1 International Tobacco Control Workshop March 24 26, 2015 Ankara, Turkey Workshop Background and Objectives Turkey has become a regional leader in tobacco control and is the first country in the world to fully implement all five WHO MPOWER measures to protect people from tobacco smoke. A ban on smoking in all indoor workplaces and public spaces; a comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship; and graphic warning labels are some of the key measures that have been introduced. Thus far, preliminary evidence suggests that these measures have been successful in reducing smoking prevalence, secondhand smoke exposure, and related health and economic costs. Turkey also hosted the European Conference on Tobacco or Health in March The workshop objectives are to support research capacity in tobacco control in Turkey and the neighboring region while building greater collaboration among U.S., Turkish, and regional tobacco control specialists and government representatives. The agenda addresses current research activities in Turkey; research gaps and needs in Turkey and the region; tobacco research funding mechanisms, including NCI/NIH and other agencies; 50 years of progress in tobacco control in the United States; experience from U.S.-funded investigators in capacity-building and international research; and a discussion of recommendations for collaborative research activities.
