1 South Dakota State University Department of Engineering Technology & Management Construction Management Program Information SDSU Mission, Vision, and Goals As the land-grant institution for the state, South Dakota State University (SDSU) has a clear and distinct mission in teaching and learning; research, scholarship, and creative activity, and engagement. MISSION: South Dakota State University will create a prosperous future for the people of South Dakota and their communities, and for the region and the nation, through excellence in education, in innovation and new knowledge creation and in putting knowledge to work. VISION: South Dakota State University will be a nationally recognized, locally relevant, student centered and accessible land-grant university. SDSU STRATEGIC GOALS: Goal 1: Enhance academic excellence and strengthen scholarship and artistic activities. Goal 2: Foster economic growth, vibrant communities, and a sustainable environment. Goal 3: Expand the reach of the university through engagement, technology and globalization. Goal 4: Establish a sustainable financial resource base. The Construction Management program is one of 5 academic programs in the Department of Engineering Technology & Management (ETM). Our other programs include: Electronics Engineering Technology Manufacturing Engineering Technology Industrial Management General Engineering (non-degree) Industrial Management Graduate program ETM is housed in Solberg Hall, centrally located on the SDSU Campus. About the Construction Management Program The Construction Management (CM) program at SDSU was developed to meet the needs of the construction industry in South Dakota, enrolling its first students in fall The Highway-Heavy-Utilities and Building Chapters of the Associated General Contractors of South Dakota jointly contributed start up funds for the program. MISSION The program prepares graduates to ethically and competently assume entry level positions in construction management whether it be in building, civil, specialty or entrepreneurial areas of construction. CM Program Goals Our overarching program goal is to: Produce competent constructors capable of serving the construction industry s needs in managing all aspects of complex construction projects both in the state and nationally. Program Objectives / Student Outcomes: A. Compare favorably in their technical and managerial knowledge with students completing similar programs both regionally and nationally. B. Demonstrate technical and managerial proficiency in managing all aspects of a complex construction project as expected of an entry level constructor. C. Be productively employed in the construction industry in some aspect of managing the construction of projects in the state, region or nation.
2 Program Assessment Tools & Results In order to accomplish these objectives and outcomes, we have developed the following plans to achieve and measure progress: Student Outcome A: Compare favorably in their technical and managerial knowledge with students completing similar programs both regionally and nationally. We use data from the AIC exam at the end of the program, collect data in course expected outcomes to determine our effectiveness in mid-program, and in selected courses. Student Outcome B: Demonstrate technical and managerial proficiency in managing all aspects of a complex construction project as expected of an entry level constructor. We achieve this outcome by: a. Providing active learning opportunities through classroom exercises, projects that are based on actual field situations, team projects, in-class presentations, and; b. Continuing to support and encourage student interaction with industry through CM Club activities, field trips to jobsites, and participation in estimating competitions, and; c. Maintaining the level of student activity team building endeavors such as float building for the Hobo Day parade, service learning via the Habitat Blitz Build, producing the CM program newsletter, the annual Pheasant Hunt, and other service and fundraising activities by the CM Club student organization. Student Outcome C: Be productively employed in the construction industry in some aspect of managing the construction of projects in the state, region or nation. We are presently placing 90% our graduates in regional construction industry positions. To address placement challenges in the construction employment market and for future program graduate placement in stronger economic times, we are proceeding in two ways: 1. Maintain our outreach efforts by continuing to reach out to current and potential employers in the North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska region through program marketing, invitations to participate in professional development events, and direct contact with current employers of our grads. 2. Continue to support our outreach and marketing efforts nationally by supporting faculty to attend meetings and conferences, supporting student teams to travel regional and national estimating competitions, attending the ACCE annual meeting, and marketing the program via our list serve.
