AWADUKT Thermo the REHAU system for controlled ventilation The principle of the AWADUKT Thermo is based on exploiting the largely constant temperature of the ground (approx C at a depth of m) to pre-heat the fresh air. The sucked fresh air is pre-heated in winter and cooled in summer by an underground piping system. The system therefore not only helps to reduce energy consumption, but also creates a pleasant and healthy room climate. With AWADUKT Thermo, REHAU has developed the fi rst ground-air heat exchanger with an antimicrobial inner layer, which signifi cantly reduces germ growth and thereby substantially improves air quality in comparison with conventional systems. This fulfi ls the requirement to regard the conveyed air as a foodstuff (see VDI 6022 Page 1). Particles of silver in the inner pipe layer reduce the growth and distribution of bacteria and mould on the inner surface of the pipe. The antimicrobial effect of the inner pipe layer has been tested and confi rmed at the Fresenius Institute, Taunusstein, in compliance with ASTM Standard E2180. ENERGY EFFICIENCY The paradox: this situation can easily occur particularly in energy-effi cient, very well insulated buildings. Such buildings are particularly airtight and hardly permit natural exchange of air between the inside and the outside without regular, intermittent ventilation. However, valuable energy is lost when the windows are frequently opened. The signifi cance of fresh interior air is decisive in defending against disorders of the respiratory system and is particularly important for children and adolescents, who frequently suffer from allergies or high sensitivity. Example of operation in winter Warm and cosy in winter Even at a frosty outdoor temperature of 15 C, the temperature in the ground at a depth of m hardly falls below +7 C. Thus, the cold exterior air can be preheated with the ground-air heat exchanger to 0 to +2 C before it reaches the ventilation unit. You can substantially reduce your heating costs by this method. Integrated coarse and fi ne fi lters clean the air of soot particles, dust and pollen at the inlet. The permanent seals, high longitudinal rigidity and effi cient condensation discharge make AWADUKT Thermo pipes a long-term and clean solution. 3 Condensation discharge When the sucked air is cooled, condensation occurs inside the piping system. The condensation must be discharged in a controlled way to prevent germs and smells from forming, for example into an AWADUKT Thermo condensation colleting shaft. 4 Wall penetration A professionally installed wall penetration in the outside wall ensures the reliable entry of the pipe to the inside of the building. The hygienic air supply Fresh, clean air plays an important part particularly in schools and kindergartens. Pollen and dust are fi ltered out of the air in the inlet tower to prevent germs from disseminating in the building. Comprehensive consulting REHAU specialists with many years of experience in all fi elds of energy-effi cient construction advise you on the integration of an ground-air heat exchanger in your school or kindergarten In Waldmünchen in the province of Oberpfalz (Bavaria, Germany), energy effi ciency is heavily stressed in urban building. A part of this overall project is the fundamental energy-optimised refurbishment of the primary school, built in the 1960 s with new concepts for curtain walling and heating technology. The Bavarian State Ministry funded the rebuilding work with a sum of approx. 1.2 million Euros. With the Waldmünchen primary school, the initial concern was to reduce the energy requirement of the building and to cover this with a CO 2 -neutral energy supply. Also, improved air quality in the interior was to create optimum conditions for concentrated learning. A CO 2 -neutral heating and ventilation system was implemented, amongst other by installing an AWADUKT Thermo ground-air heat exchanger, which was fi tted upstream of the controlled ventilation system. The energy requirement of the building was reduced by more than two thirds by insulation measures and the installation of a new ventilation system. Hygienic fresh air improves the learning environment Window ventilation, unfavourable from the energy aspect, is made practically superfl uous by controlled ventilation. The AWADUKT Thermo system makes a decisive contribution to the supply of hygienic fresh air with its integrated fi lters in the inlet tower and antimicrobially coated piping. In summer 2007, the Waldmünchen primary school was extensively refurbished to plans made by Bruckmayer Chartered Engineers from Drachselsried by the Wagner Bau and Egon Mühlbauer companies. The pre-assembled AWADUKT Thermo manifold pipes (DN 500/250) were used for the fi rst time in this project and proved to be convincing throughout. 4 5

4 ZINZENDORF SCHOOLS KÖNIGSFELD NEW SCHOOL BUILT IN PASSIVE SOLAR HOUSE STANDARD NEISSEAUE NURSERY SCHOOL CLEAN AIR FOR THE YOUNGEST The design and project management for the Katharina von Gersdorf House were conducted by Ketterer Chartered Architects from Königsfeld, the work was executed by Hubert Storz Baugeschäft GmbH from Hardt. The registers were installed as Tichelmann system with AWADUKT Thermo pipes in size DN 200. The new Katharina von Gersdorf House of the Zinzendorf Schools in Königsfeld, Baden- Württemberg, serves as a new standard: the building was one of the fi rst schools in Germany constructed to the passive house standard. The German Environmental Trust (DBU) and the Ministry for the Environment of Baden-Württemberg promoted the project in the course of the Climate Protection Plus programme organised by KEA (Baden-Württemberg Climate Protection and Energy Agency). New rooms were to create an optimum learning environment with the lowest possible energy requirement. Energy losses by intermittent ventilation were to be avoided by controlled classroom ventilation. The heating and cooling were also to be executed exclusively with the air. Controlled ventilation with over 80% heat recovery and an upstream AWADUKT Thermo ground-air heat exchanger ensures a ventilation rate of at least 20 m 3 per person per hour in the classrooms. The sucked fresh air is pre-cooled or heated by AWADUKT Thermo antimicrobial. Pleasantly warmed fresh air prevails in the classrooms, which enters the rooms without draughts and almost silently. Noise and insects are kept out optimum conditions for long-term successful learning. Energy-effi cient to the last detail The solid construction with sand-lime brickwork and concrete achieves a high storage capacity which cuts the effects of extreme outdoor temperatures. The ground-air heat exchanger is a part of this overall concept that is to achieve a saving of over 920,000 kg of CO 2 over a period of 25 years in comparison with a conventional building. The construction of the new passive house style nursery school building in Neisseaue is a project sponsored jointly by the German and Polish states and has been in operation since 1st November Both the German Energy Agency (DENA) and the Energy Effi ciency Centre of Saxony (SAENA) provided funding for the building. Fresh air with the lowest possible germ count has high priority in facilities for the youngest. Only a limited area was available at the Neisseaue nursery school for a corresponding ventilation system. A system which can be adapted fl exibly to the local conditions was demanded. Due to its antimicrobial inner layer, AWADUKT Thermo is perfectly suitable for Neisseaue. Due to the wide range of fi ttings, it was possible to integrate the system in the available area without diffi culty. The air is pre-cleaned in a fi lter system in the inlet tower and the antimicrobial inner layer of the pipes contributes to clean air in all rooms. In winter, the exterior air, at temperatures down to 15 C, can be pre-heated to approx. 0 C with AWADUKT Thermo. In summer, it is cooled to approximately room temperature. Valued passive house know-how The many years of experience held by REHAU in passive house components helped in the planning process and equipped the nursery school with windows made of passive house-certified window profi les in addition to the ground-air heat exchanger AWADUKT Thermo by REHAU. The joint German-Polish project was planned by H&L Planungs- und Vertriebsgesellschaft mbh in Olbersdorf. The system was laid in size DN 400 by Erd- und Tiefbau Holtendorf of Markersdorf. 6 7

5 COMPETENCE BY EXPERIENCE PROVEN MANY TIMES With its positive contribution to hygiene, the ground-air heat exchanger AWADUKT Thermo is particularly suitable for use in child and adolescent facilities. However, it also ensures low energy consumption, optimum ventilation and a good climate in all other buildings wherever many people come together, as for example in conference centres or supermarkets. Haus des Sports, Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt The building, which was commissioned by the Württemberg State Sports Union and the Schwaben Gymnastics Union, is conceived to the passive house standard. The economical air conditioning system includes a REHAU ground-air heat exchanger which is installed upstream of the air conditioner. This not only provides a continuous supply of clean, fresh air, but also contributes signifi cantly to energy-saving. Tesco supermarket, Zdzieszowice (Poland) The investor Tesco Polska Sp. z o.o. constructed a supermarket in Zdzieszowice with a substantially lower energy requirement than in conventional supermarkets. Solar, wind and ground source heat energy are employed as natural sources of energy. The AWADUKT ground-air heat exchanger reduces the energy consumed for air conditioning and conveys hygienic fresh air into the sales rooms. In cooperation with the University of Posen, REHAU conducted a one-year research project at the Tesco supermarket in Zdzieszowice to verify the energy effi ciency of the ground-air heat exchanger. The energy concept will be used in the construction of further Tesco supermarkets.
