A healthcare MBA at UEL UEL is one of the UK s fastest-growing universities and plays an integral role in local, regional and international development. We empower individuals, communities and businesses through diversity, partnership and excellence in teaching and research. The Royal Docks Business School reflects the University s innovative, forward-thinking approach to education and learning. Over 3,000 students benefit from our comprehensive suite of business programmes and services, championed by leading academics committed to undertaking high-quality research that underpins our teaching. Why study for a healthcare MBA? Healthcare is a critical topic of discussion today, not only in the United Kingdom, but throughout the world. At no other time in the history of the sector has it been more important for us to have healthcare leaders with an understanding of management issues. At UEL, we embrace this challenge with an integrated approach to learning that fosters teamwork, communication skills and leadership development alongside efficient, cost-effective use of resources. Our programme is highly interactive and offers you the opportunity not only to learn from case studies from the healthcare industry, but to learn from each other. You will engage with professionals from our Business School, as well as our internationally known School of Health, Sport and Bioscience (HSB). We make sure that our students not only know how to solve the numerous challenges that confront them in a medical setting, but feel confident identifying and solving problems when they emerge. This type of forward thinking makes our programme cutting edge. 8 9

Our MBA Healthcare Management programme Our programme is an integrated design to progress your career through an efficient blend of academic excellence and practical skills. Our MBA Healthcare Management structure Our MBA Healthcare Managament programme involves the study of three core subjects along with specialist training in healthcare design, operation and effectiveness. Honorary profile Martin P Slark MBA, University of East London MBA Healthcare Management Core subjects: International Marketing and Operations Management The main aim of this module is to focus on the development of market-driven strategies in both product and service delivery in profit and non-profit-making organisations. The module will lay the foundations of core marketing and operations concepts/principles and analytical methods. It will develop the themes of how added value and customer satisfaction are driven by the marketing environment and are delivered through integrated operations. International Issues in Accounting and Managerial Finance This module aims to provide a broad introduction to financial accounting, management accounting and finance to assist decision making, including the role of theory. Specifically, the module aims to develop a critical awareness of crucial relevant issues at an international level and their implications for business organisations, and the major issues in financial reporting by multinational corporations. Martin is a UEL graduate and is currently Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of Molex Inc, where previously he was Director, Executive Vice-President, President and Chief Operating Officer. Whilst working as President of Molex s Far East Region, he began an MBA by flexible distance learning at UEL, graduating in UEL was offering a flexible, part-time MBA programme, which was very attractive to me because my job requires constant travelling. The coursework, while demanding, seemed to offer what I wanted and fitted my schedule, with most of the courses being held in the evening and on weekends. I believe studying for the MBA broadened my outlook and enabled me to sharpen my analytical skills. I also learned a lot about aspects of business that, as a trained engineer, I had not been so involved in, such as organisational management and marketing. It is interesting to learn from, and share experiences with, people in other fields of business; I learned a great deal from teachers and fellow students and 14 years later many of them are still my friends. In 2005, Martin came back to UEL to receive an honorary Doctorate of Business Administration (honoris causa). He regularly visits the UK and attends functions with the Vice-Chancellor of UEL and our other university friends. Molex sponsors a prize for best student on our MBA programmes. The prize is awarded biannually and is open both to part-time and full-time students. International Human Resource Management and Project Management The main aim of this module is to enable you to develop the competencies needed to exercise leadership in the management of human resources in global organisations, either as a general manager or human resource professional, or to function as an advisor or researcher in the field. The module will also evaluate and apply the methodological factors that can be used for selecting, defining, planning, controlling, monitoring and delivering projects. Healthcare Organisations Design, Operation and Improvement I believe studying for the MBA broadened my outlook, and enabled me to sharpen my analytical skills. I also learned a lot about aspects of business that, as a trained engineer, I had not been so involved in, such as organisational management and marketing. Core specialisation project You choose two options out of: Business Simulation in Healthcare Management Healthcare Management Dissertation Healthcare Management Internship

Academic profile Dr Osman Khan MBA Marketing PhD Marketing, University of Bradford Dr Osman Khan is Director of MBA programmes and teaches on the MBA Leadership specialism. He has over a decade of experience of working in consultancy and training to enable companies to improve their business performance. He specialises in customer experience management (CEM), customer loyalty and satisfaction, emotional attachment, B2B marketing, social media, strategic marketing and tourism marketing. Osman s past experience includes working as a marketing director at a high-tech IT firm, consulting for multinational mobile operators in Europe and the Middle East, and helping firms within the UK to improve customer loyalty, increase sales and reassess strategic marketing goals. Osman is also the chair of the judging panel for the UK Theme Park and Visitor Attraction Awards and a visiting research fellow at the Henley Centre for Customer Management at the Henley Business School. Spotlight Module: Healthcare Organisations: Design, Operation, and Improvement This healthcare module is taught in the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience an exciting, friendly and innovative learning environment which offers a wide range of scientific, medical, health and sports programmes. The School is home to the Institute for Health and Human Development (IHHD), which brings together expertise across the University to carry out research on health and wellbeing and their social, economic and cultural determinants. The complexity of modern healthcare, arising from constant innovation, has been described as being an order of magnitude greater than other industries. Currently, healthcare service users increasingly demand a personalised, higher-quality healthcare experience, whilst the threat of public sector austerity increases the pressure on providers to deliver it. This module equips you with analytical insight into the effective design, operational management and improvement of healthcare service delivery systems. You will examine the different approaches of market segmentation and their use in the planning and delivery of health services, and appraise issues in healthcare delivery from service quality and service recovery perspectives. The module is taught in a range of learning scenarios, including lectures, seminars, workshops, group discussions, role plays, simulations, case studies, video analysis and feedback, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. The UEL MBA provides you with great networking opportunities with some of the best companies around the world. Dr Osman Khan PhD, University of Bradford Modern healthcare providers are becoming knowledge-driven learning organisations. The performance of the workers and managers in them is determined by intelligent experimentation, ingenuity, interpersonal skills and resilience in the face of adversity. Edmondson,

I gained a lot from the cultural diversity of my peer group on the MBA especially when it came to approaches to business situations and problem solving. The technical and directional assistance I received with my dissertation on new media was invaluable, which has benefited my career. Whitney Nožiská, USA New Media Consultant/Career Advisor An international learning experience With over 120 nationalities represented within our learning community, UEL is one of the most diverse universities in the world. A multitude of student experience from across the globe enriches class discussions and provides an authentic international dimension to our MBA programmes. Embracing diversity for a world of understanding in healthcare Healthcare is a universal need and concern in the world today. What makes studying at RDBS and HSB particularly special is the diversity of our students; at UEL, you will engage with peers from various cultural backgrounds and experiences. It is this synergy in the classroom that truly makes the UEL experience transformational. Many of our students come from India, China, Nigeria, Germany, the USA and Latin America and have held significant positions of responsibility in healthcare or healthcare-related industries. They come from both private and public sector healthcare organisations in countries with very different healthcare policies and practices. This interaction and learning from others makes the programme a success. Although our programme is designed for individual entrants, we welcome the opportunity for a group of health professionals from the same organisation to enrol together to be able to take the classroom synergy they will experience back to their workplace

Our flexible approach to design and delivery enables us to design and deliver our programmes in a way and location that is comfortable for our clients; this flexibility is enhanced by our close links to other UEL Schools such as HSB and our global academic partners. Nowhere is this truer than with our Healthcare Blended e-learning Series. This series is based on the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification in Process Improvement. Six Sigma is a powerful management system that helps companies increase profits by eliminating variability, defects and waste. This Healthcare Blended e-learning Series allows healthcare professionals the opportunity to improve their management skills while still having the flexibility to meet the demands of the fast paced healthcare sector. The programme involves e-learning through our partnership with The Quality Group that assists us in providing an online learning platform in the Healthcare Green Belt Six Sigma programme, alongside classroom interaction with UEL expert healthcare academic staff. Recent research confirms that adult learners learn best through engagement and real-world experiences. Consequently, we do not do anything in our classroom in this programme that cannot be done online. Your time is valuable and we want to make sure you get maximum exposure to interacting and engaging experts in the field as well as your fellow classmates. These face-to-face classes are used to make the online material come alive in a transformational way that will ensure good practices for a lifetime of learning. This programme is designed to give you total flexibility in terms of speed and location. You will start your programme with a virtual class event to introduce you to the course material in preparation for your face-toface classes. These classroom experiences are offered at weekends and evenings to offer flexibility and you are able to make up for missed classes at a later date. Our focus is on assisting you to take what you learn and turn it into best practice. Students enrolled on our MBA programme are welcome to do the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification alongside their programme
