1 The EBS Career Services Center Welcome to the EBS Career Code of Conduct. On the following pages, we would like to give you an introduction into all relevant aspects of your successful networking during your time at EBS Business School. The aim of this brochure is to give you a broad understanding of the activities of the Career Services Center (CSC), its events and our expectations towards you. We, as the CSC consist of Career Advisors and Consultants. You can find all necessary contact information on our website: CSC Activities Recruiting Events Throughout the year, we organize different events with our corporate partners. The format of such events may differ depending on the target group, recruiting company and field of the industry. Examples are workshops, on-campus interviews, company presentations and case studies. All of our events will be announced through our monthly newsletter and Facebook ( Sign-up usually is available via myebs ( or through an external website. While for some events, you may be able to simply sign up in order to participate; other formats will require a more extensive application including your CV or even a cover letter. Again, all individual information about the event will be communicated ahead of time through the CSC newsletter. You want to get a head start and get an idea about upcoming events? Take a look at our website ( or at myebs. Individual Counseling Sessions EBS Career Advisors provide guidance on how to apply for jobs. We check your application documents and help you to prepare for your job interview. CSC works closely with EBS Coaching department that offers one-to-one coaching sessions with experienced coaches, which can help you to clarify your career goals in advance of the job application phase. In cooperation with EBS Alumni Association your career advisors also help you to connect with EBS alumni. Counseling sessions can be booked through the myebs-tool ( Career Skills Workshops Both the Career Services Center and the EBS Alumni Association organize different workshops to prepare you for a successful job search. Examples are rhetoric and assessment center workshops as part of the alumni trainings and our Master Your Career, Successful Interviews and General CV/CL Training as part of the curriculum that is offered to EBS students. These workshops not only train self-marketing and networking skills, they also include job application and interview preparation, case study training as well as salary negotiation tips. The overall aim of the variety of career skills events we are hosting is to increase the employability of EBS students. Formats such as the Boost your Consulting Skills or How to become a Banker directly train skills and let students gain further knowledge that will be required in the job environment. 1
2 EBS Job Market und Resume Book Many firms are interested in recruiting EBS graduates and students. Therefore, there is a high demand to post different offers that are bundled in our e-career market. You can access and search this database via myebs ( and even create automatic search agent to stay tuned for new job offers in a certain field. Furthermore, many of our companies are interested in your CV. In order to serve this need, we have created the so-called Resume Book where EBS students from all programs and all semesters can enter their past experiences in an online resume that is, once published, available to our partner companies. Therefore, we kindly ask you to keep your profile up to date on myebs. ( Contact to EBS Alumni While the Career Services Center is the interlink to the corporate partners and recruiters, the EBS Alumni e.v. acts as the point of contact towards EBS Alumni. We highly recommend you to sign up for the membership (this is free while you are an EBS student) to take advantage of the numerous networking opportunities: Once you become a member, you will gain access to the EBS Alumni database, which will allow you to contact alumni. Furthermore, EBS Alumni organizes several skills workshops and networking events throughout the year. If you have any questions regarding the EBS Alumni e.v., you may contact Maura Dreher (Maura.Dreher@ebs-alumni.org). Career Documents During your studies at EBS, you will most likely apply at different companies for different reasons such as internships, trainee programs or direct entry. In general, no matter what you are applying for, companies will ask for the following documents: 1. Curriculum Vitae 2. Cover Letter 3. Certificates (e.g. semester report, GMAT scores etc.) Please hand-in each document which you are required to send with your application. On the following pages, we would like to give you an introduction for these documents, their formatting, use and set-up. As mentioned before, we are gladly supporting you in the process through our individual career counseling sessions. Curriculum Vitae and Cover Letter Your CV is the place to give the interviewer/recruiter a quick but good understanding of yourself, your past activities and focus areas. Therefore, please always use evidence to proof your skills. The CAR-Model is a quite effective method to structure your argument with underlying evidence. ( ntro%20week%20workshop%20aug2015.pdf) 2
3 Remember that the requirement for your CV vary greatly depending on the country where you are applying for and your field of interest. Therefore, many of you should have various CVs, depending on the location of your application. Furthermore, it makes sense to have one CV, but adapt it to the respective job/company in terms of focus areas. It should contain: Personal Data: name, first name, address, telephone, mobile phone, , date and place of birth, nationality, marital status Photo (professionally taken by a photographer, e.g. during the introduction week) watch out: photos are only used and customary in German-speaking regions; recommended photographers: and Professional experience: internships, education, grades, describe work areas (CAR- Model) Carefully worded (use active language, avoid spelling mistakes) Clearly laid out (use bullet points whenever possible) At the end of this Code of Conduct you will find some examples of CVs and Cover Letters. Networking Guide Networking is important! 75% of today s jobs are landed through networking. This should give you a clear understanding of the difference of your chances of success of a personal contact, possibly through a career event, versus a standard online application. Networking is the key to your successful career! You must understand this and remember it whenever you are attending career-related events. General Appearance Dresscode As usual, the best choice of dress code depends on the event and industry. Remember that smart casual is the minimum requirement for all events in order to professionally represent both yourself but also EBS as an institution. Are you unsure about the different dress codes? Manager Magazin provides a great overview of the different outfit definitions: Communication Similar to your dress code, there are certain expectations regarding your communication with professionals. This includes the verbal communication, especially at our career events, but also any kind of electronic communication. In short, you must keep it professional. If you are unsure about a wording and whether to go rather formal versus informal, we recommend you to take the safe road and use a formal formulation. In s, spelling matters very much and a lack of grammar skills would show both your weakness in the respective language but also a lack of respect towards the receiver. Keep in mind that inappropriate behavior does not only reflect badly on you bad also on the entire EBS community. 3
4 What are other things that you should be paying attention to: o Use a professional address: send mails from your myebs-account. o Set-up your account correctly; this includes the correct sender name that appears for the receiver (first name / last name). Send test mails to check. o Use a short and precise subject line. Don t generalize ( Job Candidate ) in order to avoid Spam-filters Verbal Communication: Stay focused and confident (but not arrogant). Avoid a constant hand in the pocket and remain eye contact often. Preparation: Learn more about the presenter and the company in order to be able to talk about the respective industry and show interest. Post-Event Communication: Imagine the situation that you have met a professional at one of the career events and want to follow-up on him/her. Keep in mind that it is much harder to ask for advice or support months after you have met while it is no problem when you had kept in touch. Therefore, we recommend that you quickly (24h to 48h after meeting) send a mail after such events and be thankful for the opportunity to met him / her and the event. Introduction: If you are being introduced to somebody, please also follow the 24h to 48h contact rule. If you are unsure about any communication with company representatives, please do not hesitate to ask for help. You can find the contact details at our website ( As usual in life, it is better to be safe than sorry. At the following pages you will find an example for CV and Cover Letter. 4
