3 Slide Titles T y p o g r a p h y PowerPoint offers several standard layouts options (Title slide, Bulleted list, Chart, Table, etc) Choosing from these layouts will usually give good results since they all include a Title Area Always choose a slide layout that includes a Title area, and enter a descriptive title for each slide. While examining the following slides, ask yourself how readable versus legible does the material display onscreen? How easy is it to read the blue text over the blue background? The quick brown fox jumps over the Special Features Images Special Features Images How do I make my PowerPoint file upload / download faster? Compress the images. Make a back-up copy of your PowerPoint presentation. Right click on any image in the presentation, choose Format Picture Click on the Picture tab Click on the Compress button In the Compress Pictures dialog box, make the following selections: Apply to: All Pictures in Document Change resolution: Web/Screen Options: check off Compress pictures, and Delete cropped areas of pictures. Click on OK If an image looks funky, go to original untouched file for replacement. Special Features Images Special Features Notes To insert an image in to the PowerPoint slide: From Insert menu > Picture > From File Or Drag and Drop image file from folder to destination.. TIP: avoid using copy and paste to place the image in the slide, this method is considered to bloat the file size. Notes function is a part of PowerPoint software, access feature in the Normal View Notes can be added which will display with the individual slide on TUSK Here are a few tips for how to use Notes 6

7 Special Features Notes Special Features Formatting Notes Notes need to be wrapped with 2 tags, which will be invisible when uploaded Begin with this tag <note> enter your text</note> end with this tag That is all you have to do, but you can do more! Once you have the basic note tag in place you can use other HTML tags to enhance and format your notes <note> <p>this is a paragraph tag </p> <p>insert hyperlinks to a web site <a href=" HSDB</a></p> </note> Special Features Notes For acknowledging sources for figures etc. <source> Gone with the Wind </source> And for acknowledging copyright ownership (mandatory if you do not own it) <copyright> Publisher s name, 1923 </copyright> Special Features Formatting Notes Once you have the basic notes tag in place you can use other html tags to enhance and format your notes <note> <p> Insert hyperlinks to TUSK content <a href=" 2C/13303/13302">TUSK Content </a></p> </note> Special Features Notes Formatting Special Features Charts <note> <p> Shopping list </p> <ul> <li> Apples </li> <li> Milk </li> <li> bread </li> </ul> </note> Don t forget to use the HTML list tags, if forgotten your Shopping list will display as one run-on line. Apples Milk bread Charts created in Excel then embedded in a PowerPoint slide display very well in the downloadable version of the PowerPoint file. Not so for the slide generated for the TUSK Image Collection. Work around: insert a screen capture of the chart as an image. Remember to use Title area to describe the chart! 7

8 Special Features Charts Other Tips When naming Power Point file, provide full text, natural language file name. This is especially important when TUSK staffers upload material unfamiliar to them. (Ex. Equine Musculoskeletal.) Provide your name and credentials as they should appear, (Ex. John J. Smith, DVM, PhD, MS, DACVS.) Male Female Provide a copy of PPT file (on ZIP or CD), and drop file(s) by our offices, or send FILES to Library Curricular Support staff as attachments. Indicate the Need by Date, when students will need to have access to the material on the TUSK. Special Features Tables Other Tips Tables created in PowerPoint display very nicely in TUSK Remember to use the Title area to describe the table! The following information will be REQUIRED during upload, have it ready or pass it on to the staff member who will be uploading your presentation TUSK Course name Title of PowerPoint presentation TUSK Author (include your credentials as they should appear (ex PhD, MS, DVM, MD) Keywords for indexing purposes on Tufts University Sciences Knowledgebase (TUSK) System (reproductive, respiratory etc) Copyright owner (probably you) Special Features Tables processing time Upload DRUGS Placebo Tetracycline Ampicillin MALE FEMALE UNKNOWN SEX Please prepare your presentation before using TUSK Manage Content Tool to publish your PowerPoint to the TUSK... The Manage Content Tool processes a PowerPoint presentation file of any size (TUSK Image Collection version) in about 15 minutes. The downloadable version of file loads even faster... This presentation was put together to help familiarize you with the requirements for placing PowerPoint presentations in TUSK [ T u f t s U n i v e r s i t y S c i e n c e s K n o w l e d g e b a s e ].
