3 wikipwdia AUSTIN, TX Mobile ticketing solution for Capital Metro Bytemark and INIT partner on Austin fare project With the opening of a new bus rapid transit service in the capital city of Texas, Capital Metro decided to offer passengers a faster, more convenient way to pay for fares. After implementing CapMetro App, a new mobile ticketing app, the only challenge left was finding validators that were capable of reading the new 2-D bar-coded tickets. Plus, robust enough to handle the extreme temperatures of Austin's scorching summers. Austin is the capital of Texas and the 11th-largest city in the U.S. The city is the cultural and economic center of the five-county Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area, which has an estimated population of 1.8m. Austin summers are usually hot, with average July and August temperatures in the high 90s F to the low 100s F. INITiative
4 Capotal Metro Improved Service INIT's PROXmobil2 onboard MetroRapid BRT is the first onboard reader in North America used for 2-D coded mobile ticket validation on public transit. Background In 2012, Capital Metro partnered with Bytemark for a mobile ticket pilot during the world-renowned Formula One race held in Austin, Texas. The ease of deployment and flexibility of the Bytemark platform convinced Capital Metro to further expand on the pilot and implement a mobile ticketing app on their transit system. The CapMetro App, which uses a 2-D barcode, became the agency's new mobile ticket offering and was soon after made available to riders as a free download from Capital Metro's website. Bytemark needed a partner to supply the onboard validators for the new mobile ticket project. The company recognized INIT as an experienced ITS and fare collection vendor with a proven track record of delivering quality hardware in the public transit industry. They chose to partner with the company for the implementation of ticket validators for Capital Metro's new mobile ticket project. The ticket validators were not only functional for reading the 2-D tickets, but could also withstand temperatures of 120 F or more and function reliably. Quicker boarding INIT's ticket validators are installed at all three doors onboard MetroRapid buses, Metro's Bus Rapid Transit fleet. This allows passengers to scan their mobile tickets as they board, speeding up the boarding process. The new ticket app and validators are also cost effective to operate as they eliminate the need for visual inspections by drivers or fare inspectors which can slow the boarding process and increase operating costs. Real-time processing Behind the scenes, the readers communicate with the back office systems through a mobile access router. The INIT and Bytemark back office systems are integrated in order to provide near real-time transmission of ticket information to 4 INITiative

The partnership marks the first Finnish customer for INIT within the technologically innovative Nordic countries. Finland s state-of-the-art public transport system is currently under development in the country s third-largest metropolitan area. transport within the region. ID-based fare management For Turku, INIT will implement a particularly innovative fare management system with the revolutionary ID-based Ticketing. This means that all information is stored and managed in the back office system in real-time. The smart card itself only contains a unique identification number (ID). This solution allows for a flexible and inexpensive use of various fare media (2D barcode, proximity card, etc.) and offers more abuse protection in case of card loss. The back office system that will process and provide efficient sales management is INIT s MOBILEvario. It also provides full multi-agency capability and is individually configurable by the agencies. At first, some 200 vehicles will be connected to the system and fitted with the combined onboard computer and smart card reader, EVENDpc. In addition, the self-service terminal, PROXmobil, will be installed in the vehicles. It allows a speedy check-in so passengers can board more quickly and waiting times can be cut. EVENDpc takes care of all e-fare and ITCS functions within the vehicle and guarantees communication with the head office. Real-time information about the traffic situation, as well as on the position and condition of individual vehicles, will allow dispatchers to react quickly to unforeseen circumstances or breakdowns. This information is also an important precondition for providing passengers with reliable real-time information on all channels, such as wayside displays, over the Internet and on smart phones. INIT technology allows Turku to implement a revolutionary integrated e-fare and ITCS system supporting them to realize their future plans. 8 INIT s track record in fare management: 25 years of e-fare success Because of INIT s success in CAD/ AVL imple mentations worldwide, many have branded the company as a fleet management-only ITS vendor. But the fact is that in the last 25 years, INIT has installed more than 50 ticketing and e-fare systems for customers in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. using state-of-the-art fare technologies. The first ticketing project INIT implemented was in Oberhausen, Germany in Three years later, the city of Hamburg was added using a combined paper ticket and electronic purse smart card. Over the next five years, a dozen other projects including combined e-ticketing and CAD/AVL systems were installed by INIT. Between 2001 and 2012, INIT installed ten more e-fare solutions including every possible method of electronic fare collection on the market at that time; account-based cards, closed-loop smart cards (agency-only use), open payment smart cards, and mobile ticketing solutions. INIT also signed on for their first North American smart card project in Sacramento, California. Then, in 2013 and 2014, INIT won three of their most innovative projects to date: the city of Turku, Finland opted for an ID-based system with an open payment option, Capital Metro (Austin, Texas) installed INIT s proximity readers onboard their new BRT vehicles to validate 2-D mobile tickets in real-time, and TriMet (Portland, Oregon) chose INIT for a combined mobile ticketing and smart card e-fare system implementation across both bus and rail. INIT's fare management solutions have provided customers with a diversity of proven e-fare technologies over the last 25 years. The once viewed CAD/AVL-only provider has an impressive track record in fare management projects worldwide; proving that our experience can make an astounding difference for you. 9 Product spotlight: MOBILEvario e-fare management and clearing system One of the most important aspects of an e-fare system is the ability to efficiently process clearing and revenue tasks on the back end. This is especially true if there is a shared revenue structure with multiple agencies. MOBILEvario is the most modern processing software of its kind. Because of its integrated architecture, individual agency requirements can be specifically tailored to fit the needs of any transportation system. The modular structure allows for expansion and extension by the customer at any time. MOBILEvario Customer-friendly MOBILEvario eliminates the need for extensive accounting processes and costs associated with fare collection. Using quick statistical overviews, agencies can centrally manage products, sales devices and users reducing the time spent in data processing. Operational information, like sales data, fare structures and parameters, can be automatically transmitted between sales units and the central software by WLAN or public mobile radio.
