1 Scholarships for Study Abroad National Security Education Program David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship -- Administered by Institute for International Education (IIE) for study in critical world areas in Africa, Asia, Eastern and Central Europe, Latin and South America and the Middle East. (Countries not eligible: Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.) Campus representative: Carol Moline. Campus Deadline: Early January. This is a highly competitive scholarship and if you are interested you should talk with Carol Moline to see if you meet the criteria to make it worth your time to complete the application. Check website for updated information. **Agriculture and food science, business, computer science, economics, engineering, health and biomedical science, history, international relations, political science, and applied science majors are especially encouraged to apply. ** IIE Study Abroad Grants Grants of $1,000 to undergraduate students at Midwest Colleges. No restrictions regarding destination; however, the applicant must provide documentation that he/she has been accepted to a study abroad program for which credit will be given by home institution and that they are a permanent resident of the area served by the Midwest Regional Center of IIE. Applicants must not have already participated in more than four weeks of study abroad experience at the University level. Applications to study in non-western countries encouraged. Funding for the academic year was cancelled but may be available for Check the website periodically. Information: Bowman Travel Grants Awarded in amounts of $500 or $1,000 to high school and undergraduate students participating in study, work, and volunteer programs in developing countries (Africa, Asia, Latin America.) Gustavus can nominate three students. Gustavus campus representative: Carol Moline Campus Deadline: March 15 for programs beginning between June 1 and December 31; and October 15 for programs beginning between January 1 and July 31 of the following year. Gilman Scholarships An award of up to $5,000 for study abroad opportunities for undergraduate students with financial need, sponsored by the US Department of State and Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Students underrepresented in study abroad are also encouraged to apply. Deadlines: April 4 for submission of the online application for fall programs and September 26 for submission of the online application for spring programs. Peace Education Scholarships (Mardag) -- Gustavus Peace Education program offers scholarships for study abroad opportunities each year. Application deadline is March 15, The amount of each award will range from $250 to $1000, depending on the number of applicants and the resources available to the Peace Education Program. For more information, please contact Mimi Gerstbauer at x7421 or mgerstba@gac.edu Ruth Youngdahl Nelson Scholarship Awarded to a student who proposes a study project focusing on becoming actively involved in peace making in some experiential way. Additional Scholarships Awarded to students planning independent study projects that focus on peace and justice issues or enrolled in off campus courses concerned with these issues. Gustavus campus representative: Mimi Gerstbauer x7421 Rotary Club Scholarships A variety of scholarships countries and timeframes. Applicants must have at least two years of university or college work experience and be a citizen of a country that has a Rotary club. Deadlines vary depending on Rotary district, so contact the Rotary Club in your hometown. Deadlines may be as early as March. Information:

2 American Scandinavian Foundation -- Awards for study in Scandinavia in all fields for short term as well as full academic year programs. Information: Lilly Lorénzen Scholarship An award of $1,500 in conjunction with the American Swedish Institute to the person best qualified who plans to study in Sweden during the coming school year. The applicant must be a Minnesota resident and have knowledge of Swedish. Application due May 1. Current information comes out in March. Information: Malmberg Scholarship and Fellowship Program The American Swedish Institute is pleased to announce a major new education program, the Malmberg and Fellowship Program. An Applicant must be a U. S. resident who is enrolled in a degree-granting program at an accredited college or university and be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the Swedish language. Scholarships are granted for up to a full academic term. Studies which pertain to Swedish America and/or the relationship between Sweden and the United States are favored. The scholarship available is up to $10,000. Ginger Froyen Haddorff Scholarship An award of $500 for Gustavus students with a 2.75 GPA or higher who will study abroad for a semester, summer or year. Applicants must have at least sophomore status and selection is based on both merit and need. Deadline: April 30. Information and applications: Carol Moline, Office of International Education. Gamelin Endowment Fund for China Studies Established by the Gamelin family to honor the experiences abroad and the interest in international relations of life-long Gustavus supporters Francis C. Gamelin ( 38) and Ruth Vickner ( 37), this endowment will enable future Gustavians to understand the growing importance of China on the world stage. Information: Office of International Education Mondale Scholarship The Japan American Society of Minnesota award to Minnesota undergraduate students attending a Minnesota college or university planning to study in Japan. Information and applications: Click of the Mondale Dinner link. Japan Information Center Awarded by the Japanese government for students studying for six months to one year in Japan under the student exchange agreement. Contact your Japanese university for the varying deadlines or consult for more information. Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan- The Association of Teachers of The Japanese Bridging Project offers awards of $2,500 for semester programs and $4,000 for year programs to American students participating in study abroad programs in Japan. Applicants must be US citizens, enrolled as undergraduates at a US college or university, and need not have studied Japanese language. All majors are encouraged to apply. Deadline: April 5, 2006, for Fall 2006 programs. Information: Morgan Stanley Scholarships Through the Bridging Project, Morgan Stanley Japan is awarding two $7,500 scholarships to US students who will be studying in Japan for the academic year. Applicants should be juniors or seniors with and interest in economics and international finance. Also includes possibilities of one-month internships with Morgan Stanley Japan s Tokyo headquarters. Deadline: April 5, 2006, for Fall 2006 programs. Information and applications:

3 Freeman ASIA Need-based awards of up to $7,000 are available for students participating in undergraduate study abroad programs in the following countries: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Deadlines: March 15, 2006, for Summer 2006 programs ($3,000); April 7 for Fall 2006 ($5,000) and academic year programs ($7,000). Information: Twin Cities Journalist Fund Awards up to $4,000 to a study abroad student planning a career in public affairs or journalism. The applicant must be enrolled in a MN college or university and have completed at least their first year. For further information, visit Minnesota Newspaper Foundation link: Study Abroad Programs which offer scholarships, travel grants, or financial aid American Councils for International Education (ACTR ACCELS) Undergraduates who intend to teach are eligible for full or partial scholarships through American Councils from the U. S. Department of Education (Fulbright-Hays) grant support for their participation in the Russian Language and Area Studies Program or the Eurasian Regional Language Program. Deadlines: March 1 for summer programs; April 1 for fall semester and academic year programs; October 15 for spring semester programs. Information: Center for Global Education (CGE) Scholarships are available for students underrepresented in study abroad. Applicants must submit a completed scholarship application, including documentation of current funding. Deadlines for spring programs are November 1 and May 1 for the fall programs. Information: Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) There are various awards available for CIEE programs. Campus deadlines: October 1 for spring programs and March 1 for fall programs. Information: CIEE International Study Programs (CIEE-ISP) Scholarships These scholarships are available to CIEE Study Center applicants from Academic Consortium (AC) member institutions. Awards, applied to program fees, are usually made in amounts of $500 or $1,000 increments. Robert B. Bailey III Minority Student Scholarships Awards of $500 for students traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, especially ethnic minority students. Campus Deadlines: October 1 for spring programs, March 1 for fall programs Jennifer Ritzmann Scholarship Available to students applying to the Council s program in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Department of Education Scholarship for Programs in China - Available to students participating in Council Study Center Programs at Nanjing University, Peking University, East China Normal University in Shanghai, and National Chengchi University in Taipei. Grant applicants must have completed a minimum of their sophomore year to qualify. College Year in Athens Opportunities for supplemental scholarship aid. Application attached to the initial College Year in Athens application. Look for individual semester information: Denmark International Studies (DIS) Awarded to students who otherwise could not afford to study in Denmark. DIS scholarships cannot be used to offset and kind of financial aid at your home school. Four

4 forms of scholarships are offered, all awarded on the basis of financial need. Information and application: International Education for Students (IES) Various awards available to students planning on attending IES programs. All programs qualify; scholarships are merit and need based. Deadlines are May 1 for fall programs and November 1 for spring programs. Information: IES Berlin Minority Student Scholarship Three scholarships of $9,700 to assist with program fee for the IES Berlin program. Deadlines: December 1 for spring programs and May 1 for fall programs. Information: This scholarship will be unavailable after the Fall 2006 semester. Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA) Annual awards ranging from $500-$3,500 for students applying to any ISA programs. Additional memorial awards available for students studying in Ireland, Australia and Birkbeck, University of London, along with various other designated scholarships and travel grants. Consult the website for deadlines. Information: Kansai Gaidai Scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $4,000. The Short-Term Student Exchange Promotion Program (Inbound) Scholarship deadline is much earlier than the admission deadline. It is highly advisable to contact Carol Moline in the Office of International Education for necessary information and documents. Information: Lancaster University Awards for minority students and students with disabilities. Information: School for International Training (SIT) Various worldwide scholarships and awards to students ranging from $500-$4,000 and made on consideration of both merit and need. Deadlines for spring semester are October 15, and May 1 for fall semester. Information: SIT Asia Fund Award for undergraduate students interested in Asian studies, based on academic performance, curricular interest, ability to carry out independent field study and need. The Freeman Foundation funds apply to SIT semesters in China, Vietnam, or Mongolia. Information: Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) Scholarships available to undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or as part of an individual student-designed study abroad semester or year. Applicants must have at least sophomore standing by the beginning of scholarship period, are expected to demonstrate interest in contemporary German and European affairs and explain the significance of their project in Germany to their future studies or goals. Information and applications: Student Project for Amity among Nations (SPAN) Scholarship and loan packages to every qualified student planning a SPAN abroad experience, along with scholarships designated for students traveling to particular countries or regions. Information: umabroad.umn.edu/financial/index.html Nobel Museum Summer Program A two-week program in Sweden for science majors. Applicants must
