5 FOREWORD Welcome to the Academic Year Together, we can make this the most successful year of yours. TANUVAS is a multicultural community that values and respects its members. The programs described in this bulletin are applicable to those students who have entered Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences (TANUVAS) in the academic year Students follow the programs described in the bulletin in effect at the time of their first registration. 11 TAMIL NADU VETERINARY AND ANIMAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), the first of its kind in India, was established in the year TANUVAS, in its 25 th year of existence and excellence, celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year TANUVAS continues to strive in ensuring excellence in education, research and extension in the fields of veterinary, animal and food sciences. Recognizing the unequivocal contributions of TANUVAS to growth and development of livestock, poultry and food sectors, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has showered it with the coveted Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award 2011 in the year 2012, a distinction no other Veterinary University in the country has received, which stands as a testimony to the excellence and accomplishments of TANUVAS in education, research and extension activities of livestock and poultry sectors concerned. Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has been able to attain a unique status amongst the top 50 universities bagging 36 th rank at national level and 3 rd rank at state level. Furthermore, TANUVAS is in the 5 th position in teaching, learning and resources at National level and first in the state. Among the 12 State Veterinary and Animal Sciences universities in India, TANUVAS is ranked number one. TANUVAS has six constituent colleges as below: 1. Madras Veterinary College (Chennai); 2. Veterinary College and Research Institute (Namakkal); 3. Veterinary College and Research Institute (Orathanadu, Thanjavur); 4. Veterinary College and Research Institute (Tirunelveli); 5. College of Food and Dairy Technology (Koduvalli, Chennai); and 6. College of Poultry Production and Management (Hosur). TANUVAS also has seven Research Stations, 20 Veterinary University Training and Research Centres, three Krishi Vigyan Kendras, three Farmers Training Centres, 11 Research Laboratories, two Ethno-Veterinary Herbal Training and Research Centres and one Agricultural Technology Information Centre, spread across the State to take care of research and extension needs of the livestock and poultry sectors. 1

12 MADRAS VETERINARY COLLEGE Madras Veterinary College (MVC), established in 1903, initially offered Diploma Course (Graduate of Madras Veterinary College - GMVC) in veterinary medicine. MVC has the unique privilege of being the first Veterinary College in the country to be affiliated to a University (University of Madras) for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) as early as 1936 and later MVC was recognized as a Centre for PG Research to award MSc and PhD degrees. In 1976, it became a constituent college of TNAU and remained with it till 1989 when TANUVAS was formed. This historically famous college celebrated its centenary year in Apart from BVSc and AH, MVSc (in 22 disciplines) and PhD (in 20 disciplines) degree programmes, MSc and MPhil in Biotechnology, MBA in Food and Livestock Business Management and PG Diploma courses in Bio-informatics, Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosis and Companion Animal Practice are also offered in this college. VETERINARY COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTES (Three colleges) VETERINARY COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE (Namakkal) Veterinary college at Namakkal is the second veterinary college started on as a constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. Later it became a constituent college of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University on On , the college moved to its own premises, an extensive and scenic campus of acres at Ladduvadi village, seven k.m. south to Namakkal town on the way to Mohanur with one Academic block and Multipurpose building. Now, the college campus is having three academic blocks, one clinical block, meat science and quality control laboratory, one administrative block, library with computer centre, physical education complex, staff and students cafeteria, students co-operative stores, staff quarters, vehicle shed, livestock and poultry farm complex, Animal Feed Analysis and Quality Assurance Laboratory (AFAQAL) and hostel buildings. The college has been accredited by the ICAR, New Delhi in the year The Udyog Excellence Award to the institution was awarded for the outstanding achievement through economic and social development, by the International Institute of Education and Management, New Delhi. ICAR and TANUVAS best teachers awards were awarded for the staff members of this institute. ISO 9001: 2

13 2000 certification was awarded to this institute from the year The silver jubilee year of the institute was celebrated during Silver jubilee memorial pillar was erected and the foundation stone was laid for the silver jubilee memorial building in commemoration of the silver jubilee year. Apart from BVSc & AH degree course, MVSc and PhD degree courses are offered in this college. At present 23 departments are offering postgraduate programme. To cater the needs of teaching, seven fully furnished class rooms are functioning in this college. Six are located in the main campus and one is in the teaching Veterinary Hospital campus at Namakkal town. Fully furnished class rooms are available with LCD projector, audio visual aids like slide projector, over head projector, public address system etc. VC &RI, TIRUNELVELI Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli was established as a third constituent college of TANUVAS, at Ramayanpatti in Tirunelveli, with a total area of acres of land. After getting the VCI approval in 2012, 40 students are being admitted every year for B.V.Sc. & A.H. curriculum from the academic year and 60 students from onwards. Separate hostel facilities are available with a warden and three deputy wardens. Separate departments of Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry, Animal Genetics, Animal Nutrition, Livestock Production and Management, Instructional Livestock Farm Complex and Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Public health, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics have been established. VC &RI, ORATHANADU Veterinary College and Research Institute, Thanjavur was established as a fourth constituent college of TANUVAS at Orathanadu in a total area of acres. After getting the VCI approval in 2012, 40 students are being admitted every year for B.V.Sc. & A.H. curriculum from the academic year and 60 students from onwards. Separate hostel facilities are available with a warden and three deputy 3

14 wardens. Facilities have been provided for indoor and outdoor games, computer centre with Wi-Fi connectivity, reading room, TV hall, washing machine and water heater for the benefit of hostel inmates. Separate National Service Scheme (NSS) unit and Red ribbon club unit is functioning at VCRI, Orathanadu since October A computer centre has been established to provide internet services for the benefit of students and staff. Computers in various departments are connected with LAN. Students are given free hands on training in Computer Applications. The College Library was established from the inception of the college. Books pertaining to UG curriculum are available in the library. Journals, Magazines and newspapers are available in the library. Facilities such as photo copying and internet browsing are available for student s use. COLLEGE OF FOOD AND DAIRY TECHNOLOGY College of Food and Dairy Technology, Koduvalli, Chennai was established in 1992, with the objective of preserving and processing surplus milk and food items of animal and vegetable origin. BTech (Food Technology), BTech (Dairy Technology), MTech (Food Technology) and PhD (Food Technology) courses are offered at this College. COLLEGE OF POULTRY PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT College of Poultry Production and Management was started in 2012 (as Institute of Poultry Production and Management and renamed as College of Poultry Production and Management in 2013) at Hosur, Krishnagiri District to offer academic programmes in poultry production and management and to undertake research and extension in the field of poultry husbandry. BTech (Poultry Production Technology) degree course is being offered at this College. 4

35 TANUVAS ACADEMIC RULES AND REGULATIONS In exercise of powers conferred under Section 48(2) of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Act 42 of 1989 (TANUVAS Act 42 of 1989) and clause 56 of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Statutes, the First Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, hereby made the following rules for proper functioning of the University in consultation with the Government of Tamil Nadu. These rules are subject to modifications from time to time by the Vice-Chancellor/Authorities of the University/State Government, subject to the provision that the rules are not inconsistent with the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Act, Statutes and Regulations. System of Education (Under-Graduate) The pattern of instruction in the University shall be the semester system for BVSc & AH, BTech (Food Technology), BTech (Poultry Production Technology) and BTech (Dairy Technology) degree course. Evaluation shall be semester examination for technology courses and Annual Board Examination for BVSc & AH, as per for VCI Regulations. The students will be governed by the Regulations which were in force at the time of admission till they are on the roll of the college. The Academic Regulations applicable to various batches of U.G. and P.G. are given in Regulations in clauses 31(a), 31(aa), 31(b) and 31(c). The details of the system of education, Registration, Course credit, Study load for semester, Attendance requirements, Eligibility to move to next year, Registration in the subsequent semester, Re-registration, Graduation requirements, Transfer of credit, Minimum GPA, Advisory Committee, Permissible credit load, Programme of study, Qualifying examination, Topic of Research, Matters related to examination, Revaluation, All India study tour, Clinical / Farm training / Intensive training and evaluation, Thesis submission and evaluation for PG approval and declaration of results, Classification of successful candidates, Award of degree etc. are to be referred in the Regulations, applicable to the relevant batch. 25

36 System of Education (Post-Graduate) The system of education is as prescribed in the Regulations for MVSc, MTech (FT), PhD (Veterinary and Animal Sciences), PhD (Food Technology), MPhil in Biotechnology, MSc in Bioinformatics, MSc in Biostatistics, MBA in Food and Livestock Business Management, PG Diploma in Bioinformatics, PG Diploma in Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosis and PG Diploma in Companion Animal Practice. The system of education is as detailed below: MVSc / MTech / MBA / PhD The pattern of instruction and evaluation is the semester course credit system. An enrolled student should complete the course and research credits prescribed from time to time and shall have to earn a minimum Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) of 6.5 out of 10.0 in order to earn a Post Graduate (MVSc / MTech / MBA / PhD degree). MPhil in Biotechnology The duration of course is one year comprising of two semesters. The pattern of instruction and evaluation is the semester course credit system. An enrolled student should complete the course work, seminar and dissertation credits prescribed from time to time, carry out research project in the area of Biotechnology and submit a project report for evaluation before the end of the second semester. To earn the MPhil in Biotechnology, a student shall have to secure a minimum Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) of 6.5 out of MSc in Bioinformatics and MSc in Biostatistics The pattern of instruction and evaluation is the semester course credit system of two year duration. An enrolled student should complete the course and research credits prescribed from time to time and shall have to earn a minimum Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) of 6.5.of 10.0 in order to earn MSc (Bioinformatics / Biostatistics) course. PG Diploma in Bioinformatics The duration of course is one year comprising of two semesters. The pattern of instruction and evaluation is the semester system. An enrolled student should complete the course work, seminar and dissertation credits 26

37 prescribed from time to time, carry out dissertation project in the area of bioinformatics and submit a project report for evaluation before the end of the second semester. PG Diploma in Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosis/ Companion Animal Practice The duration of the courses is one year comprising of two semesters. The pattern of instruction and evaluation is the semester course credit system. An enrolled student should complete the course work and dissertation credits prescribed from time to time, carry out research project in the area of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosis/ Companion Animal Practice/ and submit a project report for evaluation before the end of the second semester. Registration (a) (b) Undergraduate: The students including new entrants shall register the requisite courses in the beginning of each semester within seven working days, the first two working days without fine and the remaining five working days with a fine of Rs.100/-.The attendance will however be reckoned from the day the instruction commences as per the academic calendar (i.e.second day of registration week) first semester - first working day. Postgraduate: Each candidate shall register at the beginning of each semester within two working days from the date notified for registration. Late registration is permissible with the late registration fee of Rs.100/- for another period of 11 working days. Fees As per Statutes 38 (c) of the University, the fixation payment and receipt of the University fees shall be determined as and when necessary by the Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of the Academic Council. 45 Internal Evaluation BVSc & AH Degree Programme 1. Examination week: An exclusive examination week may be scheduled at the end of every semester and there shall not be any preparatory holiday for Internal Evaluation. The days in which examinations are conducted shall not be counted as working days. The theory examination will be conducted during morning hours and the practical examination during the last practical class of the semester. 2. Maximum marks: The maximum marks for theory shall be Examination schedule: The Deans of the colleges in consultation with each other draw the examination schedule and notify the same for the conduct of Internal Evaluation. 4. Duration of Internal Evaluation: The duration of the theory and practical examination shall be for three hours each separately. 5. Pattern of Internal Evaluation question paper: (a) (b) Internal theory examination In a question paper, 60% of marks shall be for objective type (Part A) and 40% shall be for subjective type (Part B). Each objective type question shall carry only 0.5 marks. Internal practical examination a.record - 10 marks b.practical - 30 marks c.viva-voce - 10 marks The practical mark obtained for 50 shall be converted to Attendance: The attendance eligibility applies only for Annual Board Examination and not for Internal Evaluation. The attendance particulars should be sent to the Head of Education cell / Co-ordinator of the academic year as the case may be within 3 working days after completion of each semester in the prescribed format. Mandatory 80% attendance eligibility should be checked for theory and practical separately on the basis of cumulative attendance of all courses grouped under a paper. 35

46 Annual Board Examination (ABE) 1. General: The ABE shall be conducted at the end of each academic year except in the fifth year, where the Board examination will be conducted at the end of ninth semester. 2. Examination week: The practical examination shall be conducted after completion of theory examination. The practical examination shall be conducted during morning hours and the viva-voce shall be conducted immediately after the completion of practical examination by batch rotation. The University may be intimated and permission obtained if any change in the schedule is required due to radical administrative reasons. 3. Maximum marks: The maximum marks for theory and practical shall be 60 and 40 respectively. 4. Duration of ABE: The duration of the theory examination shall be 3 hours and practical shall be 3 hours. 5. Pattern of ABE question paper: The pattern of question paper for ABE theory shall be as follows: (1) The question paper for ABE shall have two parts viz. Part A and Part B. a) Part A shall have objective type questions and each question will carry 0.5 mark. b) Part B shall have subjective type questions. (2) The following shall be the distribution of marks for Annual Board practical examination: For (2+1) a. Record - 5 marks b. Assignment - 5marks c. Practical - 20 mark to 20. d.
