1 PTRT 1472: Petroleum Data Management II Drilling and Production Course Syllabus and Outline: Spring 2016 CRN STECH 212 Mon 5 9:30 pm CRN STECH 312 Tue 1-5 pm Course Description Overview of computer applications in drilling and production; covers the history, fundamentals, terminology and software for drilling and production; introduction to the principles of drilling, production and reservoir. Credit: 4 (Lecture and Lab) Prerequisites: PTRT 1470 and computer skills Learning Outcomes: In lecture sessions, students will learn the principles of drilling and production of hydrocarbons from data management perspective. In laboratory sessions, students will gain applying knowledge in managing and manipulating petroleum drilling and production data, creating and interpreting work product such as well logs montages. They will also demonstrate skills and competencies in coring, formation testing, drilling program, and drilling fluid. Laboratory sessions give students the ability to Import raw data to spreadsheet Prepare data for analysis or for exporting to software Overlay and analyze data layers Apply rules and relationships to data There will be emphasis on the use of spreadsheets. 2 Instructor Abi Olowe, Ph.D Tel: (832) Dr. Olowe has been involved with academics and training most of his career. He was Associate Professor at Western Michigan University ( ). Dr. Olowe worked in the Petroleum industry as a programmer. Among other things, his expertise is in Curriculum Development, Professional Training, Internet Applications Development, and Technical Projects Management. Dr. Olowe is also a Microsoft certified programmer; he has published 12 theological books and over 45 scientific publications. Professor Olowe currently teaches Petroleum Engineering Technology at HCC. Course Requirements and Grading Policy Course materials All course materials including syllabus, power point presentation of each chapter, lab guide, lab lectures, and notes are posted on the learning web. Go to select For Information, click faculty, click Learning Web, search for OLOWE, Click on the name/picture, and select your course 3

4 Assessments: Lab and Project: 38% Tests: 42% Final Exam: 20% All tests are based on the materials posted on the learning web. There will be a minimum of 3 tests, each after 2 to 4 chapters (see outline). The Final Exam is comprehensive; it covers all the chapters in the lecture and laboratory guides. All tests and Final Exam are multiple choices. The student must bring a scantron on the test date; two scantrons are needed for the final. See guide sheet on scantron on page 7. Laboratory sessions PTRT 1472 Laboratory sessions are conducted in a computer room or classroom with laptops every other week. It is advisable that the student bring a laptop with Microsoft Excel installed during Lab sessions. The student may sign in for one at the library or with the IT department. The student must be able to login to the HCC system in order to participate in the lab sessions. This means that the student MUST have a user ID and a password. The laboratory room must always be left clean no littering of papers. The student may lose points for not keeping the laboratory clean. If using the institution s system, the student MUST log off after each laboratory session. There are 7 Laboratory sessions. ALL sessions require the physical presence of the student to obtain credit. Students may be allowed to work in groups in some of the sessions, but except for session 7, EACH student must provide his/her own report. Sessions 1 to 6 each carries 20 points. Session 7 carries 40 points. Session 7 is a SOFTWARE GROUP PROJECT that must be submitted and presented on the day of the session. The class will be divided into groups of 5 to 7 students with a group leader for the purpose of Session 7. Students may start to work on the project after Session 2; each group will submit only one report and all students in the group will receive the same credit. Each presentation with questions lasts 15 min. One or more students in the group may make the oral presentation within the allowable time frame. Report should be 4-6 pages of 1.5 spacing using Times New Roman with font size 12. The grading policy for Session 7 is as follows: PTRT 1472 Lab 7 Presentation grading criteria Ppt Presentation Oral Clarity Appearance Make good ppt slides with good transitions and effects. The instructor will grade lab work at the end of the class. If time runs out, the instructor may require lab work to be sent by before the end of the day. I receive a lot of messages, so, please follow these instructions: 4

5 1. Identify the course number and course title. 2. Identify yourself stating your full name as you registered for this course (last name, first name). 3. Identify the Lab session and date due as the subject of your message. 4. Excel file must be sent as an attachment; do not send zip or xlm files 5. Use your lastname to name your file 6. Please avoid sending to instructor if he does not ask for it Grading Assignments The course grade is recorded as A (90-100%), B (80-89%), C (70-79%), D (60-69%) or F (0-59%). In accordance to HCC policy, plus or minus grades are not given. Make up Tests Generally, there will be no make-up tests given. However, the instructor reserves the right to allow for ONLY 1 make up test based on convincing evidence. Avoid being absent on test day or project due days. Taking makeup test or turning in projects late (after test day or project day) must be approved by instructor otherwise zero score will be awarded for the missed work. Emergency cases must be communicated. Support documents must be provided for emergency cases. See page 7 for guide sheet. Attendance Requirement All students must participate in Group Lab work to receive credit. The student is required to be on time for lectures and highly encouraged to participate during lectures. The instructor uses attendance for borderline grades. Attendance and Withdrawal Policy All students are required to be present during class sessions. Students must communicate timely with the instructor in cases they need to be absent from a class period. Withdrawal policies apply as they are described in the HCC policy, rules, and regulations. All students must consult the HCC Student Handbook and College Catalogue regarding withdrawal policies. Students are responsible for materials covered during their absences, and it is the student's responsibility to consult with instructors for make-up assignments. Class attendance is checked daily by instructors. Although it is the responsibility of the student to drop a course for non-attendance, the instructor has full authority to drop a student for excessive absences. Academic Honesty The Petroleum Engineering Technology Department and specifically this instructor, follows the HCCS policies on scholastic dishonesty, which includes, but is not limited, to cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. All HCC rules, policies, and regulations apply as they are described in the HCC Student Handbook. Students with Disabilities: "Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disability Services Office at the respective college at the beginning of each semester. Emergency Preparedness: Call HCC Police at : Place number in your phone now if you have not already done so. HCC Instructions to the students 1. HCC is a college institute, so the professional behavior will be applied in the class and during the class time between the students and Instructor and/or between the students themselves. 5

6 2. All the HCC rules and regulations will be applied in the semester, and for all courses/classes. 3. Any student s attempt to cheat or actual cheating alone or with another student will be given ZERO grade and dismissed from the class (for both). Additionally, a report will be written against he/she/them and submitted to the appropriate HCC officials, and all the other related HCC rules will be applied. 4. Students will not be allowed to speak directly to each other during class or reply to a question without the required permission from the Instructor. 5. Students must respect the class time, Instructor, and other students. No acceptance for any student later than 20 minutes from lecture start time for any reason, and the student will be considered absent since the attendance will be calculated in the beginning of the class period. 6. The Instructor will drop or FAIL any student from the class due to his/her absence reaching (4) classes or more of all the semester class time. 7. Any electronic devices (cell phone, IPhone, and any other similar) except laptops will not permitted in the class for any reason and all the students must TURN OFF these devices before entering the class, and keep them in their bag or pocket. 8. No food or drinks are allowed in the class room with exception of one bottle of water. 9. Any misbehavior by any student, he or she will receive a verbal notice for the first time. If it is repeated he/she will be dismissed from class and a report will be written and issued to the Dean of the HCC/Northeast Campus. He or She will not be accepted back into class. 10. It is not allowed for any student to leave the class during test time for any reason (even for the restroom) unless he/she finishes the exam and delivers the exam s paper to the Instructor. 11. The student commitments: Read the chapters in the Textbook, Handouts and watch VIDEOS. Title IX of the education amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. A 1681 et. Seq. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 requires that institutions have policies and procedures that protect students rights with regard to sex/gender discrimination. Information regarding these rights are on the HCC website under Students-Anti-discrimination. Students who are pregnant and require accommodations should contact any of the ADA Counselors for assistance. It is important that every student understands and conforms to respectful behavior while at HCC. Sexual misconduct is not condoned and will be addressed promptly. Know your rights and how to avoid these difficult situations. Log in to: Sign in using your HCC student account, then go to the button at the top right that says Login and enter your student number. EGLS 3 (Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System) At Houston Community College, professors believe that thoughtful student feedback is necessary to improve teaching and learning. During a designated time near the end of the term, you will be asked to answer a short online survey of research-based questions related to instruction. The anonymous results of the survey will be made available to your professors and department chairs for continual improvement of instruction. Go to for more information. 6

7 Scantron Guide Sheet Scantrons and #2 Pencils are required for each test. The Following Information must be provided on Scantrons: Lastname, Firstname, Subject (PTRT1472), Test No., Period (Sp 2016), Date Scantron Notes: Points will be subtracted from test if scantron guidelines are not observed. Scantron must be clean and clearly marked according to company notes on each scantron sheet. If you bubble wrong selection on Scantron, the erased marks must be clean completely so that machine does not count answers wrong; Use new scantrons if your eraser causes smudging. Have new ones handy on the test dates. Answer questions that require (abcde or true false) selections. Select the best answer. Read instructions/questions carefully. Time for tests will be limited (based on number of questions and at instructor s discretion). So study materials ahead of time. You will not be able to complete tests on time (correctly). Be on time. Tests will be picked up promptly when the test-time is up. Scantrons will be evaluated and may be returned for your review. However, they must be turned in for evidence and proof files for this class. Please turn in your graded scantron after reviewing. A photo copy can be made by using your cell if you need to have a copy for your records. Guide Sheet for Support Document and acknowledgement letter for late or missed assignment In order to receive full credit for scores for missed and or late assignments, student needs to provide a hard copy of support evidence for emergency cases and a letter (hand written preferred, signed and dated) covering the following statements from the syllabus (hand it to instructor in person next class): 1- You need to say that you know you will be awarded 0 point for any late work for non-emergency cases no later than one class period after the date of emergency. 2- You need to say that you know that emergency cases are things beyond student's control like health, accidents, and cases in life that occur unplanned once-in-a-while or non-frequent. 3- You need to say you will do everything in your power to show student ethical behavior for all courses in SciEngTech at HCC-NE and turn in all required assignments on-time as specified in their respective syllabi. 7
