3 NetVault: Backup 3 APM for Exchange Server Recovery Manager Integration Guide INTEGRATING RECOVERY MANAGER FOR EXCHANGE WITH NVBU APM FOR EXCHANGE SERVER Recovery Manager for Exchange An Overview System Requirements and Prerequisites Important Considerations Recovering Exchange Server Data Using the Data Stream Method Using the Restore-to-Files Method Recovery Manager for Exchange An Overview Recovery Manager for Exchange works with the NetVault: Backup (NVBU) APM for Exchange Server (Exchange Server APM) to support recovery of mailboxes and mailbox items System Requirements and Prerequisites For details on Recovery Manager requirements, refer to the information available on the Sys Reqs and Docs tabs at: Additional requirements for using the Recovery Manager with the Exchange Server APM include: You must install an NVBU Client on the Recovery Manager server. You must add the Recovery Manager server as an NVBU Client to the NVBU Server. You must install the Exchange Server APM on the Recovery Manager server. You must install an Exchange Server APM license on the destination server for the restore (the license edition must match the edition used for the Exchange Server that you backed up). If you use the data-stream method, the destination server is the Recovery Manager server. If you use the restoreto-file method, the destination server is the server to which the Exchange Server files are restored.

4 4 Integrating Recovery Manager for Exchange with NVBU APM for Exchange Server Important Considerations Before using Recovery Manager with NVBU and the Exchange Server APM, be aware of the following: If the log files are not renamed or an incorrect location is entered during recovery, thus preventing the Recovery Manager wizard from finding the files, you must close and reopen the Recovery Manager before it can locate them. If you open a Data Store, Recovery Manager rolls forward the logs in the read/write share. You will not be able to roll them forward again from that share Recovering Exchange Server Data The version of Exchange Server that you are using determines the available methods of recovery. Exchange 2000, 2003, and 2007 There are two methods available: Data stream If you used the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) method to back up data, you can recover the saveset as a data stream directly from NVBU to the Recovery Manager server. Restore to files If you used the ESE or Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) method to back up data, you can recover the saveset as a set of files from NVBU to a file system location either on the Recovery Manager server or another non-exchange Server. Exchange 2010 You must use the restore-to-files method. This method also works with Database Availability Group (DAG) configurations Using the Data Stream Method Figure 1-1: Source Storages container selected Using this method lets you the recover a saveset from an Exchange Server by streaming the data set to the Recovery Manager server. To do this, perform the following steps: 1. Open the Recovery Manager interface, right-click the Source Storages container, and select Add Storages. The Add Storage Wizard appears.

On the Select How to Add Storages, select the first option, Access Exchange backups with third-party software. 3. From the corresponding list, select BakBone NetVault 8.0, 8.1, or 8.2, and click Next. Important: You can select the BakBone NetVault 8.5 option after the release of Recovery Manager for Exchange v5.0 (this version was not available when this document was published). Until Recovery Manager for Exchange v5.0 is available, you must select the BakBone NetVault 8.0, 8.1, or 8.2 option. Figure 1-3: Specify Exchange Server Version 4. On the Specify Exchange Server Version, select the Exchange Server 2000, 2003, or 2007 option, and click Next.

On the Specify Backed Up Exchange Server, select the Exchange Server that corresponds to the data that you are recovering, and click Next. The list of servers is automatically populated with a list of the available Exchange Servers. Figure 1-5: Specify Exchange Server Emulation Options 6. On the Specify Exchange Server Emulation Options, specify the storage group (or groups) that you want to recover, delete any listed storage groups that you do not want to recovery (by default, the list contains the storage groups that were previously recovered), and click Next. When specifying the storage groups, make sure that the names match the names used on the Exchange Server, and be aware that the names are casesensitive.

7 NetVault: Backup 7 APM for Exchange Server Recovery Manager Integration Guide 7. On the Specify Database Location, enter a path to indicate where to restore the Exchange Server storage groups to. Note: Make sure that the restore path has sufficient space to hold the storage groups that you are recovering. Figure 1-6: Specify Database Location Figure 1-7: Emulating Exchange Server - waiting 8. To begin recovery, click Next. Recovery Manager goes into a waiting state as an emulated Exchange Server. At this point you can initiate a restore job from NVBU that targets the Recovery Manager server NVBU Client.

From the NVBU Console of the NVBU installation used to protect the Exchange Server, launch the NVBU Restore window, and select the Exchange Server saveset for recovery. You can select a server, storage group, or database.

Note: If this is the last restore sequence, select the Perform Recovery check box. As stated earlier, an NVBU Client and the Exchange Server APM must be installed on the Recovery Manager server. 13.Submit the restore job. Note: When restoring a saveset to Recovery Manager, the restore job always includes a warning message after completion. You can ignore this warning. For multi-channel restores, a Cannot close restore error message always appears in the NVBU binary log. You can ignore this message. Figure 1-12: Emulating Exchange Server - connected After you select the applicable server, the Emulating Exchange Server on the Recovery Manager server changes to a connected status as it receives data from the NVBU Server, intercepts it, and writes the files in the recovery area specified in Step 7.

11 NetVault: Backup 11 APM for Exchange Server Recovery Manager Integration Guide The screens that appear next depend on how many tasks must be completed as part of the restore process: If this was not the last restore sequence so you did not select the Perform Recovery check box in Step 10, a Last backup set restored check box appears during the completion of each restore task. When the final restore task is the last backup required for a complete restore, select the Last backup set restored check box to start the replay of logs and registration of the database by Recovery Manager. If this was the last restore sequence and you selected the Perform Recovery check box in Step 10, Recovery Manager replays the logs and registers the database in the Recovery Manager interface after the data has been restored. Note: If you selected multiple storage groups for recovery, recovery will not begin until all selected storage groups have been restored. Note: The data source shows the path to the recovered data with this method. Figure 1-15: Source Storages container Using the Restore-to-Files Method This method is similar to the data-stream method, except that Recovery Manager is not used as an emulated Exchange Server. Using this method with the Exchange Server APM lets you restore saveset data to a non-exchange Server. You can use this method with Exchange 2003, 2007, and 2010 (including DAGs). Note: As with using the data-stream method, make sure that the destination of the restore (the Recovery Manager server or other non-exchange Server) has sufficient space to hold the storage groups that you are recovering.

To do this, perform the following steps: 1. From the NVBU Console of the NVBU installation used to protect the Exchange Server, launch the NVBU Restore window, and select the Exchange Server saveset for recovery. 2. On the Restore Options tab, select Copy Files to Target Directory Only option, enter a path in the Target Directory box, and then select any other applicable options. Note: Make sure that the Target Directory exist on the client where the data is destined to go to. Figure 1-17: Restore Options tab

On the Target Client tab, select your target client (the Recovery Manager server or another non-exchange Server). Note: Make sure that the selected client has an NVBU Client and the Exchange Server APM installed. Figure 1-19: Target Client tab Figure 1-20: Example of restored data 5. Submit the restore job. The data is restored to the folder specified in Step 2 on the client specified in Step 4. Note: The directory structure is created by the NVBU restore process within the specified recovery location.

Open the Recovery Manager interface, right-click the Source Storages container, and select Add Storages. Figure 1-22: Select How to Add Storages The Add Storage Wizard appears. 7. On the Select How to Add Storages, select the Access offline Exchange database, Domino databases, or.pst files option, and click Next. Figure 1-23: Select What to Register 8. On the Select What to Register, select the Exchange Server database option, and click Next.

On the Specify Offline.Edb File, use the Browse button to point to the location of the restored files and select the.edb file for the database, and click Next. Figure 1-25: Specify.Stm File 10.If you are using Exchange 2000 or 2003, on the Specify.Stm File, use the Browse button to point to the location of the restored files, select the.stm file for the database (if the program does not automatically select it), and click Next.

Recovery Manager automatically sets the log-file location to the same as the.edb file and.stm file. Figure 1-27: Select a Restore Point Recovery Manager opens the database and log files. 12.When the Select a Restore Point appears, click Next to accept the automatic setting and continue. The recovery point displayed by the wizard shows the date and time when the Exchange Server was originally backed up.

The applicable s and status are displayed as the logs are replayed and the storage is registered.
