1 - sac Switches Reciprocating Operating Mechanism NSTRUCTONS - ~~~ - For nstallation NTRODUCTON CAUTON: The equipment covered by this publication must be selected for a specific application and it must be installed, operated, and maintained by qualified persons who are thoroughly trained and who understand any hazards that may be involved. This publication is written only for such qualified persons and is not intended to be a substitute for adequate training and experience in safety procedures for this type of equipment. Operating Considerations Since, in most applications, these interrupter switches are capable of switching rated continuous load currents at full voltage, no interlocking with secondary protective equipment is required. Because circuit making and breaking is involved in the normal operation of these interrupter switches, precautionary partway opening or closing is undesirable. Just swing the operating handle through its full stroke without hesitation. Do not assume that the operating handle position necessarily indicates the open or closed position of the interrupter-switch blades. Upon completion of an opening or closing operation, visually check the position of the interrupter-switch blades to determine that the intended position has been attained. Then tag and padlock the operating handle in accordance with standard system operating procedures. n all cases, make certain that the operating handle is locked before walking away. Note: These interrupter switches are not intended for breaking fault currents. The Erection Drawing ncluded with this instruction sheet is a detailed erection drawing for the applicable mounting configuration. f a Standard Mounting Arrangement is to be used, this erection drawing is a printed sheet. This same sheet is also furnished when a Standard Minor Modification of a Standard Mounting Arrangement is to be used. n the latter case, a copy of RD-1330 (Standard Minor Modifications, Reciprocating Operating Mechanisms) is included. (For Special Mounting Arrangements, a custom erection drawing is provided.) Drawings for Standard Mounting Arrangements show only minimum or suggested locating dimensions for the vertical operating-pipe rod guides, the bell crank, and the operating handle. Specific locations are to be determined either on the job or by the user s engineering department. nspection Study the erection drawing carefully, and check the bill of material to be sure all parts are at hand. Standard Minor Modification parts are shown in the bill of material under the suffur specified: -Sl, -S2, -S3, -S4, S6, -s8, or -s9. When a Standard Mounting Arrangement is specified, the shipment will include: 0 Three switch poles; 0 Operating-pipe sections for interphase, horizontal connecting, and vertical sections;* Operating-mechanism components, such as rod guides, bell-crank assembly, operating handle assembly, etc.-each tagged and keyed to the bill of material for ready identification. * Not furnished with switches ordered less operatmg pipe. 3 PERCNG SET SCREWS To assure the integrity of the operating mechanism, it is imperative that careful attention be given to the correct installation of the piercing set screws provided on all operating-pipe couplings. Before installing operating pipe in any coupling, make certain that the cutting tip of the piercing set screw does not protrude through the body of the coupling clamp. Tighten each piercing set screw as directed in the step-by-step instructions that follow, but in each case, only after the associated clamp bolts have been torqued to final tightness. Operating Pipe Preparation fhesired, operating pipes can be cut to length (if not precut at the factory) before proceeding to the job site. Cutting dimensions are shown on the erection drawing. One of the pipe sections furnished is threaded at one end to accommodate the operating handle assembly. Users supplying their own operating pipe should determine which section of operating pipe is to be the lowest and thread one end of it for installation of the operating handle. Provide sufficient thread to allow the pipe to extend approximately V inch below the handle coupling. Mounting to Wood When mounting the switch and its operating mechanism to a wood structure or wood pole, it is recommended that suitably sized square washers be placed under the nuts. The use of spring-type washers between the square washers and nuts is also recommended to compensate for wood shrinkage and thus maintain fastener tightness. Mounting the Switch Poles and Bell-Crank Assembly mportant: To minimize time-consuming final adjustments, make sure that the switch poles are maintained in their fully closed positions during installation of the interphase and vertical operatingpipe sections. (As an expedient, the switch blades can be tied to their jaw-contact members.) Step 1 Remove the switch poles from their crates and arrange them on the ground in the same order in which they will be mounted on the structure. Also, where applicable, arrange the bell-crank base(s) or bracket(s) in the same manner. Use reasonable care to protect the switch bearings from contamination by dirt, mud, oil, etc. f necessary, use blocks to keep the bearings clear of the ground. Step 2 Attach the bell-crank assembly to its base or bracket (pole-mounted arrangements only). Step 3 Attach pipe couplings to the operating lever of each switch pole in accordance with the item numbers specified on the erection drawing. Each switch-pole operating lever is furnished with one %-inch spacer, which is used if only one coupling is attached to the operating lever. f two couplings are required, the spacer can be discarded. Note that there is an adjustable pipe coupling for each interphase pipe section. Typically, these adjustable couplings are attached to the center switch pole (the tiered-upright switch mounting configuration is the exception). A universal pipe coupling, when specified on the erection drawing, is attached to the switch pole nearest the bell crank. Step 4 f a bell-crank assembly is mounted between switch poles, the bell crank will be connected to the interphase pipe by a drag-link pipe section and an offset coupling. Attach one end of the drag-link pipe section to the driven arm of the bell crank. Then attach the specified offset coupling to the other end of the drag-link pipe section. Step 5 mportant: Do not lift the switch poles by rigging on the < lzve. parts, nor subject these parts to undue stress from slings or fall lines. Misalignment of the contacts and the interrupters may result. Hoist the individual switch poles and bolt them into position on the pole or structure as shown on the erection drawing. The switch poles should be carefully aligned on the supporting structure, taking care to see that the surface NSTRUCTON SHEET S&C ELECTRC COMPANY. Chicago Page 3 of 10 S&C ELECTRC LTD. 4 S&C Switches NSTALLATON Reciprocating Operating Mechanism on which the bases are mounted is flat and true; otherwise, the bases may be twisted when they are bolted to the structure. Such twisting will throw the blades out of alignment, will place undue strain on the insulators, and will result in difficulties in operation. Use shims as required. Step 6 Mount the bell-crank assembly, including base or bracket, where applicable, in the position indicated on the erection drawing. With structure-mounted contigurations, the bell-crank assemblies are mounted directly on the structure. Step 7 t is important for optimum performance of the operating mechanism that, until installation is complete and ready for operational check (Step 1 l), each switch pole remain closed with its main contacts fully closed and its operating lever against the closed stop. nstall the interphase pipe sections to interconnect the switch poles. Check that, for each pipe coupling, the cutting tip of the piercing set screw does not protrude through the body of the pipe-coupling clamp. Tighten the clamp bolt to final tightness. Then tighten the associated piercing set screw, piercing the pipe, and continue turning until a firm resistance is felt. Now tighten the take-up screws of the adjustable pipe couplings to remove all play in the interconnecting linkage. Make sure, during this procedure, that the switchpole operating levers remain against their closed stops. Then tighten the locknut on each adjustable pipe-coupling take-up screw. step 8 t is important, during this step, that the bell crank be held in a 45-degree position, as shown in Figure 2 (right). The bell crank and bell-crank bearing have indexing ridges to facilitate this alignment. The bell-crank arms should be within 5 degrees of the 45-degree position for the most favorable mechanical advantage. Connect the bell crank to the switch poles using either of the following methods, as required by the mounting configuration: f the bell-crank assembly is mounted outboard of the switch poles, install a pipe section to interconnect the driven arm of the bell crank and the nearest switch pole. (f two bell cranks are used in a double-offset arrangement, install a connecting pipe between them.) r-l Cl : Connecting Pipe Section Mark on Bell Crank-indicates 45degree position with switch open or closed \ Adjustable Driving Arm-6% long when index grooves match / Vertical Pipe igure 2. 5 NSTALLATON 1 f the bell-crank assembly is mounted between switch poles, connect it to the interphase pipe with the offset coupling and drag-link pipe section which were attached to the bell crank in Step 4. When installing the above operating-pipe section(s), make certain that, for each coupling, the cutting tip of the piercing set screw does not protrude through the body of the pipe-coupling clamp. Tighten the clamp bolt to final tightness. Then tighten the associated piercing set screw, piercing the pipe, and continue turning until a firm resistance is felt. nstalling the Vertical Operating Pipe One of the pipe sections furnished is threaded at one end to accommodate the operating handle assembly. nstall this section of pipe last, with the threads at the lower end. When installing the vertical operating-pipe sections, it is advisable to start with the uppermost section and to completely make up each coupling as work progresses except as noted below. Before installing operating pipe in any coupling, make certain that the cutting tip of the piercing set screw does not protrude through the coupling clamp. Torque the clamp bolt to final tightness. Then tighten the piercing set screw, piercing the pipe, and continue turning until a firm resistance is felt. Note: Do not tighten the piercing set screw at the top of the lowest sectibn of vertical operating pipe until satisfactory operating-handle adjustment is attained. f only one vertical operating-pipe section is required, omit Steps 9 and 10. Step 9 Mount the rod guide(s) with the arm pointing upward as shown in Figure 3. When an adjustable rod guide is included (for the tiered-outboard switch mounting configuration only), it should be mounted nearest the switch. Step 10 nstall the upper section of operating pipe between the bell crank and the uppermost rod guide, with the rodguide arm pointing upward at a 45-degree angle. A positioning stud holds the rod-guide arm at 45 degrees. See Figure 3. f more than one rod guide is used, install vertical operating-pipe sections between the rod guides in the same manner. nstalling the Operating Handle* Step 11 Mount the operating handle as shown on the erection drawing. At the same time, use one of the operatinghandle mounting bolts to attach one end of the grounding strap (the end with the grounding connector attached) to the handle mounting plate. See Figure 4.t * f the shipment includes an S&C Switch Operator-Type AS-lo, as signified by the addition of Standard Minor Modification Suffix -S8 or -S9 to the erection drawing (ED) number, refer instead to S&C nstruction Sheet , entitled S&C Switch Operators-Type AS-O, nstructions for nstallation. 7 The grounding recommendations herein may differ from the standard operating and safety procedures of certain electric utility companies. Where a discrepancy exists, the operating procedures of the electric utility apply. Gaining Channel (used on round poles only) Figure 3. Rod-guide group. 6 S8C Alduti-RupteP Switches NSTALLATON Reciprocating Operating Mechanism nstall the lowest vertical operating-pipe section by threading one end of the pipe into the coupling on the operating handle. Approximately L/4 inch of thread should extend through the coupling. See Figure 4. Tighten the locknut. nsert the upper end of this pipe section in the lowest rod-guide coupling (or, if only one vertical pipe section is used, the bell-crank coupling) and, while holding the operating handle at a point approximately 20 degrees from the closed position, tighten the rod-guide (or bell-crank) clamp bolt. Do not tighten the associated piercing set screw at this time. Now remove the temporary 45-degree positioning stud from each rod guide (if applicable). Also, if applicable, remove the ties holding the switch poles closed. Then move the handle to the fully closed position. A definite resistance should be felt at the end of the stroke, indicating that all slack in the operating linkage has been taken up. f this is not the case, the above procedure should be repeated except that the operating handle should be moved more than 20 degrees in the opening direction before tightening the clamp bolt on the lowest rod-guide (or bell-crank) coupling. Conversely, if it is necessary to use considerable force to move the handle to the fully closed position or, if the operating handle does not swing 180 degrees to the fully open position, loosen the clamp bolt on the lowest rod-guide coupling and then retighten it with the operating handle at less than the 20-degree position. Step 12 Fasten the free end of the grounding strap to the lowest vertical operating-pipe section a few inches above the operating handle assembly with the U-bolt connector provided for this purpose. Then connect the lower end of the strap to a suitable earth ground, using the grounding connector provided at that end of the strap.? t The groundlng recommendations herein may differ from the standard operating and safety procedures of certain electric utility companies. Where a dlscrepancy exists, the operating procedures of the electric utility apply. Grounding Locknut, Vertical Grounding Connector (for earth ground connection-see text) - Figure 4. 7 Step 13 Recheck to be sure that all clamp bolts and piercing set screws have been torqued to final tightness. Locking the Operating Handle Step 14 With padlock: The operating handle assembly includes provisions for padlocking the interrupter switch in either the open or closed position. With key interlock: A Superior Key nterlock (or equivalent), if supplied with the interrupter switch, will be mounted on the operating handle (see Figure 5). One of the two slots in the operating handle will be blocked to provide either a locked-open or locked-closed arrangement. f the interrupter switch is supplied with provision for the addition of a key interlock, the operating handle will have an interlock-mounting plate attached to the base. nstall interlock as follows. (a) Attach interlock to mounting plate so that interlock bolt, when extended, will engage a slot in the: operating handle. A Superior (Type B4003-1) Key nterlock with zero bolt projection and %-inch bolt travel is required. (b) Block one of the two slots in the operating handle with the blocking screw provided. The slot to be blocked will be determined by whether a locked-open or locked-closed arrangement is required. Note: Key interlocks are intended for proper sequencing of switching operations; they are not intended to provide security. The operating handle assembly includes provisions for padlocking the interrupter switch in either the open or closed position. Checking Operation Step 15 With the operating handle adjusted for full 180-degree travel as described in Step 11, open and close the interrupter switch by swinging the handle slowly through its full travel. Check to be sure that the following conditions exist: With the operating handle as far as it will go in the closing direction, all main contacts of the interrupter switch are fully closed. f none of the three switch poles are fully closed, increase the effective length of the vertical operating pipe as follows. Loosen the vertical-pipe clamping bolt at the lowest rod-guide (or bell-crank) coupling. Move the handle approximately 20 degrees from the closed position and retighten the clamp. Then move the operating handle to the fully closed position and recheck for adherence to the conditions described above. Recheck at this point to make sure that the rod-guide temporary positioning studs were removed, as directed in Step 11. f only one or two switch poles are fully closed (unlikely if care was used during Step 7), it is necessary to readjust the take-up screw(s) on the adjustable pipe couplings at the center switch pole to increase or decrease the effective length of the interphase operating pipe(s). 0 With the operating handle as far as it will go in the opening direction, the switch blades are 90' from the closed position. n the (unlikely) event that the conditions described in the preceding paragraph are not met, more switchblade travel is required: Move the operating handle NSTRUCTON SHEET S&C ELECTRC COMPANY. 8 s&c Switches 1 NSTALLATON Reciprocating Operating Mechanism to its mid-position to take the strain off the operatingpipe linkage and loosen the two bolts that clamp the driving arm of the adjustable bell crank.* Shorten the driving arm one step (% inch) and retighten the bolts. (Shortening the arm increases the amount of switch travel.) Then readjust for full operating-handle and switch-blade travel as described in Step 11. Repeat this procedure, shortening the driving arm in one-step increments, until full switch-blade travel is attained. Be sure to retighten the clamping bolts on the adjustable arm of the bell crank after adjustment is completed. Whether the interrupter switch is open or closed, the bell-crank arm(s) should be within 5 degrees of the 45-degree position for the most favorable mechanical advantage (see Figure 2 and Step 8). When satisfactory travel adjustment of handle and switch is attained, make sure that the clamp bolt on the pipe coupling at the rod guide (or bell-crank arm) immediately above the handle has been torqued to final tightness. Then tighten the associated piercing set screw, piercing the pipe, and continue turning until a firm resistance is felt. Step 16 Open and close the switch slowly several times and check the operation of each pole. The following conditions must be met: 0 The interrupter must lie in a plane parallel to the sweep of the blades, and the blades must passover the interrupter with approximately equal clearance on both sides as shown in Figure 6. * For the tiered-outboard switch mountmg configuration, no bell crank is used. n that case, swltch-travel ad~ustment may be accomplished at the adjustable (upper) rod guide. (Lengthenzng the dnven arm ncreases the amount of switch travel.) Then readjust for full operatmg-handle and swltch-blade travel as described in Step 11. 9 NSTALLATON 1 As the blade moves in the closing direction, clearance between the blade opening cam and the interrupter opening lever must be within the limit shown in Figure 6, View A-A. n the fully closed position, clearance between the blade closing cam and the interrupter closing lever must be within the limit shown in Figure 6. Also, the clearance between the blade shunt contact and the interrupter housing must be as shown in Figure 6. As the blade moves in the opening direction, the blade shunt contact must firmly engage the interrupter housing before the blade disengages from the jaw contact. (The shunt contact may be bent as required to conform to these conditions.) f adjustment is required, loosen the bolts that fasten the interrupter to the jaw-contact casting and reposition the interrupter. t may be necessary, as well, to loosen the bolts that fasten the jaw-contact casting to its mounting bracket and slightly rotate the casting in order to achieve the necessary clearances. Retighten the bolts, making sure that the blade engages the stationary contact on-center. f any of the conditions described in this step cannot be achieved, contact the nearest S&C Sales Office since it is likely that damage was sustained during shipping. Connecting High-Voltage Conductors When high-voltage conductors are to be connected using aluminum-alloy body connectors the following procedures should be employed: A. Thoroughly wire-brush the current-transfer surfaces of each connector and immediately apply a liberal coating of Penetrox A (available from Burndy Corporation) to the brushed surfaces. B. Wire-brush each terminal pad of the interrupter switch and apply a coating of Penetrox A. Then bolt the connectors to the terminal pads. C. Prepare the conductors using established procedures and clamp them in their respective connectors. 6 Mass anode type connectors, such as the Catalog Number 5300 series offered by S&C, which have been deslgnated by the connector manufacturer as being suitable for direct attachment to copper-bearing alloy termmal pads.
