We are training the counsellors of tomorrow CTPDC Counselling Training Limited Registered in England and Wales No
Counselling Training Personal Development Consulting (CTPDC) was established in 1998 as a private organisation to provide counselling training at all levels and tailor-made courses in Liverpool. In 2004 we moved to current premises at 49 Rodney Street, Liverpool, situated near the Anglican Cathedral of Liverpool. It became a limited company as CTPDC Counselling Training Limited in Rodney street is a sought after area for professionals and specialist services. It retained much of its glory as people still live in the classic town houses. The building is easily accessible by car, on foot (10 minutes from the city centre) or by public transport. ENSURING EXCELLENCE CTPDC Counselling Training Limited specialises in running counselling courses. These are the only courses it delivers. All our efforts and facilities are devoted to these programmes. We incorporate current research into our teaching, thus your study is at the cutting edge of counselling. Accredited courses The design of our courses allows students with diverse personal interest to match their aims and objectives with that of the courses. The quality of learning and learning support is upheld by the involvement of independent external bodies (such as the nationally recognised accrediting bodies), external moderation and examination and the regular visits by our internal moderator. Quality assurance There are no more than 12 students in our courses and there are two tutors to all Diploma in Counselling courses. This ensures the highest possible quality of teaching and training. It encourages the emergence of healthy group dynamics as well as sufficient time for individuals students to contribute to the course. Our tutors will provide the necessary support to all students to fulfil their aim, matching the students learning and training efforts. CTPDC is an organisational member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and abides by its ethical framework. All course tutors are qualified counsellors with a teaching qualification or the equivalent. They have individual and group counselling supervision and ongoing personal development. CTPDC implemented a comprehensive system of quality assurance that covers the monitoring, evaluation and review of the courses as well as the progression of individual students. Shirley Dinwoodie I did a Basic Counselling Course about six years ago, just for something to do in the evening! I enjoyed the course, and I signed up for the Intermediate Course. It gives plenty of opportunity for self-analysis, I soon became hooked on looking at myself and my relationships, then other people and their relationships. I made the decision to do my Diploma in Counselling at CTPDC, one of the best decisions I have ever made. I did most of my volunteer work with Liverpool Bereavement Service. I have also worked with drug users and victims of domestic violence. I m currently employed in a college as part of the Learner Support Team. Being a qualified counsellor played a significant part in my obtaining this employment.
Designed for students We welcome students from all walks of life and provide provisions for students with disabilities. We take individual learning abilities into account. In order to allow and encourage candidates from all kinds of backgrounds, our courses are part-time. In our view it allows most people to devote the necessary time and effort to the course work while meeting their other obligations. The diversity of our student groups makes it possible that by the end of your course you will be able to approach each new issue, be it professional or personal, with the benefit of a range of perspectives, attitudes and backgrounds. Studying is a commitment and investment of time and money. This is why we organise open days for our prospective students. The open days are compulsory for the perspective Diploma in Counselling students. In these open days, candidates have an opportunity to meet the course tutors and get a clear and detailed presentation of the requirements of the course, the timetable for the whole course, accreditation and similar issues. It also provides candidates with the opportunity to put questions to the course tutors, clarify issues and therefore be able to make an informed decision. Our courses account for individual training needs and utilise the strengths of group dynamics. Students are expected to pursue the course with a positive commitment, taking full advantage of the resources and facilities offered by CTPDC and, in particular, contact with the tutors, the director of CTPDC, Advisory Board members and other students. On which Basic Counselling Skills Course can you rub shoulders and discuss issues with Diploma in Counselling students as well as with qualified counsellors in the relaxed atmosphere such as CTPDC s Chasing Away the Winter Party?
Heather Lovelady I completed my counselling training at CTPDC in I have always wanted to become a counsellor as long as I can remember. However, life determined a very different career path, which took me across two continents. With CTPDC I have been able to fulfil my long yearning ambition. I did my placement with Active Age and planned and implemented the extension of its counselling services. Today I am the main co-ordinator of Active Age s counselling services in Liverpool. People join courses with different aims and objectives. Very often they do not complete the course, because there is mismatch between the course design and their objectives. In this brochure we attempt to give as much information as possible in a limited space so that you could have an initial impression about how the course fits your expectations. Our Diploma in Counselling course is tailored for people who want to become professional counsellors or want to acquire high-level counselling skills. By completing our Diploma in Counselling course, students will have acquired the necessary number of training and placement hours to apply to become a BACP accredited counsellor. Our Diploma in Counselling course requires students to meet a high standard of learning, counselling training practice, counselling research and personal development. While CTPDC s courses are recognised by a number of nationwide bodies (such as the Learning and Skills Council), it does not seek and does not receive any government or charitable funding. In this way we can maintain our autonomy in designing our course and course content for our students. However, we believe that our fees are competitive for what we offer (detailed in this brochure) and our payments structure allows students to spread the cost over the duration of the course. On which Diploma in Counselling Course do you receive comprehensive and in-depth sessions and guidance on doing counselling research as a part of your training?
CTPDC Counselling Training Limited is striving for training of excellence. In order to achieve it, we have developed our courses on firm principles. The course curriculum is based on the competencies students have to acquire during their studies to become practising therapeutic counsellors. These competencies derive from the expectations laid down by British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. The curriculum and the teaching style are firmly rooted in Carl Rogers s Person-Centred Counselling, but students will learn about other approaches. We believe that students are primarily responsible for their learning and development. Our role is to provide the environment in which this learning can take place and be encouraged as well as give the support to overcome temporary problems. Thus, we provide a physical environment which is beneficial to learning; create a regulated environment which is beneficial to the identification of particular learning needs and create appropriate assessment methods, which not only helps the identification of strengths and weaknesses of students, but also encourages learning and act as a feedback mechanism. The commitment to equal opportunities and the democratic environment, whose bases are that the rules are known and accepted by everybody ( free within boundaries ) and the role of the students in creating these rules ( ground rules ) encourage group learning (complementary to individual learning) and peer support. To ensure that you arrive to the class prepared, we provide all the course material on a CD, including recommended reading list and a list of compulsory readings. During the course, students form reading and presentation groups and CTPDC provides the necessary technical equipment for these activities. Our course uses a combination of training methods ranging from lectures, group discussions, group, pair and individual exercises, videos and student presentations. Students have to prepare written assignments and audio/video recordings. A number of sessions throughout the three years are delivered by guest speakers who are experts of the subject. On which Counselling Course can you do so much in three years?
Tutors Our tutors are qualified counsellors and hold a teaching qualification. We expect our tutors to be able to teach theories and demonstrate the practical application of these theories. They have to be able to manage the class and use effectively the group dynamics that emerge during the course for the benefit of the learning of individual students. Tutors also have to show the values and behaviours that could contribute to the personal and professional development of the students. Learning Support CTPDC has a comprehensive library of books, refereed journals and videos. We are able to provide students with boadband access to the Internet. Our Diploma in Counselling students also receive a life-long address and access to our internal discussion forum. We have all the necessary equipment (VHS, DVD, television, overhead projector, digital projector, computers) for audio-visual sessions for the use of the tutors and the students. While our Diploma in Counselling students are encouraged to organise their training placement, CTPDC has developed extensive relationships to potential placement organisations and guarantees the placement by the middle of the second year. Students with special needs who require additional equipment or resources will be considered on a case-by-case basis. CTPDC provides access to wheelchair users. Sessions Our daytime sessions start at 10:00 a.m. and finish at 1:00 p.m. Our evening classes start at 6:00 p.m. and finish at 9:00 p.m. Coffee and tea (at cost price) is available at our kitchen before and after the class as well as during the 15-minute break half-way through the session. Punctuality is a key contribution to the success of the course, thus we ask students to inform the tutor if he or she is unable to attend the class or would be late. Don Loy I am in the final year of my diploma course. I started counselling training because I wanted to complement the course I had taken on mentoring adolescents. I gained so much from the intermediate counselling skills course that I decided I wanted to become a professional, qualified counsellor. The experience I got from the diploma course encouraged me to sign up for a programme on diet built on counselling. Without the course and my diploma group I would not have been able to maintain the diet. Furthermore, the course encouraged me to take a full-time employment. My dissertation is about counselling and people who lost their eyesight. As a child, due to an illness, I lost 90% of my eyesight.
While we recognise the importance of continuity provided by the two tutors, we also recognise the importance of hearing and experiencing different approaches or thoughts about various subjects. The list below contains the sessions that are delivered by our guest speakers. The list should be considered not as a definitive list as we are constantly adding further sessions and workshops. The cost of these sessions and workshops are included in the course fee. Adlerian Psychotherapy The session introduces Adlerian Psychotherapy, the therapeutic process in this approach. Bereavement This session introduces students on our first year diploma course to the process and stages of bereavement. 8 We think hard working people deserve fun. Our students work hard throughout the course and we provide the opportunities for them to relax and enjoy the time. From the numerous pictures we have chosen some and present them here. These photos were taken at parties, residential weekends and other occasions.
Jacqueline Kay I am in the final year of my diploma course. I joined CTPDC s diploma course after completing my intermediate course at another college. The emphasis on personal development here came as a revelation. This has enabled me to meet the demanding academic and professional requirements of the course. Now I m doing my training placement at two organisations. I recently started working with people with special needs. After the completion of my training I want to teach counselling. The Basic Counselling Skills course is for students who want to develop counselling skills for their personal life and/or for work. These courses are also the mainstream route to our first year Diploma in Counselling course or the Intermediate Counselling Skills courses of other institutions. If you successfully apply to our Diploma in Counselling course, the course fee foe the basic counselling skills course will be reimbursed. Entry requirement There are no specific requirements for applicants for this course. Aims of the course The aim of our Basic Counselling Skills course is to give students a basic understanding of counselling and the skills required. The process will enable students to develop their self-confidence and self-esteem. At completion of the course, students listening and responding skills will become more effective and their interpersonal communications and interpersonal relationships will improve. Students will also be able to demonstrate the basic skills required in a counselling process. They will become aware of their own behaviours and prejudices. They will have gained an understanding of the three core concepts Respect, Empathy, Genuineness of Carl Rogers Person-Centred Therapy. Course requirements In addition to the tutor and peer observation, students are expected to maintain a weekly learning journal. Those students who want to progress to our Diploma in Counselling course will self-evaluation assignment. also have to submit a 500-word Course Structure and Assessment The course runs three times a year. Each course consists of ten three-hour sessions (either in the evening or in the morning). The course consists of three main themes Understanding what is counselling The basic skills of counselling and the core concepts of person-centred therapy The ethical framework of BACP. The primary assessment of students is based on tutor and peer observation.
Why doing it with CTPDC? This is a 450-hour, three-year course for people who want to become professional counsellors or want to acquire high-level counselling skills. By completing the course, students can apply to become a BACP accredited counsellor. The course is a balanced composition of counselling skills, personal development and counselling research. We believe that the students' development in any of these components requires development in the other components. We expect our students to perform well in each of these areas to meet the awarding requirements. If you have done a 150-hour guided counselling course elsewhere (for example, an Intermediate counselling skills course), you can join the second year, providing you meet the requirements. (see the next page for more details). Apart from the main theoretical framework of the course (person-centred counselling), students will be introduced to the key concepts of Gestalt Therapy and Transactional Analysis, as well as the contribution of Virginia Satir to counselling theory. In the last two terms, time is set aside for introducing students to the conceptual frameworks of child development. This course has been designed with the intention of providing the highest possible quality training. We believe that the support that we provide to the course participants is unprecedented in the sector. The maximum number of students in any one course will not exceed 12. There will be two tutors for each course. There will be two individual tutorials a month for every student. Although students are encouraged to seek their own placement, we guarantee that all of our students will have their placement by the middle of the second year. Our special sessions and theme-workshops will be delivered by our guest speakers who are experts in the subject concerned. We provide all the necessary equipment for tutor and student works and presentations. Students will have access to all the refereed counselling journals. Our residential weekends will take place in an environment that facilitates maximum learning experience (including the third year residential weekend abroad) On which counselling course can you have your first and second year residential weekend in a serene place like on the picture above?
Course overview As we recognise that students arrive to our course with different expectations, we provide appropriate exit routes. We can also consider applications from students who have completed an Intermediate Counselling Skills course or equivalent (150 hours of guided counselling training) for our Diploma course at the second year. Such applicants have to demonstrate that their skills, knowledge and personal development are at the level we expect from our own students in a three-hour session (that include a formal interview). They would also have fill in the appropriate application form (enclosed). The course is accredited by ABC Awards (formerly Centra), a nationally recognised accrediting body. Entry requirements Applicants have to submit a 500-word personal statement. Applicants have to attend one of CTPDC s open day. In addition, there is an interview for assessing the applicant s suitability for the course. If the applicant is not accepted onto the course, he or she will be given the opportunity to discuss this in a further interview. In order to be awarded the Diploma in Counselling, students will have to fulfil the following requirements: The course requirements detailed under each year One hundred hours of supervised counselling practice (but in order to meet BACP s requirements of counsellor accreditation, we encourage students to complete 150 hours of supervised counselling practice) Twenty hours of personal counselling On which Diploma in Counselling Course do you get a full term dedicated to child development, the effects of culture and society on the socialisation process from an international prospective, through lectures, exercises and the most acclaimed feature films?
While CTPDC encourages students to find their own placement, our reputation and the sterling work of our previous students on placement enables us to guarantee that all students will have their placements by the middle of the second year of the course. Here is a small selection of organisations where our diploma students had their placements recently: Listening Ear Personal Social Services Centre for Bereavement Saint Katherine Hospital Active Age RASA Southwest Lancs Bereavement Centre Women s Aid Garston and Speke Domestic Violence Centre SWAN Bail Support COMPASS CIC Doctors surgeries Secondary schools Prisons Marianna Urdhin I m in the final year of my diploma course and now I m concentrating on my research. It is about the effectiveness of self-help groups for women recovering from breast cancer and are under 50 years old. Getting the clearance from the appropriate ethical board for this research was a challenging task, but I succeeded. The exercise also helped me to clarify my research question, my hypotheses and methodology.
The aims of the first year are to raise students awareness of themselves and of the counselling interaction. Students will be introduced to a number of counselling skills and will gain an understanding of the models of counselling learnt on the course and the ability to use them appropriately. They will acquire the ability to recognise and use the skills needed in initiating an appropriate counselling interaction. Students will have a working knowledge of Carl Rogers s Person Centred Counselling as well as an awareness of other approaches to counselling. They will have the ability to use counselling skills in their own work setting. The course consists of three compulsory units, each with five modules. 14 Mary Sloman I began my career as a social worker in London. Over eighteen years my employment working with a wide range of clients of different ages and cultural backgrounds.
