WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY Today the question of wether or not to build sustainable is no longer an issue LA VILHELM LAURITZEN ARCHITECTS Sustainability is an integrated part of almost any project. The degree of sustainability however is a question of choice. The degree of sustainability is determined by a series of complex prerequisites combined with a number of priorities to be established during the first stages of a building project Design does not compromise sustainability on the contrary we believe that Design is a highly feasible strategy for sustainability. INTRUDUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY

The architects job is to prove this by demonstrating the wide range of possibilities when creating buildings with high standards of design as well as high levels of sustainability. In the optimal situation sustainability should be achieved by taking a very broad perspective including analysis and actions relating to the surrounding context, landscape and climate combined with detailed strategies concerning energy use, materials and flow within the building. /05

PRACTISING SUSTAINABILITY LA VILHELM LAURITZEN ARCHITECTS The starting point, when practising sustainability, in any given project is to take a holistic approach to the project right from the beginning. Flexibility and openness towards creating valuable collaborations are prerequisites when it comes to securing the holistic approach, and that is why we all ways strive towards creating the right teams including the best professional skills ensuring that our clients have acces to state-of-the-art consultancy and tools for implementing the optimal solutions in each unique project. Our primary responsibility as architects is to insure the presence of that vitality, enabling the city form to reflect and produce life and movement - Thomas Scheel, Architect maa VLA AND SUSTAINABILITY

LA VILHELM LAURITZEN ARCHITECTS VLA emphasizes five primary issues when working with sustainability. We believe that these five issues together create an overall synthesis which is a feasible strategy for sustainability: The brief: The brief is screened in order to reveal it s sustainable potential and thus determine the level of ambition regarding sustainability. Design: What is the sustainable nature of the project regarding the site and climate conditions? And what are the possibilities regarding social sustainability such as working enviroment and health issues. VLA AND SUSTAINABILITY Tecnology: Which sustainable technological add-ons shoud be consided in the project. Economy: What will it take to establish the best balance between sustainability and architecture, concerning construction costs vs. operation costs. Action: An overall sustainable strategy is established in cooperation with the client, users and other relevant stakeholders.

Our experience tells us that with this apporach we can as a minimum can create buildings that are characterised by: High quality architecture Flexible in use / reuse Reducing operation costs And most important we create buildings that combine minimal energy consumption and maximum well being. /09

HANZA CITY IN RIGA Creating the possibility of choice Since sustainable solutions were not part of the brief the aim was to create a number of options within the proposal allowing the client to consider several sustainable measures: The overall concept behind the project is that the financial centre interacts with the green zone that is part of the city plan. In order to utilize the green zone as much as possible, the project suggests an expansion of the original site in order to create a city park that is in direct contact with the zone. The atrium configuration of the buildings provides the possibility to implement several sustainable elements into the complex. The double glass facades and the large volumes of the atriums can work together to provide natural ventilation for much of the year. Solar cells can be integrated into the glass facades and there is also the potential to collect and re-use rainwater. VILHELM LAURITZEN ARCHITECTS CASE #1 CITY FLOWERS IN RIGA

VILHELM LAURITZEN ARCHITECTS PEDESTRIAN ZONES Axis cutting through site creates shortcuts for pedestrians arriving at the main plaza, Pedestrians are lead from the primary thoroughfare and traffic terminus to the park. CASE #1 CITY FLOWERS IN RIGA DIAGRAMS CITY LIFE ZONES Space between the buildings is divided into zones. Public space is centered around the plaza and axis. In this case sustanability was a main focus in the programme from masterplan level to the selection of materials. The design focuses on a highly complex infrastructure creating a compact building which includes double facades enabling natural ventilation, solar panels integrated into the building, cooling by outdoor air and groundwater, and rainwater collection. The building is totally free of PVC, and all building materials have been screened to ensure that the environmental impact is reduced to an absolute minimum. 26 HAVREVANGEN Small scale project that creates highly sustainable living Client/Property Developer: Frederiksborg Boligseskab Architects: Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects Consultant Engineers: Cenergia ApS and Dominia A/S Landscape Architects: Jeppe Aagaard Andersen Contractor: KKS Entreprise A/S Area: m² Year: The Havrevang development, completed in 1994, is a small scale building project which comprises fifty social housing homes featuring high-insulation lowemission windows and the recycling of heat from the ventilation system thus allowing overall heat consumption to be cut to half the normal level. The homes were an experimental project and built from familiar, maintenance-friendly materials, of which the fire-rated impregnated cedar siding facades are the most pronounced. The aim was to create a highly sustainable housing development with significantly reduced energy costs. VILHELM LAURITZEN ARCHITECTS CASE #3 HAVREVANGEN GENERAL PROJECT INFO

PROJECT SUMMARY 55% saving on energy bill was achieved with this solar low energy housing building project. The project comprises 50 new dwellings demonstrating an integrated energy saving and renewable energy utilisation concept employing the following principles: Active solar heating using air collectors and air to water heat exchangers. High Insulation levels, low U-value glazing, Heat recovery for ventilation air. Hydrologic floor heating. Hybrid solar storage integrated in the floor construction. low temperature district heating. 30 VLA LA VILHELM LAURITZEN ARCHITECTS VLA - Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects is a well-established Danish architectural practice which combines roots in Scandinavian modern architecture with contemporary international practice. VLA was founded in 1922 and is currently led by the fourth generation of partners. The practice won commissions for the first permanent Airport terminal at Copenhagen and the first building for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation in the 1930 s. These works set the tone for our professional work and continue to influence our portfolio today. VLA emphasizes creativity in our design work combined with uncompromising functional solutions. This combined with the strong Scandinavian tradition regarding sustainable architecture has made VLA one of the most experienced architechtural firms, when it comes to creating sustainable architecture.
