Sewer Cleaning 101 Water Systems, and Nozzle Selection Presented by Ken Billingham International Product Specialist KEG GMBH
Basics of Water Systems Positive Displacement Volumetric Water Pump Hose Reel and Hose Water Pressure Gauge Nozzle
Basics of Water Systems Positive Displacement Volumetric Water Pump Several different manufacturers and designs. Main purpose is to transform mechanical energy to hydraulic energy.
Basics of Water Systems Hose Reel and Hose Many different diameters and lengths of hose to choose from. Several different manufacturers and designs. Main purpose is to transfer energy from the truck to the nozzle.
Typical Sewer Cleaning Hose (Pressure loss per 1 foot of hose at designated flow) Hose Diameter Typical Maximum Operating Pressures Minimum Flow in GPM Maximum Flow in GPM.50 Hose 4,000 PSI >12 GPM (0.8) <=25 GPM (3.5).75 Hose 3,000 PSI >20 GPM (0.3) <=50 GPM (1.8) 1.0 Hose 3,000 PSI >30 GPM (.16) <=80 GPM (1.1) 1.25 Hose 2,000 PSI >60 GPM (0.22) <=125 GPM (0.9) 1.50 Hose 2,000 PSI >80 GPM (0.16) <= 180 GPM (0.75)
Basics of Water Systems Water Pressure Gauge Measures pressure in system At the truck. Main purpose is to provide information to the operator. Does not indicate what pressure is available at the end of the hose.
FLOW VERSUS PRESSURE In the pipe Flow moves material, pressure cleans and propels. In the hose Flow goes up, pressure goes down Flow goes down, pressure goes up.
Pressure drop comparison Based on PSI with 600 ft of 1 hose. Pressure at the end of the hose is PSI. A loss of PSI or almost 34% of the pressure generated. Available 62 F.H.P.(GPM X PSI / 1714)
Pressure drop comparison Based on PSI with 600 ft of 1 hose. Pressure at the end of the hose is PSI. A loss of PSI or a little more that 13% of the pressure generated. Available 57 F.H.P. (GPM X PSI / 1714)
Pressure drop comparison Based on PSI with 600 ft of 1 hose. Pressure at the end of the hose is PSI. A loss of PSI or a little more that 6% of the pressure generated. Available 38 F.H.P. (GPM X PSI / 1714)
Using your Horse Power Based on 600 ft. of 1 hose and 2000PSI GPM Engine PSI Hose FHP Hose Engine horsepower requirement is calculated (GPM x PSI / 1542) (Myers Pumps) Fluid horsepower is calculated using the following formula (GPM x PSI / 1714)
Basics of Water Systems Nozzle$ Redirects the flow of the water Pulls the sewer hose up the line Jets material back to evacuation point Front line soldier when cleaning any pipe Theselection and applicationof the correct nozzle will ensure a job done well and on budget.
Comparing Tier Designs NASSCO designated Tier 1, 2 and 3 Fluid mechanics at work
NOZZLE TIERS HOW TO PICK YOUR EQUIPMENT Tier I Basic Nozzle Disposable Drilled Orifices Poor Fluid Mechanics 30% efficiency rating Very common in the industry Lowest purchase price Most expensive to operate due to inefficient design
NOZZLE TIERS HOW TO PICK Tier II More Choices YOUR EQUIPMENT Higher First Cost More Durable due to replaceable Orifices Poor/Fair Fluid Mechanics 60% efficiency rating Most common upgrade in the industry
NOZZLE TIERS HOW TO PICK Tier III Yet More Choices YOUR EQUIPMENT Good/Excellent fluid mechanics Replaceable inserts Highest First Cost Highest Performance 80% efficiency rating Most cost effective nozzle design
Comparing Tier Designs NASSCO designated Tier 1, 2 and 3 Fluid mechanics at work The shape of the chamber is critical.
Common Tier 3 nozzle designs
Using your Horse Power Based on 600 ft. of 1 hose and 2000PSI GPM Engine Hose Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier
Using your Horse Power Based on 600 ft. of 1 hose and 2000PSI GPM Engine Hose Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier Fluid horse power is calculated using the following formula (GPM x PSI / 1714)
Using your Horse Power Based on 600ft. of 1 hose and 2000PSI GPM Engine Hose Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier Tier 1 assumes 30% efficient nozzle
Using your Horse Power Based on 600 ft. of 1 hose and 2000PSI GPM Engine Hose Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier Tier 1 assumes 30% efficient nozzle Tier 2 assumes 60% efficient nozzle
Using your Horse Power Based on 600 ft. of 1 hose and 600PSI GPM Engine Hose Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier Tier 1 assumes 30% efficient nozzle Tier 2 assumes 60% efficient nozzle Tier 3 assumes 80% efficient nozzle.
Using your Horse Power Based on 600 ft. of 1 hose and 2000PSI GPM Engine Hose Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier (60) (55) (50) (37) Tier 1 assumes 30% efficient nozzle Tier 2 assumes 65% efficient nozzle Tier 3 assumes 80% efficient nozzle Some nozzle manufacturers offer 98% efficient Tier 3 nozzles.
Benefits of reducing flow Less water consumption = fewer fill ups Possible fuel savings $$$$ Reduced maintenance costs More available pressure to clean better Reduced noise levels for operator Reduced heat generated from engine Improved safety environment Fewer Blown toilets Reduced S.S.O. events.
Speed of Nozzle As nozzle technology changes, the way we clean pipe must change as well. How fast should you send the nozzle upstream and how slow to be retrieved. 60 ft. per minute may seem slow but that is 1 ft. per sec. That is too fast if you are trying to clean pipe. Remember this is simply a pressure washer.
Changing Tiers of nozzles can change the way we clean pipe Tier I and II nozzles S.O.P. Shoot the nozzle up the pipe and clean as you come back.
Changing Tiers of nozzles can change the way we clean pipe Tier I and II nozzles S.O.P. Shoot the nozzle up the pipe and clean as you come back. If you were given a shovel and asked to dig a hole, would you dig it top down or bottom up??
Changing Tiers of nozzles can change the way we clean pipe Tier I and II nozzles Step Cleaning Requires cleaning the same length of pipe many times. To step clean a 300 foot run with 50 foot steps you will clean 1,050 linear feet of pipe. ( =1,050 ft.) Why would you want to pay to clean 3.5 times the length of the pipe??
Changing Tiers of nozzles can change the way we clean pipe Tier III nozzles In slow and out slow (Speed depends on conditions)
Changing Tiers of nozzles can change the way we clean pipe Tier III nozzles In slow and out slow (Speed depends on conditions) Upstream cleaning will remove the organic and suspended matter. Heavier debris will fall out of the stream.
Changing Tiers of nozzles can change the way we clean pipe Tier III nozzles In slow and out slow (Speed depends on conditions ) Upstream cleaning will remove the organic and suspended matter. Heavier debris will fall out of the stream. Downstream cleaning will give a second cleaning pass and remove all the heavier debris.
Types of Sewer Cleaning Tools Penetrating Cleaning Finishing/Polishing Large Diameter Tools Root/Scale and Hardened Material removal
