis Institute of Music and Temple University in Philadelphia, respectively. He has performed with celebrated orchestras, such as, the Philadelphia Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic. He has been a member of the World Youth Orchestra, Orchestra of the Americas, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, as well as, National Repertory, Spoleto, Verbier and Schleswig Holstein Music Festival Orchestras. He is Artistic Director at Yonsei International Campus Performing Arts Series and Latin American Ensemble CHIKO. He has been featured in Arirang TV shows Semipermanent and The Innerview and has performed for KBS and ARTE TV. Mr. Vergara is on his 5 th season as Associate Principal Percussionist with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, I am prepared to teach students of all levels and ages in either individual or group lessons in a variety of instruments ranging from drum set, orchestra and Latin percussions. I am, prepared to help you develop in any direction you desire, whether it is to play drums along your favorite rock & pop music or to develop skills that may help you excel in school and KAIAC ensembles. 8 SWEP PARENT AGREEMENT-MUSIC LESSONS As a parent/guardian of Seoul Foreign School (SFS), when signing my child up for individual music lessons with an SFS SWEP instructor, I agree to comply with the following terms and conditions. 1. The parent/guardian will pay, in advance, a nonrefundable fee directly to the music instructor, at the beginning of each month by either cash or bank transfer. 2. Returning music students must also pay a non-refundable one month in advance fee directly to their instructor on the day of signup to secure their place for the new semester. 3. If the child or parent/guardian decides to discontinue or terminate lessons, he / she must inform the instructor and SWEP Coordinator, in written form, 14 days in advance, in order to allow enough time for that instructor to find a replacement. 4. Once the parent/guardian agrees to a day and time for a music lesson this must be adhered to. The instructor cannot be expected to change the days of lesson times on an ad hoc basis. 5. If your child is unable to attend a lesson for any reason, the parent/guardian must inform the instructor. However, the instructor is not obliged to refund money or to reschedule the missed lesson. 6. If the instructor has to cancel a lesson, he / she will notify the student s parent/guardian and the SWEP Coordinator as soon as possible. The instructor will try to reschedule the class but if this is not possible he / she is obliged to refund the money for that class. 7. Private music lessons for beginner and intermediate students at the elementary and middle school level must be charged at the fee scale set by SFS. These fixed prices are: 55,000 won for 60 minutes, 40,000 won for 45 minutes, and 30,000 won for 30 minutes. For advanced students in the middle and high school music instructors are able to set their own fee scale. 8. The class will begin and end promptly at the times agreed upon by the instructor and SWEP Coordinator. In all cases, the instructor and student(s) will leave the school premises no later than 6:00 p.m. 9. The instructor will not allow students to remain in the facility space unattended, especially at the conclusion of the class while the student(s) are waiting to be picked up. 10. In the event that a student walks homes after the end of a class without a parent/guardian, the instructor will require a note from the parent/guardian which will be kept on file. 11. If a parent/guardian is repeatedly late in picking up his or her child, then the instructor will contact the SWEP Coordinator. SFS will not be responsible for the supervision of students after normal SFS school hours. 12. If students are sent home early due to weather conditions, the SWEP Coordinator will attempt to notify the instructor as soon as possible so that they may contact the parent(s) and cancel the lesson. 13. In the case of any misunderstandings or queries, the parent should first contact the child s music instructor. If not resolved, the SWEP Coordinator has the right to intervene until a satisfactory resolution is reached. 14.
