This leaflet gives you information on what we found during our visit and provides information on how you can help to reduce the risk of blockages.

Most of these blockages could have been avoided.

The damaging effects of sewer flooding. Northumbrian Water maintains and cares for the public sewerage network. The number of sewers for which we are responsible has increased considerably following the transfer of private drains and sewers on 1 October Customers continue to be responsible for internal pipework and some external drains. We all have a responsibility to ensure we treat our drains and sewers properly to avoid unnecessary blockages. Doing so will provide benefits to all by ensuring we have a sustainable and reliable sewerage service. The good news is that you can take some simple steps to avoid blockages. See pages 4 and 5 of this leaflet. Remember, you only have to flush the toilet or pull the plug out of your sink to have an effect on your private pipework as well as our sewers. Wipes and other debris left on the pavement after a manhole has overflowed. 3

Good news, it s not too late to stop blockages from occurring. We can all start now to make a difference by following these simple steps. The sewerage system is designed to handle used water, human waste and toilet paper: These items should NOT be flushed down the toilet: Nappies. Sanitary towels, panty liners and backing strips. Tampons and applicators. Cotton buds. Condoms. Facewipes and babywipes. Cleaning wipes. Incontinence pads. Razor blades. Medicines and tablets. Syringes and needles. Dental floss. Kitchen roll. Toilet roll inners. 4

Avoid flushing wet wipes, cleaning wipes, disposable nappies and incontinence pads down the toilet. Even items described as flushable or disposable, such as wipes, nappies or pads, don t break down in the sewerage system. They often become lodged in the pipes and mix with solidified fat, where they become hard and form obstructions and blockages. Think twice before pouring things down your plug hole. Fat and grease may be liquid in form when you pour them away, but they quickly cool and harden inside the sewer where they mix with other debris blocking the sewer. Correctly dispose of fat and grease by allowing them to cool before putting them in your bin. If fat remains in a liquid form when cool, pour it into an empty jar or container before placing it in your bin. Keep drainage grates on your property clear of leaves. This is especially important in the autumn months when trees shed their leaves. Chemicals, solvents, engine oil and paint should be taken to a local refuse site. If you are concerned about tree roots and debris within the sewers please contact us for help and advice. Drainage pipes, which lead from your home, are usually four inches in diameter (about the size of an orange), and can become blocked quickly. Blockages in these small pipes will stop the wastewater from leaving your home. This could mean you are unable to flush your toilet or drain your bath or sink. In a lot of cases, it can cause the water to come back into your property through your toilet and bathroom/kitchen sinks, causing a lot of damage to the inside of your home. The public sewers are larger as they take waste and rain water from a number of properties. Blockages on these sewers can have a devastating impact over a large area causing manholes to overflow, pollution to rivers and streams, as well as flooding pavements, roads, homes and businesses. 5

If you are concerned that there may be a blockage in the public sewer please let us know. We always recommend that you speak to one of our dedicated customer advisors by telephone to report a suspected blockage, sewer flooding problem or to discuss any concerns. We can often resolve these type of issues more quickly and accurately if we can discuss them in detail with you. To speak to one of our dedicated customer advisors please use the following contact numbers:- To report a blockage (24 Hours) To report sewer flooding (24 hours) Alternatively you can contact us by through our website at Or write to us at Northumbrian Water PO Box 200 Durham DH1 9WG 6

What we found on site Your options include: Additional comments: Contact your insurance company Contact your landlord/local authority Contact private drainage contractors Employ Northumbrian Water s private blockage clearance service... (This chargeable service is only available when our contractor is on site. We are not permitted to respond to private drainage blockage call outs). 7

We called today to investigate a reported problem on the public sewer. We have highlighted the outcome below. Tick A blockage on the public sewer has been cleared and no further work is required. A blockage on the public sewer has not been cleared. Further work is required and we will contact you by telephone to update you on this. Further investigation is needed. We will contact you by telephone to discuss this in more detail. Further clean up work is required and we will contact you by telephone to discuss this in more detail. We believed the problem was in the public sewer, but on clearing the blockage we have confirmed that the issue was in your private drain/sewer. If the problem occurs again in the location shown in the diagram on page 7, you will need to contact a private contractor or your landlord for help. A blockage on your private drain has not been cleared. You will need to contact your landlord or a private drainage contractor to make arrangements for the blockage to be cleared and provide them with the information we have supplied. The problem was caused by fat, oils, grease, wipes. Please refer to the simple step guidelines on page 4.
