3 3rd Annual The challenge The cost of power for mines is a major challenge to their economic viability because of rising electricity and diesel fuel prices and energy shortfalls in key mining markets. Energy now accounts for percent of the operating costs for most mines. Rising production costs, global competition and the drive to improve overall environmental performance are motivating leading resource companies to reduce their costs and look to new solutions, such as renewables, as a means of making energy cost savings, increasing the energy security of their operations and achieving an overall improvement in environmental outcomes.
