Willing is not enough; we must do. -JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE MESSAGE FROM THE CEO It has been a busy summer and fall here at UMMC. We strive to be more efficient and effective than ever in delivering high-value health care and improving the health of the communities we serve. We recently earned national recognition for our excellent nurses, and for programs in stroke care and other areas. You ll begin to hear more about hospitals in Maryland and elsewhere in the country taking on the responsibility of population health. UMMC is a leader in time-sensitive critical care. However, we are also helping our patients to better manage after they are discharged. Our new van (see Page 7) takes UMMC community outreach staff on the road to provide screening, prevention and education programs in the community. A key to meeting the needs of our community is to provide the right care in the right setting, at the right cost. One of the best examples of this is the initiative undertaken by the Department of Orthopaedics to begin scheduling more of their patients for follow-up surgery at. You can read in this issue how that has provided patients the best of both words highly specialized trauma orthopaedic surgeons from our world-renowned Shock Trauma Center, in a patient-friendly community-hospital setting at. 2 2 UMMC Connections UMMC Connections is produced by the Office of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for the UMMC community. 22 South Greene Street Baltimore, Maryland Jeffrey A. Ray Vice President, Operations Mary Lynn Carver Senior Vice President Communications and Public Affairs Anne Haddad Editor and Publications Manager Merideth Marr Assistant Editor Denise Marino Director, Marketing & Communications Chris Lindsley Director, Communication Services Linda Praley Creative Director news and story ideas to UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND REHABILITATION NETWORK GROWS TO 20 SITES STRONG CONTINUED FROM FRONT COVER UMRN offers a full range of physical rehabilitation services, bringing together expert teams of committed care providers at facilities all across the state from community hospitals as well as a large academic medical center. All Network members are part of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), and rehabilitation professionals at all UMMS facilities work together to provide consistent and appropriate care at every stage of recovery. The Network offers patients flexibility, quality and access to a broad spectrum of expertise. With locations throughout Maryland, UMRN provides convenience and access to a wide range of specialized and unique rehabilitation programs, such as balance, aquatic (water) therapy and hand therapy. If UMMC Midtown Campus does not have a service that a patient requires, the staff will help the PATIENT SATISFACTION IMPROVES with ED Core Measures Initiative Earlier this year, launched an all-out effort to improve the patient care and service in the Emergency Department (ED), and the work has already yielded positive results. Through a process called performance improvement (PI), the initiative addressed specific goals based on core measures used nationwide to measure the safety and quality of health care. The goals were to meet or exceed those core measures on a consistent basis. Five teams of employees formed to focus on the new measures regarding patient flow specifically, the time that elapses at each stage of the patient s care from arrival, to decisions about care, and finally to sending them home or admitting them to the hospital. Each group was assigned to address a specific aspect of the ED Performance Initiative: ED Fast Track flow of less acute patients ED Patient Flow flow of high-priority patients in the main ED Midtown Patient Flow the process and flow after an ED patient is admitted Customer Service improving patient satisfaction scores Steering Committee overseeing all of the individual groups Additionally, several smaller workgroups were formed out of those five teams to focus on streamlining the triage process, improving patient find that service at another facility in the Network. The ability to be seen at multiple UMRN facilities within UMMS allows patients and their families to have peace of mind knowing that a coordinated team of experts is working together to make sure they receive the highest-quality rehabilitation services available, said Cynthia Kelleher, senior director of business development and marketing for the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute. Should a patient need to be transferred to another UMRN site for care, therapists at all of our 12 Network hospitals regularly communicate to make sure we have a warm handoff for the patient/family, and easy access to files, Kelleher said. Other benefits of this System collaboration include better quality of patient care, more effective care using an evidence-based approach to treatment, and standardization among clinical practices. Launched two years ago by Robert A. Chrencik, MBA, CPA, president and chief executive officer of the Medical System, and E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Network represents a robust, well-supported program among all UMMS hospitals. SERVICES OFFERED THROUGH THE NETWORK Additional services are offered in UMMS acute care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facilities and the discharge rounds on the inpatient units, updating the order sheets to make them more efficient and user-friendly, and creating a new program to help with patient flow: the Staff Without Territory (SWOT) Nurse program. The SWOT nurse is not assigned to any one unit; rather he/she is directed by the nursing supervisor to help out where needed. When a patient is admitted in the ED, the SWOT nurse helps with the ED report and hand-off, transports the patient to his or her inpatient room, and completes the admission assessment for the inpatient unit nurse. When there are no new admissions, a supervisor will direct SWOT nurses to whichever unit has the biggest need around the hospital. At this point it s too early to have data on the effect of the SWOT Nurse, but anecdotally, we ve heard wonderful things from the nursing supervisors, ED nurses and inpatient nurses, said Sara Dewese, RN, clinical manager of the Emergency Department. We hope that this program will be successful in helping to improve our patient flow throughout the hospital. IMPRESSIVE RESULTS Since the launch of the ED Performance Initiative, has seen impressive results in a variety of areas: An average of 11.8 minutes door-to-triage time less than the new target time Rehabilitation Services Offered at UMMC Midtown Campus, an important member of the University of Maryland Rehabilitation Network, offers these services: Physical therapy (manual therapy, spine rehabilitation, orthopaedics, pain management, treatment for vestibular dysfunction, therapy for joint replacements, therapy for neurologic conditions) Occupational therapy (hand and upper extremity therapy, splints, workplace ergonomic consultations, cognitive treatment to improve activities of daily living skills) Speech and language therapy (evaluation of swallowing issues and the risk of aspiration, improvement of speech, thinking and language skills) Just for Kids Rehabilitation Program (cognitive and physical rehabilitation for children ages 2 to 18) outpatient facilities. Rehabilitation services are available at home and at community sites, such as at the YMCA in Abingdon. SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT Depending on the location, patients can be seen within a week or two at a UMRN facility. However, if a patient has an urgent need to be seen more quickly, please call or the rehabilitation leadership at the desired site to make special arrangements. For a full list of Network locations and more information, visit or call to speak with a member of the Rehabilitation team. An increased number of ED visits An average bed-to-doctor time of 21.9 minutes less than the new target time of 30 minutes An increase in patient satisfaction scores An increase in sense of urgency scores We re hitting (and exceeding) many of our targets, said Dewese. Additionally, we ve had a noticeable decrease in the number of complaints regarding the wait times. Going forward, all of the teams will continue to meet and brainstorm additional interventions to improve flow. My hope is that employees and patients will be able to see obvious improvements to the time the patient arrives to the ED, to being seen by an ED doctor, to being admitted, and to going up to their inpatient room, Dewese said.

3 FALL COVER STORY CONTINUED THE RIGHT CARE, IN THE RIGHT SETTING at UMMC s Two Campuses Throughout the day, helicopters and ambulances bring the region s most critically ill and injured patients to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at UMMC s University Campus. In the past, it wasn t unusual for such cases to take precedence over a much more stable patient returning for follow-up orthopaedic surgery, such as removing hardware from a healed bone. Even if the patient was understanding of the situation, it was at the very least a large inconvenience that might have affected the patient s support network, family and job. We started looking for a solution to better serve our returning patients but still make sure that our operating rooms at Shock Trauma were available to those who needed them urgently after a car crash or other traumatic injury, said Andrew N. Pollak, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at the UM School of Medicine and chief of orthopaedics for UMMS. They found a solution one mile away at, which has newly renovated operating rooms nearly identical to those at University Campus in terms of technical capabilities, as well as an experienced perioperative and rehabilitation staff that could devote themselves to patients needing more routine surgeries. The upside for patients is small to zero chance of having a scheduled surgery bumped to another date or significantly delayed because of a crowded OR schedule. The ORs at have a more predictable schedule because emergency trauma cases and other major surgery cases go to the University Campus. Pollak and his staff decided that most of the attending physicians would rotate to UMMC Midtown Campus for their patients, rather than selecting only a few of the doctors to operate here. The patient has continuity of care the team that cared for the patient at the Shock Trauma Center follows that same patient and performs the follow-up surgery at, said Jo-Ann Mittelman, CRNP, the nurse practitioner who coordinates the cases that start at Shock Trauma and continue for follow up at UMMC Midtown Campus. I coordinate the transition of the patients care from Shock Trauma to to make sure the right types of cases are brought to our hospital, Mittelman said. To decide which cases can go to UMMC Midtown Campus, Mittelman reviews them with the orthopaedic surgery and anesthesiology teams. Other specialty areas, including the Department of Ophthalmology, have adopted or are looking to that successful model as they offer more services at UMMC Midtown Campus. UM ophthalmologists perform 80 percent of their surgeries at UMMC Midtown Campus. The advantages of the University Campus are obvious for patients who are very sick or severely injured: large multidisciplinary teams that are trained to care for these patients needing complex care. But is a community hospital that can efficiently focus resources on the less severe cases because that s what it specializes in. It brings together the best-case scenario for all patients: the right care, in the right setting, at the right time, and at a lower cost. A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE Earlier this summer, H. Jeffrey Schwartz, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and head of the Division of Gastroenterology, and Sara Dewese, RN, clinical manager of the Emergency Department, volunteered at Camp Oasis of West Virginia. Camp Oasis, sponsored by the Crohn s and Colitis Foundation, invites children ages 8 to 18 who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis, to join them for five days of relaxing fun without the worry of their illnesses. Schwartz served as the camp physician there in case of emergency or if any campers had gastrointestinal symptoms. Schwartz also led Cabin Chats, going to each cabin and talking to the campers about managing their conditions. This gave the kids an opportunity to ask questions that they might be embarrassed to ask their primary doctors or their parents, said Dewese. He really made the kids feel comfortable to ask anything they wanted. As one of the nurses at Camp Oasis, Dewese s role included distributing medications, patching bumps and bruises, curing homesickness and handing out popsicles. Dr. Schwartz approached me and asked if I wanted a chance to use my emergency nursing skills, give back to the community, and hang out with some awesome kids of course I jumped at the opportunity, she said. While every moment at camp was memorable, Dewese said it was a particular moment at the last night s campfire that she will always remember. One of the 9-year-old boys, who had been known as a prankster all week, stood up and sincerely said, My friends back home don t understand why I m sick from school so much or why I sometimes can t eat normal food. You all understand me, you re like my family. That was truly an awesome moment!

4 4 UMMC Connections Donald E. Ray THE R.I.T.E. TOUCH CAMPAIGN HEIGHTENS AWARENESS OF CORE VALUES UMMC MIDTOWN CAMPUS recently wrapped up a four-month internal campaign to boost staff morale and heighten the organization-wide focus on The R.I.T.E. Touch the hospital s core values of respect, integrity, teamwork and excellence, as well as the behaviors that exemplify those values. The R.I.T.E. Touch Campaign provided a further opportunity for employees to exercise the philosophy of serving patients and working together as a team. Launched in October 2008, The R.I.T.E. Touch serves as a platform for providing a high-quality patient experience at. Demonstrating the R.I.T.E. behaviors in all that we do in the workplace directly impacts our patients and helps to build their trust in us as their health care provider, said Donald E. Ray, vice president for operations at UMMC Midtown Campus and the executive leading The R.I.T.E. Touch. Whether helping out a fellow co-worker with a project, assisting patients or visitors who may appear lost, or tidying up around the hospital when something is out of place, employees are expected to demonstrate the core values characteristics every day while at UMMC Midtown Campus. During the campaign months (March June 2014), employees, managers and other staff were encouraged to pay special attention to and acknowledge any colleagues whom they witnessed displaying these behavioral expectations by awarding R.I.T.E. Touch Points to them on the spot. The points can be used to purchase goods online, such as exercise equipment, cooking gear and even vacations. In addition to on-the-spot recognition, each month of the campaign featured a R.I.T.E. Touch core value: March Respect April Integrity May Teamwork June Excellence To further drive home the monthly focus, employees were given the opportunity to win prizes and additional R.I.T.E. Touch Points by entering a drawing each month. In order to qualify, employees were required to identify and document behaviors that they believed exuded that month s focus. One great example is Teamwork first-place winner, Joe LeDoux, Ray said. LeDoux, a physical therapist, wrote, Teamwork is encouraging team morale, volunteering to assist co-workers, and practicing good communication. CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: More than 3 million R.I.T.E. Touch points were awarded during the campaign months. More than 1,100 monthly drawing entries were received from March through June. 12 raffle winners took home nearly $4,000 in prizes. Although the campaign is over, creating an environment where our patients and employees can thrive takes continuous effort and initiative from everyone at, Ray said. As Henry Ford said, Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. We ask that you stay dedicated to our core values of respect, integrity, teamwork and excellence, communicate openly and honestly with your colleagues, and believe in the importance of collaboration in order to achieve our common goal: to provide the highest-quality patient care possible, Ray said. Baltimore Orioles Honor Kate Sullivan as a Hospital Hero On n July 31, 2014, Kate Sullivan, execu- tive assistant, was named a Hospital Hero at the Baltimore Orioles game by the American Red Cross for her continuous efforts and commitment to increasing blood donations in Maryland. In addition to serving as the blood-drive coordinator at, Sullivan has personally donated blood five times per year for the past 17 years. Her donations have totaled 78 pints of blood (more than nine gallons), which has potentially helped save 234 lives. Her contributions don t stop there. For the past five years, Sullivan has also served as blood-drive coordinator for her church, St. Francis De Sales in Abingdon, MD. The American Red Cross is in desperate need of blood, and I feel that it is my duty to help where I can, Sullivan said. There is nothing scary about giving blood. It is a simple 30- to 45-minute process, and I encourage everyone who can give blood to give blood. Kate Sullivan (right) was among the American Red Cross blood donors honored at Camden Yards this season. She has donated a total of 78 pints of blood over nearly two decades. The Hospital Hero of the game is a partnership between the Baltimore Orioles, the American Red Cross and UMMC, in which UMMC was able to select a Hospital Hero for eight Orioles games per year. Those who are selected appear on the field in a pregame ceremony along with representatives of the Red Cross. They also receive two tickets to that night s game. Our hospital heroes all have a strong tie to our blood drives. Many, like Kate, are long-time donors and volunteers, while some have been patients who have benefitted from the blood collected at area Red Cross drives, said Chris Lindsley, director of communication services at UMMC, and UMMC blood-drive co-coordinator. We know how dedicated Kate is to the cause, and wanted to recognize her work as both a donor and organizer. Spanier, associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, is the newly appointed division head of general pediatrics at University of Maryland Medical Center, and medical director at UM Pediatrics at Midtown. Preventive care keeping kids healthy rather than only treating them when they re ill is the key to maintaining good health, Spanier said. Children are the future of our society, and if I can help them get a healthy start, that is a great advantage that they will have for the future, he said. Spanier came to UM Pediatrics at Midtown in July from Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.
