2 FORTHCOMING EXHIBITION Adaptation 3-26 June, 2016 Transition Gallery, London (UK) Private view 2 June, 6-8 p.m. With new works by Gerbrand Burger, Jackie Chettur and Matthew Richardson Gerbrand Burger is a visual artist from the Netherlands. He works with drawing, sculpture, installation, printmaking and film. Architecture and literature are the main domains that inform his work across various media. Literature was his first encounter with art, and has had a major impact on his work. While reading is the basis for constructing or deducing content, looking at architecture provides cues to possible forms. More often than not these forms are collected by noting them down as drawing first. Forms and narratives are taken apart and rearranged, to make up an intricate and personal visual language. A generous selection of Gerbrand Burger's drawing archive will published in his forthcoming artist book Part of someting, co-edited by Marc Nagtzaam and Stephan Keppel. 4 MOREL'S MUSEUM (2008) Morel's Museum is an installation that shows a 30 minute projected video loop, shot in the Dutch polder landscape to the north from Amsterdam. Morel's Museum brings together the highly planned and efficient polder landscape and the elusive world of The Invention of Morel, a magical-realist, fantastical science fiction novella by Argentinian writer Adolfo Bioy Casares. In the story a man, washed up on the shore of an island, discovers and falls in love with holograms of people, produced by a mysterious machine in a white building. Through a voice over, in Argentinian Spanish, we share the thoughts of a man wandering around the island, doubting his own sanity while slowly unraveling the wondrous fenomena he's confronted with. The video screen is mounted inside a model of a pumping station in a scale of 1:20. The actual pumping station is situated in the town of Medemblik, one of the shooting locations for the video. 5 MOREL'S MUSEUM (2008) The back of the model building is opened up, so the model functions as a frame around the screen, thus mediating between the video and the exhibition space. By merging Bioy Casares' story with the landscape and the pumping station, the practical and mundane reality of the Dutch polders becomes infused with the 'triumph of imagination over reality' of Argentinian fiction. 8 CONSTRUCTS (2014) The traditional technique of etching informs this series of unique works on paper. Separate parts of the image are prepared as copper etching plates, drypoint PVC matrices and digitally printed Japanese paper cutouts. The image is assembled and physically constructed in one press run. It's this time consuming and physical process and the fusion the age-old and the contemporary printing techniques that gives these works their defined form. The constituent shapes are examples from the large archive of drawings of which a selection is published in the forthcoming book 'Part of something'. Visual elements derived from architecture, marine navigation, literature, crafts and invention are taken out of their original context and merged to make up a subjective system of signs and symbols. 12 DALLAS (2011) For this 1,5 hour long monologue about the second half of the 20 th century in North America, Gerbrand Burger created a backdrop of a large video projection. In the video the Guggenheim Museum in New York is shown, filmed from a scale model in the studio. The video shows the changing light of one day, with the inevitable catastrophe at nighttime in the end. The white building of the Guggenheim and its fatal demise link to the text of the performer Marien Jongewaard, on different levels. 16 BOOK DRAWINGS (2012 ONGOING) The ongoing series of book drawings is an expression of the importance literature and books have for Gerbrand Burger's work. For him literature has been the first encounter with art, and he considers reading to be the most profound experience of imagination. Drawing these boks means spending time with them in a different way from reading them, in a more contemplative way, reflecting on the importance of the appearance and materiality of the book. The project entails the building of an expanding library, that shows, much like an actual library, the changing meaning and significance of the books over time, both for the artist and the viewer. 19 RIHLA (2009) This kaleidoscopic travelogue looks at one man's journey from east to west, measuring contemporary European society through centuries of oriental experience, recorded in the writing of Arab travelers. The voice-over is made as the inner monologue of a fictional character. This character is pieced together from numerous fragments of stories about Arabs traveling to the West. 23 REVERSE PERSPECTIVE (2012) The large white chalk drawing on the concrete floor shows an image of the exhibition space; a large industrial hall. The image is based on a photograph taken from the vantage point of a scale model of a military watchtower, similar to the ones that can be found along the Israeli-Egyptian border. In the installation the watchtower is overlooking the drawing on the floor, thus turning it into a politicized territory. As the viewer looks down from one specific point on the entresol in the exhibition space (depicted at the center of the chalk drawing), they will be standing at the place observed by the watchtower, from where the drawing on the floor appears standing straight up, corrected for perspective. 26 SEVEN MADMEN (2016) Seven Madmen is a series of seven unique works on paper, made with etching and the chine collé collage technique. The title refers to 'The seven madmen' and 'The flamethrowers', a novel in two parts, written in 1929 by Argentinian writer Roberto Arlt. The 'objects' depicted may have been bizarre inventions by the novel's main character, the gloomy and fatalist inventor Erdosain. The remarkably accurate vision of dark events of the 20 th century that Arlt shows in his writing, infuses these mental and physical constructions on paper. Elements taken from modernist architecture in Argentina are combined with inventions from the drawing archive that Gerbrand Burger has been working on since 2003, forming an idiosyncratic series of emblems.
