2 Welcome to Tinkham Adult Education! We meet the educational needs of hundreds of students each semester. The Tinkham Center offers students High School Completion, English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, and GED Preparation courses. In addition, on site GED testing is offered periodically throughout the school year. Students in the program range in age from 16 and up. The Tinkham Adult Education Program offers four nine-week sessions. Classes will be available from 7:45 A.M. until 6:22 P.M., Monday-Thursday. No school on Fridays. The Adult Education Program was redesigned to meet your needs and to allow you to earn more credits faster. The staff at Tinkham includes ten certified teachers, three counselors, a secretary and paraprofessionals. The staff is caring and dedicated. They are committed to assisting you as you achieve your goals. Our school improvement team continues to implement the activities designed to improve our educational delivery. We are committed to providing strong educational programming relevant to student needs. Course offerings are being reviewed to align with the Michigan Merit Curriculum. We continue to work closely with the William D. Ford Career/Technical Center so our adult students have access to technical classes and the job placement services provided by the career Center. We look forward to the new school year. Timothy Dziobak, Director Mission Statement The mission of Wayne-Westland Adult/Community Education is to ensure the opportunity for each person to attain the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to become a contributing member in a changing technical society. Teaching will be directed and resources utilized to provide a quality educational program that challenges all to reach their highest academic, social, emotional, physical and cultural potential.

3 Points of Pride GED Class: Using multi media to teach curriculum GED Connection Content Instructional Video Content Instructional Workbooks Internet related web site for students to access outside of the classroom English Classes: Using Power Point program to: Help teach content Program used to create games for students to us as a supplemental study guide/strategy Seventy-six people graduated from Adult/Community Education with their diplomas. Eighty-seven people earned their GED certificates through May, 2007 Five graduates received scholarships in Adult Education students again participated in collecting food for the Goodfellows Holiday Food Basket collection. Students in art classes developed new showcases every month. Students are learning to use the Internet for research and most are computer literate. Students used computers and the smart board technology to enhance teaching in math and computer classes. Integrating basic internet searching techniques for all classes and advanced techniques for computer classes. The English class was busy writing original skits depicting social problems that teenagers encounter. Outside visits from other sources include: Schoolcraft College, U.S. Navy, Henry Ford Community College, U.S. Army and Wm. D. Ford Career Tech Center. The Communications class also had a guest speaker to discuss the history and culture of the Native Americans in the state of Michigan. Students participated in group activities during field day. In the computer class, students disassembled and reassembled computers.

4 Building Goals Goal 1: Students will attend and participate in class regularly. Goal 2: Students will improve reading ability, comprehension and communication skills. Goal 3: Students will improve computation and problem solving. Goal 4: Students will demonstrate the interpersonal skills needed as a member of the team. Parent-Teacher Conference Representation The Wayne-Westland Adult Education Program is an educational program for students 16 years old and older. Many of our students are parents themselves. We do not conduct formal Parent-Teacher Conferences; however, for our 16 year olds, teachers contact parents on an as needed basis. Parents of our year old students are required to be a part of the regular registration/intake process that occurs each semester. We always encourage parents of our students to be involved with their child s education. They are invited to our fall open house and a spring field event. Tinkham Adult Education Attendance % District Rates For % 95.25% 82.92% Graduation Retention Dropout The Wayne-Westland District graduation and dropout rates were not available at time of printing.

5 District Level School Improvement During the school year the Wayne-Westland Community School District continued the school improvement process in accordance with Public Acts 25, 335 and 339. The district mission statement guided the work of the District School Improvement Team. The District School Improvement Goals for were as follows: Goal 1: All Wayne-Westland students will increase their academic achievement in reading and writing (ELA) as defined by the Michigan Curriculum Framework (MCF) and Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs). Goal 2: All Wayne-Westland students will increase their academic achievement in mathematics as defined by the Michigan Curriculum Framework (MCF) and Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs). Goal 3: All Wayne-Westland students will increase their academic achievement in science as defined by the Michigan Curriculum Framework (MCF). Goal 4: All Wayne-Westland students will increase their academic achievement in social studies as defined in the Michigan Curriculum Framework (MCF) District Accreditation All seventeen elementary schools, four middle schools and four district high schools (two comprehensive high schools, a career-technical center, and an alternative high school) are fully accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA-CASI). All schools within the Wayne-Westland District are also accredited through the Michigan Accreditation Plan as indicated in the Education Yes! School Report Card. Core Curriculum The Wayne-Westland Community Schools Board of Education has adopted a K-12 curriculum in all content areas. Each curriculum reflects the Michigan Curriculum Framework. At the elementary and middle school levels, Mathematics and English Language Arts have been adjusted to address the Grade Level Content Expectations. Science and Social Studies will be modified once the Grade Level Content Expectations have been finalized. At the high school level, Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science courses have been adjusted to address High School Content Expectations. Social Studies will be modifed once the Grade Level Content Expectations have been finalized.

6 District Parent Involvement Extensive parent involvement is a hallmark of all Wayne-Westland Community Schools. Board policy is in place to support volunteers, parent organizations, and other parent and school partnerships. Parent support is a key component of every student s success. Parents and community volunteers help students at home and also support school events, special projects, and assist in classrooms. Parents and community members are encouraged to participate in school programs and activities. Parent organizations include PTA and PTO groups, parent advisory councils, and extra-curricular booster organizations. To promote communication between school and home, parents have access to all teachers through voice mail and . Highly Qualified Staff The Wayne-Westland Community School District is committed to making sure that all of its teachers are Highly Qualified in accordance with the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of Currently each of the District s teachers holds a valid State of Michigan teaching certificate, permit or vocational authorization valid for the position to which he or she is assigned. During the 2006/2007 school year, all of the District s 850+ teachers were teaching in their endorsed area. NCLB states that parents must be informed of their right to know a teacher s qualifications. According to information submitted to the Michigan Department of Education s Registry of Educational Personnel (REP), 100% of the District s high school, middle school and elementary teachers met the highly qualified standards for the courses and classes they taught for the 2006/2007 school year.
