4 Welcome Welcome to the Aberdeen Asset Management 2015 Farr 40 National Championships: John Calvert-Jones Trophy Farr 40 Australia and Aberdeen Asset Management welcome all competitors and spectators to the Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 National Championships: John Calvert-Jones Trophy being sailed on Sydney Harbour. Farr 40 sailing is a contest between evenly matched 40-foot racing boats, helmed by their skilled and competitive amateur owners and guided by world-renowned tacticians. The Farr 40 Class complies with strict One Design rules, meaning the boat has been built to a specific design, and all competing boats in the class are not permitted to make amendments to the design. Any competitive advantage must be derived by the skill of the skipper and the crew. Unique to the Farr 40 Class is that the One Design rules are internationally governed and dictate an owner driver rule and impose limitations on the number of professional crew members. This year s National Championships: John Calvert-Jones Trophy will be hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Kirribilli, New South Wales. We look forward to a wonderful regatta on March 2015 and hope all our spectators enjoy watching the action on Sydney Harbour. 7 About Farr 40 One Design racing in Australia is widely celebrated through successful classes such as Etchells and Dinghy Olympic classes including the Lasers and 470s. The Farr 40 class follows similar principles in racing and complies with specific One Design rules; boats have been built to a specific design and competing boats in the class are not permitted to make amendments to the design. Any competitive advantage must be derived by the skill of the skipper and crew. Unique to the Farr 40 class is that the One Design rules are internationally governed, dictate an owner driver rule and impose limitations on number of professional crew members. The Farr 40 fleet in Australia consists of 20 boats, 12 of which will compete in the 2014/15 Farr 40 Australian Series. Crews in this Class consist of yachting luminaries and Olympians including Tom King, Malcolm Page and Will Ryan. After a stunning 3rd place at the recent NSW State Title, Jeff and the crew are motivated to end the season with a podium position. CYC Youth Sailing Academy Graduate Evan Walker will be teaming up with Jeff as Tactician for Edake. Evan is a two time winner of the Hardy Cup, which is one of Australia s most prestigious match racing events. Evan has been sailing with Jeff for three years and the Edake crew, often the dark horse, will certainly be one to watch. The crew consists of long-time mainsail trimmer Noel Holder, Jib Trimmer Scotty Francis, Jeff s son Lachlan on mast and youthful talent including Jaidan Stevens, Tim Lake and Rosie Lee. 13 Kindergarten Queensland based Rod Jones is another new member to the Class. Rod predominantly sails out of the Mooloolaba Yacht Club however, will keep his newly purchased Farr 40, Kindergarten at the Middle Harbour Yacht Club for the 2014/15 season. Formerly a SB20 sailor, Rod was keen to convert to Farr 40 sailing with the likelihood of the Rolex Farr 40 World Championships coming to Sydney in Kindergarten has entered the Professional division and it is hoped this experience will put them in good stead for the Worlds. As the newcomer to the Class, Kindergarten is giving the Farr 40 members plenty to worry about having received three podium positions from four regattas in their first season. They are currently placed 3rd on the National leaderboard, just two points ahead of Jeff Carter s Edake. Tactician Will Ryan competed in the 2012 London Olympics in the 470 Class and is now focussing on a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. 15 Transfusion Five time National Champion and 2011 World Champion Guido Belgiorno-Nettis and the Transfusion crew certainly have the winning formula when it comes to Farr 40 racing. Guido has been sailing in the Class for eight years and has recently stepped down after a two year term as President. Currently in 2nd place on the National Championship leaderboard, just two points behind Voodoo Chile, Guido and the crew find themselves in unfamiliar territory and will certainly not be handing over the John Calvert-Jones Trophy without a fight. Katie Spithill is back as Tactician for the Nationals. Katie has been sailing since she was 5 years old and comes from a famous sailing family being the sister of Jimmy Spithill Skipper of Oracle Team USA who recently won the America s Cup held in San Francisco in Growing up on Pittwater, Katie s only way of transport to home was by boat so it s no wonder she is following in her family s footsteps as a successful young sailor. The core of the Transfusion team consists of Olympic and America s Cup veteran Bob Wilmot, talented trimmer Sam Williams, 2011 Crewman of the Year Pete Sheldrick, renowned bowman Mitch White, Strategist Mike Leigh who is currently ranked second in the ISAF World Rankings, 13 foot skiff National Champion Matt Stenta, youngster Jack Hubbard and Will Mackenzie who has recently returned from the 2014 World Match Racing Tour with Team Gilmour. Their first Voodoo Chile was purchased from Lang Walker in Voodoo Chile has won the Corinthian trophy three years in a row and has moved up to the Professional division for this season. Having won the recent NSW State Title, Andrew and the Voodoo Crew are focussed more than ever with their eyes set firmly on the National trophy. It has been neck and neck between Voodoo Chile and Transfusion all season and no doubt this weekend s battle will be down to the wire right to the end. Well known Tactician David Chapman (Chappo) won the 2014 Farr 30 Worlds in Copenhagen, the Hardy Cup in 2013 and at just 26 years of age was recently named the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron s Sailor of the Year. 17 Forty After a two year break from Farr 40 sailing, Sam Hill is back and has his eye on the Fast 40 division trophy. Due to a late scratching from Lang Walker, Sam fortuitously acquired many of the experienced crew from Kokomo. During the past twelve months, Forty has won Division 2 of Hamilton Island Race Week, 1st Bledisloe Cup for the Stepping Stone Regatta and finished 3rd in the Half Moon Bay Classic. Having reached the top of the world in sailing with a 470 Class gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, we are excited to have Tactician Tom King competing at the Nationals. Tom has been sailing Farr 40 s for four years with former Owner Ivan Wheen aboard Sputnik and together they came fourth in the 2007 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship. Forty has recently had a facelift and is looking as schmick as her crew list and we hope Sam enjoys sailing with the Australian fleet at his host club. Late last year, Gordon made the transition and purchased one of the Transfusion boats, now renamed Zen. Zen has been the leading Corinthian boat this season and is just a few points behind the professional teams. There is plenty of experience and youthful talent aboard Zen and they will be aiming for the National Corinthian Division trophy at this regatta. Tactician Sean Kirkjian etched a place in Sydney to Hobart history when he became the youngest person to skipper a yacht in the race 25 years ago at the age of 17. More recently, Sean was aboard Victoire which won the Tattersall s Cup in the 2015 Sydney to Hobart race.
