1 Partnership Conference, 23 October 2015 Conference workshop Programme Workshop Leader Focus 1. The Catholic School: Distinctive yet inclusive. How everyone can identify and nurture Gospel values. 2. Emotional Health and Wellbeing Michael Cullinane Michael recently retired as Deputy Director of Education for the Southwark Diocese after twelve years of service. Prior to that, he has 30 years teaching experience, including 12 as headteacher of a Catholic secondary school. Janis Marsh Janis is a qualified Nurse, teacher and SENCO. She started work with the Health Education Link Service (HELS) ten years ago. Janis has worked as Head of HELS since HELS provide Personal and Social Health Education (PSHE) support in Lambeth to whole school communities, including pupils, parents and school staff. Can a Catholic school be distinctive and inclusive? This is an interactive workshop with paired and group discussion on discussing the views for and against the statement. Participants will work on identifying and nurturing Gospel values and how everyone in the school can do this, whatever their role, so helping make the Catholic school inclusive yet distinctive. Participants will explore practical strategies to promote emotional wellbeing. The workshop will include a brief presentation, group discussions and a mindfulness activity. 1

2 3. Introduction to Mindfulness for Adults and Children 4. Why do some young people offend? Aoife Jenkinson Aoife is an Educational and Child Psychologist working in Lambeth Educational Psychology Service. Prior to this role, she was a teacher in both mainstream and special primary schools. Aoife has been a practitioner of Mindfulness since In 2015 Aoife is working with schools in Lambeth to introduce Mindfulness for Children, a programme to address the emotional well-being and self-regulation skills of pupils in primary and secondary schools. Mark Creitzman Mark is an experienced professional in mediation and Restorative Justice (RJ). He has worked within the Youth Justice System for 15 years. Mark has been delivering training to youth justice workers, police officers, social workers and other relevant professionals for 12 years. Currently, Mark is a Practice Manager for RJ and Referral Orders at the Lambeth Youth Offending Service Participants will have an opportunity to learn about Mindfulness through a short practice. Research evidence on the benefits of practising mindfulness will be introduced, and ideas to bring mindfulness to your classroom will be shared. This will be an interactive session to listen to and share participants ideas about the issues around youth offending. 5. Using play to tackle child obesity 6. Using play to promote positive behaviour Greg Fidele - Sports Active Coaching Sports Active Coaching offers a new and innovative style of coaching in nurseries, primary and secondary schools, colleges, youth services. We have an emphasis on long-term learning, which enables children and young people to take away the fundamentals of each sport or activity and then build upon them. Trevor Meader - Sports Active Coaching Sports Active Coaching offers a new and innovative style of coaching in nurseries, primary and secondary schools, colleges, youth services. We have an emphasis on long-term learning, which enables children and young people to take away the fundamentals of each sport or activity and build upon them. This workshop will work around delivering activities which will enhance skills and confidence in delivering their own sessions. This workshop will give participants the tools to create activities using different equipment that the children will find fun and engaging, and will result in them coming back for more! During this workshop we will look at the theory behind why and how we praise positive behaviour. We will then work on different scenarios which may occur during play and how we can apply this practically. 2

Outstanding Practical Lessons Roddy Leith Roddy is a Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Ambassador and the e-safety lead within Lambeth Children s Services and regularly delivers training workshops and assemblies to parents and students about ways of staying safe in the online world. Michael Tarnoky Michael has worked as Director of the Lambeth Law Centre since Lauren Faith & Sandra Gordon Lauren and Sandra have delivered a range of CPD Twilight sessions at La Retraite Catholic Girls School on Outstanding Teaching and Feedback, as well as Literacy Across the Curriculum. A short ten minute video will be followed by a presentation on how young people use the internet (very different to how adults do!) and how parents and professionals can encourage young people how to stay safe online. I will use examples of incidents that have been referred to us resulting in safeguarding. The workshop will comprise, A brief overview of the new benefits system A few comments on likely impact How schools can signpost parents effectively to enable them to get expert advice and support. The workshop will include a range of group work activities and strategies, in which delegates will participate. Time is allocated for discussion of these and suggestions from group members. 10. Transformational Leadership Jacqueline Peart Jacqueline is the Founder and Director of Training with Purpose International Ltd (TWPI). She delivers inspirational and motivational programmes aimed at all levels within the organisation, from executive coaching to staff conferences. With over 20 years experience in the industry Jacqueline has gained a reputation for a fresh yet challenging delivery style that creates sustainable and practical results. Organisations and individuals instantly appreciate her warm, frank, honest, constructive feedback and delivery style. An interactive workshop that looks at the vision and development of leaders in and out of schools. 3

Using Action Research as a CPD Tool to Improve Teaching and Learning Donal Hale Currently, Donal is the Action Research and Teaching & Learning Coordinator at La Retraite Catholic Girls School.. Action Research began as a pilot programme at La Retraite and is now an integral part aspect of the school s CPD for teaching staff. Its primary purpose is to promote teacher led action based research, with the aim of improving Teaching and Learning across the school. Donal conducted educational research whilst studying for an MA Education in English. The workshop will introduce the idea of using Action Research in school and how it can be implemented as a highly effective CPD tool. The workshop will draw upon what La Retraite has already done in this area, and offering ways you can use Action Research to benefit your school. The session will broadly cover the following: What is Action Research and how can it benefit your school? A Case Study of How it Works: La Retraite RC Girls School Using Japanese Lesson Study to improve Pupils Learning Experiences The workshop will also be an opportunity to discuss, debate and allow time for you to reflect on how your school may use elements of Action Research to help with the CPD of staff and also consider how it can be used as a way to improve Teaching and Learning and ultimately improve pupil outcomes. 12. Developing interactive classroom resources using Smartboard Notebook. Michael Allan Currently, Michael is acting Assistant Head Teacher and Head of the Science department at La Retraite Catholic Girls School. Previously, he was an AST for science and worked as an ICTATC, specifically, with teachers to develop the use of specific technologies to enhance students learning experiences. The workshop is entirely hands on. It is an opportunity to explore the possibilities of the Smartboard Notebook software and take away not merely ideas of how to use this software in the classroom but, also, to develop a resource for immediate use. 4

Participatory ESOL: English for Action Dermot Bryers Dermot is founder and CEO of English for Action (EFA) and has ten years experience of delivering community-based ESOL classes and action for social change for adult migrants in London. He has published research into participatory approaches to adult language education with partners at the British Council, Leeds University and King s College London. As well as teaching, social action and research Dermot is responsible for teacher training at EFA and has delivered training sessions across the UK. This workshop explore the following questions: What is ESOL and why is it important? What is English for Action? What is different about participatory adult education? Why is this relevant to schools? Workshop participants will be invited to share their ideas through group discussion. Participants will use a participatory learning tool that they will be able to replicate in their own classes, presentations or meetings. 14. From darkness into Light 15. Helping Parents to Help their children (Parent Gym) Barry and Margaret Mizen (MBE) Barry and Margaret s son Jimmy was tragically murdered the day after his 16 th Birthday in May Since then Barry and Margaret have dedicated their lives to working for peace as part of Jimmy s legacy. They set up the charity in 2009 and alongside the charity are 2 very successful cafes employing young people and offering work experience. Sheerin Mahabir Sheerin has trained with Parent Gym to deliver and facilitate Positive Parenting Courses. She has led workshops and projects for parents and children in a variety of settings. Sheerin has also run training session for teachers. Margaret and Barry will share Jimmy s story and discuss how the charity has developed since Jimmy s death. How we have engaged with young people not only locally but nationally by visiting schools and confirmation groups. Our Safe Haven project is one of our main focuses and this will ensure our young people can feel safe when they are on the high streets and in the local community. This workshop will provide delegates with an introduction to the elements of positive parenting: How to talk to your children a positive way How to set rules and boundaries How to show your children you care Helping your kids to make friends How to help your child to learn and make the most of it. 5

Subject and Middle Leadership: Improvement, Monitoring and Accountability Chris Andrew Chris has a proven track record in teaching, with 20 years experience in 3 outstanding schools and 8 years as Deputy Head in 2 of the schools, Additionally, he is a registered Inspector for Ofsted, the author of Help with Homework Books, workshop leader at ResearchEd2015 and at Optimus National Primary Conference. He writes articles published in the TES. Identifying key elements in leading from the middle What do you want to happen? What is really happening? How do you know? What is the impact and what needs to change? 17. Lesson Observations Gayle Marshall 18. Higher Order Questioning 19. Presentation matters: consistency in high expectations of presentation and marking Gail is acting Deputy Headteacher at La Retraite Catholic Girls School and is an OFSTED inspector. Sam Lehmann, Sarah Stevens-Cox Sam is a Year 6 teacher at Corpus Christi Primary School, Upper KS2 Phase Group Leader, English Coordinator and a Lambeth Writing Moderator. He has a postgraduate degree in Educational Neuroscience. Sam is an avid follower of Professor Dylan William and Paul Black s work in Primary Education, and disconcertedly enthusiastic about data and assessment in schools! Sarah is a former solicitor who retrained as a teacher; she has taught in Years 2, 3 and 4 at Corpus Christi. Sinead Cole, Kate Smart Sinead and Kate are Assistant Headteachers at Corpus Christi Primary School, Sinead is also Maths Co-ordinator and Kate is SENCO. Developed school policies in September 2014 and implemented for the past academic year. Both policies have been incredibly effective and we are able to evidence their success. The workshop will provide the opportunity to: share best practice in undertaking lesson observations and learning walks; support staff to judge lessons consistently; develop staff confidence in lesson observation and feedback. This session will cover how reading is taught in primary schools, with a focus on the new curriculum and extending higher ability readers. We will discuss the transition to the demands of the KS3 curriculum, the importance of extension work for gifted pupils (especially with the absence of Level 6 examinations) and provide an update on teacher assessment and the moderation of English. The workshop will present our whole school policy on the presentation of our children s work and expectations for teachers marking. We will share our experiences of instilling high expectations for all and the impact this has on Learning Behaviours throughout the school. We will also focus on the response to marking from pupils and how this has greatly enhanced our formative assessment within school. 6

7 20. Capturing children s learning through observations (EYFS) Jenny Griffiths Jenny s career in education spans 21years, mainly across EYFSP and KS1. She is particularly Interested in observation and assessment and is an accredited EYFSP moderator for QCDA. Jenny has worked as: EYFSP moderator across three local authorities, including Lambeth; External Advisor for Quality Assurance programmes; completed training in ITERS. Worked as an Early Years Consultant for the past 12 years. Her key interests include developing the quality of the learning environment, planning through a core book, developing systems to support staff supervisions and appraisals and improving strategies to monitor quality. Jenny is a qualified Early Years Ofsted Inspector. This workshop is designed to help practitioners to understand the basic principles and techniques in observing children s learning. This workshop will also help practitioners to sharpen their skills in recording evidence and referencing entries in a away which is useful when analysing and assessing what children have learned. 21. Using questioning effectively to support children s learning Ludmilla Rajnath Ludmilla is a local authority Consultant for Early Years. She advises schools and private day nurseries. Also, Ludmilla delivers central training and runs training in schools and private day nurseries. She is a Freelance Ofsted Inspector for Early Years. The workshop will, Discuss the importance of using questioning to consolidate learning and to move children s learning on. Look at and discuss some of the types of questions to ask children open-ended and closed questions. Using questioning effectively to support small groups Using DVD footage/observations to reflect on good practice. 22. Attachment Theory Edyta Zjawiony Edyta is an enthusiastic and proactive Specialist in Special Education with 20 years of experience of teaching pupils with exceptionally complex and challenging needs. She is recognised as an outstanding practitioner within the internal monitoring cycle and external agencies, including OFSTED, SEN inspectors and key LA officials. Edyta has a proven track of advising, managing and leading people and for over a year she has been an effective trainer to professionals who want to become successful in teaching and supporting children and young adults with Autism. The workshop will help delegates to understand differences in behaviour associated with autism and explore strategies to support children and young people, including Understand the acting out cycle. Allow participants time to reflect on their own classroom practice in relation to pro-active classroom management. Explore tools such as ABC to analyse behaviour and think about solutions. To explore a range of positive strategies for use in the classroom. 7

8 23. New OFSTED framework Dr Pauline Watts Pauline is a School Improvement Adviser for a Lambeth Council. She has worked in a wide range of schools in local authorities across London, advising them on all aspects of school improvement. Pauline has considerable experience of working with school leaders to evaluate performance and plan for improvement using a range of school self-evaluation activities. She is an accredited Ofsted Inspector. Pauline was a Headteacher and National Leader of Education at a highly successful primary school in outer London. Pauline gained her doctorate in Educational Leadership in Her particular areas of expertise are supporting school self-evaluation, teaching and learning and leadership and management. The workshop will provide delegates with an overview of the new OFSTED framework and the inspection process. 24. Kitchen table science for Primary Schools Ann Smith, Aimee Mckeon, Patrick Burke Ann is senior technician at Bishop Thomas Grant School and has been recognised nationally for her practise and contribution to the profession. Aimee is Science Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator at the school and is a contributor to the TES magazine. Patrick is a teacher of Chemistry and supports a number of out of school clubs, including Year 7 Science club, Year 8 STEM club and the school s eco-committee. The aim of the workshop is threefold To facilitate science teaching in partner primary schools To help pupil transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 To foster links between the BTG s Science department and partnership primary schools. The workshop will be informal in structure with opportunities for delegates to participate in hands-on kitchen table science activities relevant to the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Participants will gain new ideas for practical work and a deeper understanding of the concepts that underpin them. 8

Raising attainment of the most able learners in your school Suzanne Poole Suzanne has been the Gifted and Talented Coordinator at Bishop Thomas Grant for almost 4 years and has contributed to the significant improvement in outcomes for this group of pupils. The workshop will explore the following Planning and delivering a whole school programme for Most Able pupils What OFSTED says about the Most Able Strategies to encourage higher level learning in the Most Able Sources of help and support external agencies and organisations. 26. Accelerating progress in the English classroom 27. Framing responses promoting literacy through discussion in the classroom Tilly Brown Tilly has taught English from Key Stages 3 to 5, as well as Year 6 booster and Key Stage 2-3 transition classes. She is an examiner for AQA and CIE and is leader of a Teach First English Subject Network. Tilly teaches at the Bishop Thomas Grant School. Laura McAdam Laura has been teaching English for 7 years. She is experienced in planning and delivering whole school INSET. Laura has taught English as Second Language to adults abroad. She is a teacher at the Bishop Thomas Grant School. The workshop responds to the needs of the new English curriculum by starting with the premise that pupils of all ages and abilities can engage with and respond critically to texts. The workshop will propose a taxonomy for teaching Literature that accelerates to a higher level of analysis in the first part of a lesson. It will also outline and model approaches to teaching literature, and stories, through a critical lens. The workshop is suitable for those teaching more able pupils in Years 5 and 6 as well as Secondary English teachers. The workshop will include the following A short introduction to the Philosophy for Children model Practice of discussion using P4C strategies An introduction how to integrate discursive markers in classroom debate in order to promote higher order responses. 9
