2 Second Sunday of Advent Page 2 Unconditionally Pro-Life, Pro-Family Second Sunday of Advent December 6, 2015 God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low. Baruch 5:7 Reflections by Fr. Carlos The first Sunday of Advent looks to the final coming of Jesus in glory at the end of time. The second and third Advent Sundays look to Jesus first coming and feature John the Baptist as the first to announce Jesus ministry. Luke introduces John with a list of all the political and religious leaders of the time. All these leaders hold power and will reject Jesus, but God s call is greater than any opposition. John s message speaks to us as much as it did to the people of his time: Make a straight way for the one who is to come. Change your life and your attitude. Make room for the Lord in your heart and in your life. I encourage all parishioners to take advantage of the sacrament of Reconciliation during the season of Advent. By forgiveness and being reconciled to the Lord Jesus, we will be ready to welcome him when He comes. We will have a number of penance services the week before Christmas, with Sacred Heart on Dec 18th at 7:00PM. This week we are honoring Our Lady. On Tuesday is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception where Mary is conceived without sin so she would be able to be the Mother of God. We also celebrate today and next Saturday Our Lady of Guadalupe where Mary called all of us her children. May our heavenly Mother pray for us! ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE Be Reconciled to God and to One Another Come and join your sisters and brothers and be reconciled to God and to one another at one of the following Penance Services to prepare to celebrate the joy of the Birth of the Messiah at Christmas. With these words today's Gospel describes the mission of John the Baptist. His message was clear: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." The Church in today s world many times has become the "voice crying out in the desert". At times in the desert of a world that seeks its salvation in things that often only offer a cheap imitation of salvation to just leave the heart empty. A voice that sometimes you do not want to hear as it happened to John the Baptist. The center of the message of John is to prepare the heart for the Savior who was to come. The central message of the Church today is to prepare the way of the Savior who lives among us. The word "prepare" in this passage means "remove". Remove everything deep within my being that does not help me receive the Lord. Things that do not help me to receive the Lord in my heart are for example hatred, resentments, envy, gossip, lack of charity, etc. What do I have to remove from my heart to prepare the way of the Lord this Christmas? God bless your week. 3 December 6, 2015 Page 3 Youth Ministry News O come, o come Emanuel this is a phrase we will be hearing a lot over the next couple of weeks as we venture through this advent season. Emanuel is a name that refers to Jesus but why didn t they just say O come, o come Jesus? Is it because it just didn t sound good in a song? Well first you have to look at the meaning of the word Emanuel which means God is with us. So even from the beginning, we new that God was within the form of Jesus. This is a staple of our faith as Catholics because we believe in the trinity and part of that trinity is Jesus. So what would have happened if Jesus was not God? This is what we talked about this past week in our year one class. If Jesus was just another prophet and not God, how would things be different? Its amazing how intricate out faith is and how if one little thing was different our entire faith could be completely different than what it is now. God has a plan for everything and whether we realize it or not he is constantly working in our lives, even in the little things. God had a plan in the beginning and was precise about what he did and because of that we are where we are today. UPCOMING Next Confirmation I class - Dec 2 Next Confrimation II class - Dec 9 Confirmation II Retreat- Dec RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS Next Sunday, December 13th, envelopes will be available at all Masses at the end of the pews for those who wish to contribute to the Retirement Fund For Religious. On December 9th, the first trimester mission focus on The Archdiocese of Los Angeles Adopt a Family Program ends with Teddy Bear Day. We send hundreds of stuffed animals, lots of collected candy, and the money raised through various events to Los Angeles with Monsignor Terry Fleming. This year we added lots of cereal boxes to our donation when we learned how popular they are with the many families who receive boxes from Adopt-a-Family. Our 8 th grade students went to The Cathedral during this school week to assist in the preparation of those boxes filled with items donated by schools and churches throughout the Archdiocese. During Advent, the students and staff meet weekly as 8 th grade students lead us in prayer. Students in kindergarten, first, and second grade are practicing for the annual Christmas Program under the direction of Mrs. Elaine Lyle, and every class will have a Christmas party before we leave for the two-week school vacation celebrating Christmas and the New Year!

5 December 6, 2015 Page 5 MISA DEL MEDIODIA, 12 P.M. Ministerio Hispano... 7 & 8:30 AM, 7 PM Bilingüe Servicio de Penitencia de Adviento 18 de diciembre a las 7PM SANTA CLARA PARISH PRESENTS A Christmas Concert Featuring International singer TAJCI December 11, 2015 at 7pm Tickets can be purchased at our Parish Center Office at 323 S.
