2 1859 Powell St, Suite 100 San Francisco, CA August 1, 2012 Dear Participant, Welcome to International Red Panda Day 2012! If this is your first year of participation thank you for helping us spread the word about red pandas. For our 3rd Annual International Red Panda Day (IRPD), our goal is to create as many Red Panda Rangers as possible on a single day around the world. A Red Panda Ranger is a special title given to children who learn and help spread the word about red pandas. To become a Red Panda Ranger, children will need to travel the five home country ranges of the red panda by completing at least 3 of the 5 challenge activities found in the attached participant packet. Your participant packet contains everything you need to manage IRPD and help us create more and enthusiastic Red Panda Rangers. The packet is available for download on our website at international-red-panda-day/. In addition to the activities, your participant packet includes an information sheet for future Red Panda Rangers and fun firefox facts with this year s guide, Laloo the Red Panda. The information sheet and fun fact sheet can be handed out to participating children upon entry or wherever they will begin the activities. The sheet explains their task as they travel to each activity station and complete the challenges on their quest to become Red Panda Rangers. For International Red Panda Day 2012, we envision children traveling the world as participants in the Red Panda Games. We suggest spreading the activity stations throughout your zoo, school or neighborhood. We understand that this may not be feasible for every participant. You are free to decide how best to organize the activities for their participants. Please let us know date, place, and links to an event page on your or other local website, if you create one. Upon the completion of 3 activities, children will be awarded with their Ranger level badges, a passport stamped with the 5 red panda home countries, and receive an official Red Panda Ranger Certificate. We have provided you with a blank certificate for you to fill in each child s name. We kindly ask that you take down a list of all the new Rangers you created and take digital photos of each new Red Panda Ranger, if possible. Please have their parent or guardian sign a completed Photo Release Form for Red Panda Network to use photos on our website and social media channels. Please send the Ranger list, signed forms and any activities to be returned to us to via at: IRPD@redpandanetwork.org or at Red Panda Network, 1859 Powell St, Suite 100, San Francisco, CA On the follow pages you will find explanations of the activities created for International Red Panda Day and the suggested age groups. You can choose to offer all of these activities or pick and choose the ones that best suit your needs. Activity: Spot the Difference with Laloo the Red Panda (Age Group: Elementary/Grade School children) Forest Rangers who study red pandas in the field must pay careful attention to details. Small hints such as a broken twig, a pawprint in the dirt, or scratchmarks on bamboo bark, can be tips that a red panda is nearby! Practice your field observation techniques in this fun "Spot the Difference" activity! Directions: Study the pictures of Laloo the Red Panda. There are 12 differences between the two pictures. In a group setting or one-on-one, see if the children can spot at least 10 differences. Red Panda Network 1859 Powell St, Suite 100, San Francisco, CA info@redpandanetwork.org

3 Activity: Friend or Foe (Age Group: All) There are many different animals that share the red panda s habitat. And it s thanks to our forest guardians efforts that help protect their homes. Learn more about the different friends and foes of the red panda. Directions: Participants will explore your facilities while spotting animals that share red panda habitat. Ask children to complete the activity hand out by naming and drawing 5 animals that live in the same region as red pandas (Nepal, China, India, Burma and Bhutan). Hint: If you are conducting this activity outside of a zoo or do not have exhibits featuring animals that share red panda habitat, you can provide a book for children to look up the information. Children can also look up this information online. Activity: Red Panda Coloring Mask (Age Group: Elementary/Grade School children) Help us raise awareness about red pandas and their adorable appearance by creating your very own red panda mask! You can keep these and use them throughout the year. Directions: Ask children to color in the provided red panda face template. Assist young children with cutting out the colored mask. Punch holes on each side of the red panda face and tie with a string to create a mask or tape the mask to a stick. Activity: Red Panda Word Puzzle and Pandoku (Age Group: All) Test your red panda knowledge with our red panda word puzzle and Pandoku, our panda word sudoku! Directions: Print out sheets containing the word puzzles and Pandoku. Provide pens to allow children to complete the puzzles, with help if needed. Activity: Red Panda Origami (Age Group: All) Origami is an ancient art form that takes something small and simple and turns it into something beautiful through simple steps. Origami is a lot like conservation, it is through simple steps and changes in our every day lives that we make profound change. Enjoy your red panda origami and remember as a red panda ranger, you now have the skills to teach people about red pandas. Directions: Provide children with a blank white or colored piece of paper. Use the step-by-step directions in the guide to create a red panda origami. We hope this information has been helpful to you. We would also like to invite you to an online conference call (via GoToMeeting) with other participating organizations and groups. The meeting will be scheduled for the weeks of August 6 th -16 th. If there are more than 16 participants interested in joining the conference call we will schedule a second call. We encourage you to attend as this will be your opportunity to hear suggestions from other participants and get your questions or concerns answered by Red Panda Network team members. Please IRPD@redpandanetwork.org with your preferred meeting date to register for the conference call. You will receive a link, dial-in number and access code as confirmation of attendance. If you have any further questions regarding International Red Panda Day, the activities, or the Participant Conference Call, please contact Amanda Larrinaga at IRPD@redpandanetwork.org or ext. 3. Kind Regards, Dirk Kloss CEO, Red Panda Network Red Panda Network 1859 Powell St, Suite 100, San Francisco, CA info@redpandanetwork.org

6 September 15, 2012 Dear Future Red Panda Ranger, Welcome to International Red Panda Day the third ever of its kind! This is your opportunity to participate in the world s most international awareness campaign dedicated to red pandas and become a Red Panda Ranger. What is a Red Panda Ranger? A Red Panda Ranger is a special title given to children who help us spread the word about red pandas. Red Pandas are endangered in the wild. For example, the red panda population in Nepal will go extinct in 40 years if we do not do something to help them. However, most people have never heard of a red panda. We need your help to let other people know about red pandas and that they are endangered. How do you become a Red Panda Ranger? You will be given the task of representing the home range countries where Red Pandas live: Nepal, India, China, Burma and Bhutan. To earn a red panda passport at the Red Panda Games, you will need to successfully compete in a minimum of 3 games. Scattered throughout your zoo or school are game stations. You will travel the world to find these game stations and complete the activities. Once you have successfully completed 3 challenges, you will receive a passport stamped with the five red panda home range countries and an official Red Panda Ranger certificate, both personalized with your name. Your picture may also be taken so we can post your name and photo on our website and newsletter. We hope you will continue on your journey around the world and compete in all 5 challenges. If you are unable to participate in all of the challenges today, you can visit us on our website at: for more information about additional activities you can complete to the remaining mountains you need to climb. Scan and send in your completed work to IRPD@redpandanetwork.org or mail to us at 1859 Powell St, Suite 100, San Francisco, CA and we will send you your personalized Red Panda Ranger certificate. Good luck on your quest to become a Red Panda Ranger! Dirk Kloss CEO, Red Panda Network Red Panda Network 1859 Powell St, Suite 100, San Francisco, CA info@redpandanetwork.org

7 Firefox Fun Facts with Laloo the Red Panda The scientific name of red panda is Ailurus Fulgens. The red panda is the original panda having been discovered 48 years before the giant black and white panda. The word panda is derived from the Nepalese word for eater of bamboo Nigalya Poonya. Chinese name for red panda is hunho which translated in English means firefox. This is due to their color and outer physical similarity to foxes. Mozilla s web browser Firefox is named after the red panda. Their logo is a red panda wrapped around the world. Red pandas have an extra thumb. It s an enlarged bone for grabbing bamboo stems. Red pandas claws are sharp and can be pulled back like a cat. Red pandas red and black colors are perfect for camouflaging from their predators. The red fur on their back is the same color as the moss found on trees where they live. Their black stomach makes them difficult to see from below. Perfect for camouflage. Laloo the Red Panda is your guide to International Red Panda Day! You can fnd out more about him and friends on your ipad this September! Laloo LLC donates a large part of ebook proceeds to RPN. Thanks! Red pandas can live up to 14 years in zoos and are estimated to live roughly 7-8 years in the wild. Red pandas are ready to have babies, called cubs, after they are a year old. Red pandas are officially classified as carnivores. They will occasionally eat an egg, insect or small animal but mostly stick to a diet of bamboo leaves, grass and fruit. Red pandas are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. They spend the rest of the day resting in trees to conserve their energy. Biologically, red pandas are most closely related to the raccoons. They are similar to giant pandas and bears but are classified as a family species of their own. There are 2 sub-species of red panda Ailurus Fulgens Fulgens found in Nepal, India, China and Bhutan; and Ailurus Fulgens Styani found only in China and Burma. A red panda eats approximately 200 leaves of bamboo daily. Red Panda Network 1859 Powell St, Suite 100, San Francisco, CA info@redpandanetwork.org
