7 RAUGEO ground-source solutions various methods of extracting ground-source energy Ground-source heat pumps (GSHP) extract heat from the ground to use for space heating for both domestic and commercial applications. For every unit of energy you put in, you typically get 3-4 units of renewable energy from a ground source heat pump. The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) Phase 1 has been launched for commercial GSHPs and Phase 2 for residential installations is due in April The common methods to extract ground-source energy are below: Horizontal Collectors Ideal for large open areas, pipes are buried at 1.5m deep. PE-100 RC offers the additional benefit of no sand bed being required Helix Probes Designed for space-saving and cost-effective installations. Installed up to 5m deep, these 3m spiral probes are easy to install by a civil contractor. Each Helix is 40m of 25mm PE-Xa pipe. Thermal Piles Exploit the building s foundation piles by integrating PE-Xa pipe into steel pile cages. Vertical Probes Installed in boreholes up to 150m deep REHAU manufacture probes in both PE-Xa, PE-100 RC and PE 100 material. 5

8 RAUGEO click manifold innovative new click technology RAUGEO Click pre-assembled manifold RAUGEO Click push fitting In 2013, REHAU have launched their brand new RAUGEO Click manifold to meet the demanding requirements of a ground-source manifold. The manifold was designed to not only allow rapid installations on site but also provide significant technical advantages over alternative products on the market. The key to the manifold is the Click assembly, which allows a 12 port manifold to be assembled in minutes. The manifold can be built modularly (only 3 articles needed for each manifold) or can be purchased pre-assembled in 2-12 port variants, which have been pressure tested in the factory. The RAUGEO Click manifold can also be installed in the RAUGEO large manifold chamber, see page 9 for further details. The RAUGEO Click manifold offers the following benefits: Large 2 ½ internal diameter for low pressure losses Made of low conductivity GRP material compared to PE manifolds Fast assembly using the Click technology Flowmeters included as standard No corrosion risk due to polymer components No tools needed for pipe connections 20-50mm brine circuit connections and 2 header pipe connection possible The RAUGEO Click manifold can be used with PE- Xa, PE 100 and PE 100RC pipework. 6

9 RAUGEO pe-xa probes maximum reliability - bury and forget RAUGEO PE-Xa probes offer the highest reliability and reassurance for the client. REHAU are unique in offering a 10 year consequential loss warranty for every PE-Xa probe installed. Using cross-linked polyethylene (PE-Xa) provides the following advantages: PE-Xa probe tip has no welded joint which means no potential leakages Temperature resistance up to 95 C, therefore ideal for underground heat storage and ground-source cooling applications Resistant to point loads High resistance to notches and grooves during transport, handling and installation Improved bending radius (up to 2x better than PE 100) Probe tip protected by special GRP resin The renowned leakproof REHAU EVERLOC fitting is used with all REHAU PE-Xa pipes, including RAUGEO, and offers the highest operational reliability. 10 raugeo pe 100-rc the latest generation of ground-source probes & collectors RAUGEO PE-100RC Probe RAUGEO PE-100RC collector pipe RAUGEO PE-100 RC is the newest generation of pipe material. The improved mechanical properties of PE-100 RC has seen many European countries switch from PE 100 to PE-100 RC as their ground source pipework of choice. The UK GSHPA has already included PE-100 RC as a pipe material in their Vertical Borehole Standards and Thermal Pile standard and some of the major European GSHP manufacturers are now specifying only PE-100 RC being used on their heat pumps. Material specification: PE-100 RC stands for Polyethylene Resistant to Crack. These create an increased resistance to stress cracking and point loads (Full Notch Creep Test > 3,300h). All the other properties of PE-RC are the same as standard PE 100 (e.g. temperature resistance, requirement for welded connections). The key benefi t for GSHP installation is, thanks to the increased mechanical resistance, no sand bed is required for horizontal collectors, saving both the cost of the sand bed and the cost of removing the displaced material from site. Quality controlled: RAUGEO PE-100 RC probes are made in accordance with the SKZ HR3.26 probe standard, which is an externally monitored testing procedure and ensures the highest quality of workmanship on every probe. For traceability, the SKZ certifi cate is attached to every RAUGEO probe tip with the date of welding. RAUGEO PE-100 RC pipe is made in accordance to PAS 1075, the only recognised standard for RC pipework. Point loads can occur in boreholes 8

Depending on insulation and heat losses, the water temperature supplied to a screeded floor can be as low as 35 C. This means that Heat Pumps are able to work in their most energy efficient output range. It s under control. REHAU s underfloor heating systems achieve optimum performance through control via their intelligent controls system. This ensures that the heat source (boiler, heat pump etc.) is only called for when absolutely necessary and that an ideal room temperature is maintained. The system learns the temperature cycle of the building and applies that information, combined with measurements of outside air temperature to respond at the right time. 13 rehau awadukt thermo ground-air heat exchanger for low energy heating & cooling AWADUKT Thermo is a ground-air heat exchanger system for pre-heating and pre-cooling ventilation air, (also known as earth tubes). Ventilation air is drawn through underground pipes buried at a depth of 1.5m, which pre-cools the air in the summer and pre-heats it in winter, using the near constant temperature of the ground (7-13 C). The system has been extensively used across the UK in domestic and commercial projects, mainly in the self-build and the education sector. The system is ideally linked up with a mechanical ventilation unit with heat recovery (MVHR) to offer a full ventilation solution. Different domestic packages are available for different size properties.
