1 PHD PROGRAMME IN THEOLOGY AND IN STUDIES IN CHRISTIAN CULTURE INSTITUTE OF THEOLOGY OF THE EELC The Academic degree being awarded to the Doctoral students completing their doctoral studies is either PhD in Theology (required qualification: master s degree in theology resp. an academic degree corresponding to MA in theology) or PhD in Studies in Christian Culture (required qualification: master s degree in humanities or an academic degree corresponding to MA level) Doctoral studies consist of 240 ECTS and last for 4 years, 0 ECTS of which are to be acquired by taking several courses. The doctoral thesis itself values 180 ECTS. As the doctoral studies programme takes place in cooperation with the University of Tartu, there are some courses that can be taken from there as well. MODULE 1: Special subjects (9 ECTS) 1.1.General basic subjects (15 ECTS) 1.2. Common Doctoral Seminar in Theology 1.. Individual Doctoral Seminar in Theology 1.4. Special Doctoral Seminar 1.5. Doctoral Seminar Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church - Called to Serve 1.4. Special Doctoral Seminar Religion and History 1.5. Special Doctoral Seminar Christianity and Culture MODULE 2: Elective courses (9 ECTS) 2.1. Elective Courses of the Institute of Theology of the EELC 2.2. Elective courses MODULE : Free subjects ( ECTS) MODULE 4: University teaching ( ECTS) MODULE 5: Doctoral thesis (180 ECTS) MODULE 1: Special subjects 9 ECTS Aim of the special subjects module is to improve and deepen methodological and special knowledge and skills. Module 1 is divided into 5 parts: 1.1.General basic subjects 15 ECTS Aim of the general basic subjects is to achieve knowledge in the field of scientific work, pedagogical work at the university and their ethical groundings as well as to gain an understanding about the origins and sources of Christianity. 2 UI/US/ST/4.01 UI/US/UT/4.01 Ethics and Methodology of Science (University of Tartu: subject code FLFI ) Antiquity and Origins of Christianity dimension of university teacher s work both in working with students and with colleagues. Course concentrates on four themes: university teacher as a teacher; university teacher as a supervisor; university teacher as a mentor; ethical aspects of teaching in university. Course handles the sources and origins of Christianity and analyzes how Christianity developed in Antiquity Common Doctoral Seminar in Theology UI/US/SEM/4.01 Common Doctoral seminar in theology (in cooperation with Faculty of Theology in University of Tartu) Seminar takes place in cooperation with the Faculty of Theology in the University of Tartu (subject Nr. USUS ). In this seminar the concepts of PhD thesis are being presented and discussed. The aim is to give the student a feedback about his/her PhD thesis. 1..Individual Doctoral Seminar in Theology UI/US/SEM/4.02 Individual Doctoral Seminar Course is carried out by the supervisor of PhD student in a field related to the topic of her/his thesis. Modules 1.4. and 1.5 for doctoral students in Theology: 1.4. Special Doctoral Seminar The Doctoral student must choose one of the following seminars that are thematically closest to her/his PhD thesis. The seminar takes place in cooperation with the Faculty of Theology in University of Tartu and its special seminars for Doctoral students. ECTS UI/US/VTUT/4.01 Seminar Biblical Studies UI/US/ST/4.02 Seminar Systematic Theology UI/US/KL/4.01 Seminar Church History or Comparative Religious Studies UI/US/TU/4.01 Seminar Practical Theology 1.5. Doctoral Seminar Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church - Called to Serve UI/US/SEM/4.0 Doctoral Seminar Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church- Called Aim is to give an overview over the history of EELC, of its contemporary situation and

3 to Serve challenges that the Church faces in the context of contemporary local and global social and religious developments. Modules 1.4. and 1.5 for doctoral students in Studies on Christian Culture: 1.4. Special Doctoral Seminar Religion and History UI/US/SEM/4. 0 Religion and History Aim of the seminar is to analyze the most important events in history that have influenced European cultural background and find out their religious background Special Doctoral Seminar Christianity and Culture UI/US/SEM/4. 04 Christianity and Culture Aim of the seminar is to analyze the influence of Christianity in different expressions of human culture especially in European cultural environment (with special emphasis on art, literature and music). MODULE 2: Elective courses 9 ECTS Aim of the module is to learn to know methods and ethical dimensions of scientific work in Estonian as well as in international context, to improve one s ability of academic selfexpression in written as well as in oral form. The subjects of this module can be chosen either from the Institute s or University of Tartu s list of elective courses. The list of elective courses may vary from year to year Elective Courses of the Institute of Theology EELC UI/US/VA/4.25 UI/US/VA/4.2 UI/US/VA/4.27 UI/US/VA/4.28 Religion and Church in Contemporary Estonia Formation of Religious Identity in Estonia Political and Socioethical Responsibility of Church in the Theology of 20th Century Poverty and Social Outcasts History of Diaconia in Estonia Profound analysis of historical processes that have influenced religious identity of Estonians. Students read and analyze several texts that help to understand these processes. Students learn to analyze the impulses that gave growth for social and political dimension in the Western theology during the 20 th century. Several relevant texts are read and analyzed during the course. The students participating in the course learn to know different models of Christian social practice. They gain an

4 UI/US/VA/4.29 History of Estonian Bible overview of theological sense and history of diaconal work in Estonia. The students learn to know different Bible translations into Estonian. Every student taking part in this seminar compiles a short seminar work where he/she describes some concrete questions/difficulties concerning the Estonian translation of the Bible Elective courses SOZU Academic Self- Expression The course consists of four parts: 1) the general principles of composing academic texts and writing scientific articles and conference presentations; 2) practical exercises in writing academic texts and preparing them for publication; ) publishing requirements and publication procedures of international and domestic academic journals, 4) composing and writing a conference presentation and presenting it to the class. FLFI Academic Writing Through lectures, interactive group work and practical exercises the students learn the principles of academic writing. The students learn to generate scientific texts. BGMR Science communication A special aspect of the course is that participants should acquire skills to organise, publish, review conference proposals, undertake leadership tasks and disseminate outcomes among the scientific community and the public for scientific conference, seminars, workshops, etc. ARTH.02.0 Bioethics The aim of the course is to understand and obtain main principles and regulations of modern bioethics and to get skills to solve ethical problems in biomedical research HTHT Learning and Teaching in Higher Education MTAT E-learning Technologies in Higher Education The aim of the course is to broaden the knowledge and skills of the future lecturers for teaching in higher education: the focus is on the ways how to plan, carry out and reflect upon their teaching. Aim of the course is to make students acquainted to the different possibilities

5 of E-Learning resp. learning via Internet such as finding learning materials via Internet, image processing, animations, music processing, video conferences and lectures, tests. Different methods of E- Learning are being handled as well as a learning process in combined learning, use of active learning in the E-Learning, the role of the tutors. FLEE Oral Presentation Skills acquired on completion of the course: An ability to draft and deliver various types of spoken academic texts (research paper, lecture, introduction) based on source texts or notes. An understanding of the basic characteristics of spoken academic language, knowledge of the required rhetorical devices and technical means. An awareness of the most important problems related to drafting and delivering various types of spoken academic text, an ability to solve these problems. MJJV.0.1 Management Three broad topics are integrated in the framework of this course; Management (sub themes: managerial job and leadership styles); Organizational Behavior (sub themes: individual, teamwork, design and change of an organization); and International Management (sub themes: international markets, the models of internalization and corporate governance). These areas enable to analyze how to manage and direct cooperation between organizations, its members and SOPL European Research and Higher Education Area environment. This course handles the scientific research in EC. Special interest is paid to the scientific policy of EC and it s developing as well as to several European documents constituting the scientific policy of the European Union. Different programmes and foundations that should give a contribution to the mobility politics in the EC are introduced to the students, such as European Science Foundation, principles of the Bologna process, programmes of Socrates/Erasmus etc.

6 MODULE : Free subjects ECTS Aim of the module is to deepen and widen the competence of the students. Free subjects are chosen according to the wider context of student s research topic. Free subjects are not defined by the university, but are chosen by the students. MODULE 4: University teaching ECTS The purpose of the practice is to obtain an experience of teaching at university under skilled supervision. Doctoral student prepares and instructs a ECTS lecture or seminar course. MODULE 5: Doctoral thesis 180 ECTS Aim is to apply methods and knowledge achieved with the help of former modules in independent research that leads to a doctoral thesis. Publishing of three scientific articles in internationally acknowledged journals.
