Course-specific regulations The course is informed by the codes of conduct and professional standards of professional bodies such as follows:: The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Logistics and Supply Chain Management Society Association of Project Management Therefore, the students on the course will be expected to demonstrate the following behaviours: Abide by the Code of Conduct as stated in the University s Student Regulations; Work with professional integrity at all times; Self-manage and demonstrate good time management skills; Manage relationships using effective communication strategies to successfully engage with others; Be a respectful and listening manager/team player who is open to other s perspectives and evaluate ideas constructively and positively; 8

9 Be mindful of the ethical implications of activities through dialogue with peers, and adhere to professional ethical standards at all times; Be committed to continuing personal development (CPD) and promote the CPD ethic within the profession. With the focus on career management and lifelong learning, students will be made aware of the professional courses available, such as PRINCE2 and those offered by CILT and CIPS. Teaching, Learning and Assessment The teaching and learning is designed to support the University s Education Strategy: Personalised learning: Multiple strategies of learning are used to support students in achieving a rich learning experience. Multiple assessment strategies are used to support them through formative feedback and summative assessment. Students have opportunities to carry out self-reflection and to get feedback on their strengths and weaknesses to enhance learning. Curriculum: The design of the curriculum reflects the progressive learning requirement from semester 1 to semester 2 and 3. Semester 1 and 2 will include eight taught units covering the areas of logistics and supply chain business management, while semester 3 is the Dissertation Stage that includes the Business Research Methods and the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Project units. Students will get a detailed introduction to the course at induction and will be informed of the expectations of the course and the respective units. For all the units, students are informed of the learning outcomes and marking criteria before engaging in assessments. All the units will be supported by online learning technologies such as BREO to enhance their learning experience. Realistic learning: Relevant case studies will be provided to help students gain a better understanding of best practice in the area. Students will have the opportunity to interact with industrial practitioners through guest lecturers and site visits. In-class group discussions and role plays in various units will help students better engage in classes and gain collaborative learning experiences. Assessment: A range of assessment methods will be used throughout the course and students will be required to undertake a variety of assessments, including individual essays, reports, case study presentations, and examinations. The assessments are designed to test students knowledge and understanding of the subject matter, but also to demonstrate the range of skills identified in the section above. Students will also experience some formative assessment activities designed to support the development of their knowledge and skills. The purpose of such assessment is to enable them to monitor and improve their performance. For example, they will have the opportunity to discuss a report structure before completing the report, to present concepts/findings through presentations and receive feedback before producing a final report or presentation. In preparation for exams, they will have opportunity to attempt revision questions with guidance on how to address them with appropriate solutions. The assessment strategy underlines the course s concern with research and independent thinking, the ability to make informed decisions and communicate these under time pressure and, finally, the all-important skills of teamwork and oral communication of ideas. Written assessments will contribute to the students learning outcomes focusing on their ability to research and critically evaluate elements of the curriculum in depth. The assessments will normally allow them to use a variety of named sources to support their viewpoints, Time-constrained tests will be more cursory in nature, generally assessing awareness, understanding and application of elements of the curriculum. The significant weighting given to individual and group presentations stresses the primacy of team work and of effective oral communication based on research and creative, holistic thinking about organisational, media and stakeholder issues. 9

10 The end-of-unit examinations focus primarily on critical discussion of theory and current practice and provide the reassurance of guaranteed student authorship, which is a true measure of their own ability and understanding. The semester 3 will be the dissertation stage. The students will develop their research skills through lectures and workshops in the Business Research Methods unit. They will be introduced to various research methods, such as survey, interview, focus group, and action research, as well as various quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques. Through the final project - Logistics and Supply Chain Management Project, they will be able to apply some of these methods and techniques to carry out research independently. Through University membership of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) UK, students will be encouraged to make use of the professional body s resources including publications and to attend local networking events and conferences on the subjects related to the course. Additional Academic Information Peer-assisted learning (PAL) NA Initial Assessment Initial assessments are conducted in the following units in Semester 1: Operation Management (BSS007-6): The first assessment - a case study analysis, requires students to submit an interim piece of work a structured abstract in week 6. Logistics Management (BSS004-6): The first assessment requires students to give a short presentation in week 6 to show their progress with the assignment. The purpose of this initial assessment is to build students confidence about undertaking assessment tasks; to provide developmental feedback at an early stage; to enable the identification of any specialist or additional support that may be required. Improving students learning In order to better help students to understand how to learn at HE level and in the context of their course subject, at the outset of the course, librarians from the LRC, and tutors from the Language Centre will be invited to give lectures and hold workshops to support students skills in taking lecture notes, using learning resources, using on-line resources, etc. To further enhance students learning process, industrial tours are arranged for students on the course to visit local companies to see live logistics and supply chain management activities inside the organisations. The students also have opportunities to attend guest lectures on topics relevant to their course subject. In addition, students also have opportunities to attend industrial conferences and exhibitions in London or Birmingham. Academic Integrity Issues relating to academic integrity (referencing, plagiarism, etc.) are introduced to students during the course Induction week, and developed through the course to ensure that students understand how to write academically for assessment and other activities. These issues are first addressed during the course induction, followed by the unit introduction in the first week of teaching. In addition, relevant documents are uploaded on BREO for student reference. When a student s work is identified to have such issues as plagiarism or poor quality, one or more meetings with the individual will be held to offer further education and additional support. We believe that being on a postgraduate course is very much like working as a professional in an organisation. We therefore expect that students will behave like an employee whilst we endeavour to behave as their employer. This has a number of imperatives on students who are expected to: work with professional integrity at all times; ensure contact details are current; 10

11 attend all classes and inform staff promptly of any mitigating circumstances ; arrive on time for classes; work to sustain a culture of mutual respect; ensure that all assessed work is their own and correctly reference where material is taken from other sources; raise concerns promptly, through the appropriate channels. HEAR implementation Internationalisation This course is focused on the global environment of logistics and supply chain business management. In the process of teaching, our unit tutors will bear in mind the nature of internationalisation of the student population, and make an effort to cover topics and case studies comprehensible and applicable to students of all backgrounds. In addition, our collaborative learning approach also enables staff to utilise the international diversity of the students to enrich and internationalise the learning experience via professional conference-style learning environment. Sustainability The course has been designed to integrate the topic of sustainability. Taught units such as Logistics Management, Supply Chain Management, Sustainable Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Operations Management have covered various elements of sustainability. The students on the course will be well informed of the triple-bottom line (3BL) of sustainability. Section 4 - Administrative Information This section will be used as part of the approval and review process and peer academics are the target audience.
