Your success is our success. Founded in 1885, Springfield College is a private, coeducational institution offering graduate and undergraduate programs that reflect its distinctive humanics philosophy educating the whole person in spirit, mind, and body for leadership in service to humanity. We have been awarding graduate degrees since In our history, we have educated more than 45,000 people, and we currently serve more than 5,000 traditional, non-traditional and international students at our main campus in Springfield and our nine School of Human Services campuses throughout the country. We have a unique tradition and a renowned reputation as a pioneer in the human-helping professions. Throughout the U.S. and in more than 60 nations around the world, our graduates are strengthening communities, helping to rebuild broken lives, encouraging learning, healing the sick, promoting health and wellness, and counseling those in need. We are dedicated to supporting our students in the pursuit of their life s work because we feel the best way to fulfill our goal as an institution to effect positive change in communities around the world is to provide our graduates the means and the opportunity to do it. It s their passion and hard work that make it happen. Whether you are coming directly from undergraduate school, switching careers, or looking to advance within your current career, Springfield College graduate programs will set you on the right course to achieve your personal and professional goals. We provide a solid foundation of knowledge balanced with practical, hands-on experience within a fully supportive learning community. Our campus is home to a diverse and enthusiastic student body, a dedicated faculty, and state of the art educational and recreational facilities. Here you will find all of the resources you will need to further yourself in your studies and achieve balance in your life. Building enduring relationships that will carry on long after you leave, the College will continue to be a resource for you throughout your life. As a graduate student you will be immersed in a rigorous course of study. You will apply your knowledge in realworld situations. You will make valuable connections with fellow students, faculty, alumni, and prospective employers. You will leave here knowledgeable, confident, connected, and prepared to be a leader in your chosen field and in your community. Our graduate programs train people for the kind of work that requires the dedication and commitment of a person s whole being spirit, mind, and body. The pressure is high because the stakes are high, but so are the rewards. We re here to help you to succeed. Our success depends on it.

By visiting our internship sites, where the faculty actually go to the site, we have an opportunity to meet the folks on the front line, compare and contrast our notes with what the students are learning and ask, How is the student doing with your technology? What are some of the things that we ought to bring back to the classroom that can keep us on the cutting edge? And our connections are wow. We have over 384 internship sites now. We go to the site. We observe the student at the site. We work with the site on projects and many spinoffs occur as a result of that. It s a factor that the business world calls an intangible that has untold dividends that come back as a result of that partnership with the sites. It certainly reinforces and helps students with job placement, that s definite. And it keeps the faculty continually fresh. It s also like having an extended group of alums. In the sense that they re not alums, but they re more than just an acquaintance. All of a sudden we re getting referrals from people we work with at these sites. You know, somebody from NFL headquarters will call up and say, I ve got a student who might be interested in your program. Would you talk to him? So it s like a two-way partnership, a two-way street that way. You can t beat that. That s how the family works. It s all about connections. And that s where we ve been light years ahead of all the other schools. Here, on campus, sport and recreation have been number one players for a long time. The recreation portion was started in 1946 and sport management was started in the mid-80s. With our remarkable history in physical education, sport, and recreation, we re miles ahead in terms of those relationships and those partnerships. It makes a difference. Matthew J. Pantera / Chair mpantera@spfldcol.edu

We re not new to this game we practically invented it. What does running an NFL stadium on game day have in common with running a summer recreation program at the local YMCA? A lot more than you might think. Both have operating budgets, personnel to manage, facilities to maintain, events to plan, and people to serve. The difference between the two is really just a matter of scale. In the first case, there are 60,000 screaming fans, and in the other there are several hundred high-energy kids. Either way, the job of the manager is to provide a safe, well-run operation that people can enjoy. The Springfield College Sport Management and Recreation graduate program is a well-run operation for people interested in careers in sports administration, recreation management, and therapeutic recreation management. Since our beginnings in 1885 when we were founded as a leadership training school for YMCA professionals, Springfield College has understood the importance of recreation, sport, and fitness in people s lives. We invented basketball. One of our alumni invented volleyball. We helped pioneer the field of physical education, and advocated for the formation of National Parks where recreational opportunities would exist for all. We ve also lead the way in training people to run and manage sport and recreation facilities and programs across the U.S. and around the world. We have a wellearned and well-established reputation of excellence and a widespread network of personal relationships with organizations and alumni in the field that look to SC for the best and the brightest entering this growing field.

Today, career opportunities abound in the fields of sport management and recreation. A multibillion-dollar industry, new openings for sport management and recreation professionals are growing faster than average for all other professions. Likewise, the recreation industry recognizes the need for well-prepared, knowledgeable individuals to create and manage high quality youth and community agencies, resorts, health clubs, private recreation businesses, armed forces, school, college, municipal, and government recreation and fitness programs. Men and women holding graduate degrees in sport management and recreation will have the best opportunity for an increasing number of administrative positions. Springfield College offers graduate programs in the following areas of concentration: > Sport Management > Recreation Management > Therapeutic Recreation Management > Child Life Specialist Growing, too, are the numbers of new populations needing special expertise in recreation management: a surging number of senior citizens, persons with disabilities, children with chronic health problems, and social service agencies and corporations that more and more are incorporating recreation programs into their rehabilitation and training programs.

Skills The course work in sport management and recreation management emphasizes four major competencies: > business administration > facility design, operations and maintenance > event management > research Students develop their business skills in areas such as marketing, legal issues, budgeting, personnel and human resource management, and public relations. They study how to best manage a range of sport and recreation facilities from stadiums and arenas to public golf courses to municipal swimming pools, and are exposed to the many aspects of event management including planning, scheduling, and promoting events and programs. Finally, through in-depth research, students explore a variety of issues within the sport and recreation industry. The topics of our research projects have included stadium design, the superstitions of NFL fans, comparing government and private facility operation efficiency, and many others. Research subjects are chosen by individual students in consultation with their faculty advisors in areas that best suit their personal and professional interests. A recent voluntary research project entailed surveying security initiatives at collegiate sport venues. Students tackled the project with great excitement regardless of the fact that they received no academic credit. The Game Day Security Checklist was constructed to assist athletic directors, stadium and arena managers, and directors of security in maintaining the unique collegiate sport atmosphere while adhering to strong risk management principles for the good of public safety. The research team s hard work and diligence culminated when USA TODAY published the Game Day Security Operations Checklist as part of a cover story on sports and terrorism in both their print and online publications.

Some say it s not what you know; it s who you know. We say it s both. Our faculty is a dedicated and diverse group of successful business people, sport management professionals, scholars, and world-class networkers. They all bring different talents to the table with expertise in marketing, finance and budgeting, legal issues, personnel, management, operations, public relations, research, and women and gender issues. They teach their own classes, and are always available to meet with students. The door is always open. Faculty Our high rate of success combined with small class sizes makes for a highly competitive admission process for a limited number of openings. We are looking for students with high GPAs as well as a demonstrated commitment to helping to improve the human condition. All applications must include the The Sport Management and Recreation program requires the successful completion of a minimum or 40 semester hours of graduate credit. Today s recreation managers need to understand modern management theories and their application to effectively deal with an ever-changing assortment of twenty-first century management issues. Cultural diversity in the workplace, downsizing the organization, total quality management (TQM), and the shift to a service-driven global economy are some of the issues managers are prepared to address.
