1. Introduction The Denver Museum of Nature and History (DMNS) is the largest natural history museum in the western United States and is one of the nation s premier natural history institutions. The museum s primary mission is to educate and interpret the natural sciences of anthropology, geology, health sciences paleontology, space sciences and zoology. It is responsible for the safe keeping of over one-million unique natural heritage items including one of the world s largest Native American spiritual artifact and Colorado gem collections. DMNS has the responsibility for safeguarding the building, its occupants and unique collections from a number of damaging actions and events including fire. Many of the artifacts may be permanently harmed and irrecoverable if they are damaged by fire and/or extensive quantities of fire suppression water. The museum has extensive fire safety program consisting of professional security and facilities personnel who administer and ongoing fire prevention effort. The building has a number of fire resistance elements for fire compartmentalization, automatic fire detection and alarm to identify a fire and notify emergency personnel during its earliest phase and fire sprinklers within a large portion of the complex. Sprinklers were installed in all contemporary sections when they were constructed and/or upgraded, but as was common practice when the original building was built, most of the original structure is not sprinklered. The museum is proceeding with a program to extend protection to the currently unsprinklered portions of the building and after extensive evaluation has determined that high pressure water mist fire sprinklers are most appropriate for protecting the resource, minimizing residual damage to the collections from fire and the fire control process. DMNS has obtained approval for an Administrative Modification as per Denver Building Code 2008, Section Alternative Materials, Design and Methods of Construction. This allows water mist fire sprinklers for all spaces that house and display the museum s artifact collections, including dioramas, spaces behind dioramas, vaults, and collections sorting/work spaces within the currently non-sprinklered parts of the building. Under this administrative modification mist sprinklers will be installed in all spaces where collections are housed for storage and conservation, and those spaces where they are for public display. 2: System Description 2.1: General Information This submittal package contains information on a Marioff high pressure water mist system that will be installed at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. The system is Factory Mutual (FM) Approved for this application and has been accepted by Administrative Modification from the City of Denver Fire Department. As per the Administrative Modification where ceiling heights exceed the 5 meter (16.4 feet) height of the FM listing the system will comply with the approval test data from the Scientific and Technical Centre for Building (CSTB-France), International Maritime Organization (IMO) or the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT).

The Marioff system for this project consists of an electric driven SPU pump assembly (pump and filter skid), MCC motor control center (pump controller), automatic transfer switch (ATS), sprinkler heads, zone control valves (pre-action function), control valves, drain valves, inspector s test valves, pressure switches for monitoring, and high-pressure stainless steel pipe & fitting delivery system as depicted on the project drawings. Water for the system will be provided by the building s existing fire water supply. The system will be arranged with fourteen (14) independent pre-action zones. This system will be monitored by the building fire alarm system which will be submitted under another contract. The fire alarm system will monitor/control various valve tamper switches, pressure switches, preaction solenoids and several outputs from the SPU-6+2 and MCC. 2.2: Marioff SPU-6+2 Pump Skid Hydraulic demand for each zone will require approximately 300 lpm (79gpm) flow which can be achieved with a Marioff SPU-6 pump skid assembly. However the Museum has undergone a number of additions and changes through the years and future expansion of the fire suppression system may be a possibility. If an expansion requires a higher flow then a supplemental SPU-2 can be added. However rather than provide two pumps the decision has been made to install at this time an SPU 6+2 which integrates both into a single unit, thereby saving space. The SPU-6+2 will consist of eight 480V, 3 Phase, 27kW electric motors driving sixteen high pressure pumps. The total skid unit is capable of producing approximately 790 lpm ( 208 gpm) and can produce a maximum pressure of 140 bar ( 2030 PSI). The SPU assembly includes a filter skid component that is intended to provide a higher level of water filtration thereby maintaining the desired clean water sprinkler discharge onto artifacts and collections. The filter is designed to The filter skid consists of two independent filter banks with motor driven valves that are each capable of delivering 500 lpm (132 gpm) for a total maximum flow of 1,000 lpm (264 gpm). These motors are designed to replace water that is drawn from the pump break tank and will operate as the tank level lowers. One filter is capable of meeting the flow demand and the unit conforms to United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) 10-6 operational reliability which places it as a suitable component for nuclear reactor protection. 2.3: Sprinklers The number and type of sprinklers will be minimal to simplify the project and avoid long term maintenance confusion and will utilize the following sprinklers: Part Number Product Code Max Spacing Max Height Maximum Protected Area K Factor Description C61510/0 C20-57C/0 5.0 m (16.4') 5 m (16.4') 25 m² 4.1 lpm / (268 ft 2) bar 0.5 Sprinkler - 57C (135F) - Closed Head - Ceiling 4.0 m 10 m 16 m² 4.1 lpm / Sprinkler - 57C (135F) - Closed C61550/0 C30-57C/0 (13.2 ) (32.0 ) (172 ft²) bar 0.5 Head - Ceiling While unexpected at this time alternate approved sprinklers may be utilized for specific conditions such as higher ambient temperature areas.

2.4: Valves The system will feature control, zone releasing (pre-action), inspector s test, drain valves and monitoring air shut-off valves for each of the fourteen zones. Drain valves will be arranged to permit drain down of a single zone for maintenance purposes without disabling the entire system. Drains will be piped to the SPU pump room and drain. 2.5: Tubing & Fittings All high pressure water mist will be delivered through stainless steel AISI 316L welded stainless steel tubing and stainless steel fittings. Sizes will range from 12 mm to 38 mm (approximate inch). Sizes have been finalized using the Darcy-Weisbach calculation method as per National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 750 Water Mist Fire Protection. 2.6: Air Compressor The system will feature an air compressor to maintain tubing system pressure downstream of the zone releasing/pre-action valves to approximately 2.75 bar (40 psi). This provides supervisory and integrity monitoring of the system when in stand-by (normal non-emergency) conditions. 2.7: Sequence of Operation Normal stand-by pressure in the water mist tubing system downstream of pump skid will be approximately 25 bar (362 psi). Normal pressure at water source feeding pump skid will be bar at 340 lpm (50 90 psi) at 90 gpm. A. If there is a loss of stand-by in the water mist tubing system downstream of the pump skid to the preaction valves to approximately 20 bar (290 psi), or other system specific set value, the GPU jockey pump will operate and continue to function until pressure is restored to approximately 25 bar. It is not uncommon for the jockey pump to operate from time to time to keep stand-by pressure at 25 bar. B. If there is a loss of monitoring air pressure in the tubing downstream of the respective zone pre-action valve to approximately 2.1 bar (30 psi) the air compressor switches on and pumps this section of the system back up to approximately 2.75 bar (40 psi). C. If a sprinkler head opens 1. Loss of pressure will cause jockey pump to operate and will be detected by a pressure switch at the GPU which then starts the first pump motor at approximately 17 bar (246 psi) for approximately 10 seconds. Motor 1 will operate until system outlet pressure at the most remote open sprinkler head is achieved (approximately 80 bar/1,160 psi). The corresponding motor controller(s) will display motor and pressure status. Motor 1 can also be manually started at the MCC.

2. An alarm relay on the system controller will function to activate the building s fire alarm system and create an alarm mode. 3. The pump running relay on PLC will transfer. 4. Low system stand-by pressure relay on PLC will transfer. D. If additional sprinkler heads open and one motor cannot achieve and the required sprinkler operating pressure Motor 2 will start. If condition will continue if subsequent sprinklers open to create a condition that requires additional pressure and flow demand. Similar to Motor 1, subsequent required motors can be started manually. E. Initial sprinkler water will be provided by the break tank that is a part of the SPU assembly. As water is drawn down within the break tank a low level switch will function to operate a solenoid supply valve on the filter bank assembly to refill the break tank. When the break tank water level is restored a high level switch will function to shut off the inlet flow. If the solenoid supply valve fails the water supply is opened to full flow to supply the system, with residual water discharged to drain. F. If the required sprinkler water flow (i.e. fire control with 1 or 2 operating sprinklers) is less than the constant output of a respective pump an unloader valve will operate to route the residual water back into the break tank. All motors can also be manually stopped at MCC. G. If a system trouble or supervisory condition occurs with the SPU including break tank low water, low inlet water pressure, loss of pump power, low monitoring air pressure, etc., the respective trouble/supervisory relay on the system PLC will operate to produce a trouble signal on the fire alarm system. Zone field devices including valve tamper switches, zone low air pressure switches, and zone flow switches will initiate the appropriate trouble or fire condition on the building fire alarm system. 3. Occupancy Description and Performance Objectives The museum complex was constructed in multiple phases with three distinct construction periods of , , and 1987 to present. The original building construction is Type III as defined by the International Building Code (IBC) and the later sections are Type I and II. The majority of floor areas used for display and interpretation of museum collections and defined as Group A-3 with other areas consisting of office/work areas (Group B) and collections storage (Groups S-1 and S-2). The exposures for this building are adjacent compartments within the museum. There are not any exposure buildings within several hundred feet of this building. Descriptions of the protected spaces follows.

SPU 7+1 is designed for Marine applications and it will run up to 7 pump modules, one module being a redundancy module. Mechanically both units are identical and the unit functionality is defined by the Control Panel design. Description The SPU 7+1 and 8 models consist of eight pump modules. Each module consists of an electric motor running via gearbox two high pressure pumps to produce the high pressure water flow needed in the sprinkler system in the case of a fire accident. The pressure produced by pumps can be adjusted from 80 bar to 140 bar respectively, according to the application. The pump modules are started sequentially, thus reducing the electric power peak loads. In stand-by position, the system pressure is maintained at 25 bar by means of the pneumatic stand-by pump. The pump unit can be started automatically or manually. Automatic start is activated by either the flow signal or the pressure signal. Manual start can be launched either from the external release panel or from the Starter Cabinet, switching on the pump modules one by one. External release and indication panel is normally included in the Marioff supply. The system start signal can also be given by the fire detection system (FDS) via the external panel.
