5 What is innovation? The term innovation means a new way of doing something. It may refer to incremental, radical, and revolutionary changes in thinking, products, processes, or organizations The goal of innovation is positive change, to make someone or something better

17 Child Friendly Case Plans Maryborough and Beenleigh CSSCs Engaging children in the case planning process FGM Convenors work with child to develop plan with pictures and symbols that are of meaning to the child. Can be achieved with children of all ages
18 Improving safety at home Community based agency Brisbane North. Offering First Aid Certificate course attendance for parents engaged with the program Improved self esteem for parents Improved safety for children at home as parents can respond effectively.
19 AO5 Intake Trials Trial to recruit suitably qualified staff during a skills shortage. Innovative recruitment model. Trial in Atherton and Mackay. Recognising the skill sets of other professionals who may not currently have social and/or behavioural sciences qualifications.
20 Group Contact Forest Lake and Inala CSSC s Contact is undertaken in a neutral, supervised setting external to the Service Centre. Participation in group activities is encouraged and supported. Playgroup Australia brought their Sing and Grow project to group contact every Thursday for 10 weeks. Feedback from participants is encouraged. Topics discussed include; parenting techniques, nutrition, hygiene, parent child relationships through play, the importance of consistency.
21 Practice Panels Redlands and Mt Gravatt CSSC s Children are referred according to need and complexity. Attended by CSSO, CSO and members of Management Team. Good, child focussed decision making practices are highlighted and used as learning tools. Also provides an opportunity for management teams to model robust respectful discussions. Used to facilitate decisions at critical points in child protection continuum (e.g. statutory intervention types, reunification and transition from care).
22 Fly in Fly out Senior Practitioner Emerald CSSC Managing a vacant Senior Practitioner position for 18 months. Idea of fly in fly out role adopted from the mining industry. One week in Emerald, two weeks in Brisbane plus four two week periods per year in Emerald for completion of core SP duties such as training. When evaluated, this trial received overwhelming positive support from the service centre and resulted in better outcomes for children. This initiative involved partnerships between the Case Review Unit, HR and the Training and Specialist Support Branch of the Department of Child Safety.

24 Small Group Exercise Nine topic areas Transition from Care; Learning and Development; Career progression; Case Planning; Engaging with children and young people; Family contact; Partnerships; Joint decision making; Human Resources and career planning Please locate the topic signs and move to the group you are most interested in. In the group you will have 15 minutes to collate as many innovative ideas you can come up with related to that topic area. Feel free to share your own stories or things you have heard other people are doing. We will then collect the information and type this information up and out after the Conference including information about the programs we have discussed earlier today. Our aim is to get 101 Innovative ideas by the end of the session. We have 12 already so only 89 to go. That is only ten ideas we need per group. Lets see how we go.
