1 What is CCI and are there profession-specific intervention codes? The Canadian Classification of Health Interventions, referred to as CCI, was developed by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). It is a comprehensive list of codes for diagnostic, therapeutic, and support interventions. Are there different codes for different professions? No. One of the key features of the classification is its provider and setting neutrality. The same codes are applicable regardless of whether a doctor, a nurse or a therapist performs the interventions, or whether the intervention is performed in a hospital, a clinic, a doctor s office or in the home. CCI and HCAI HCAI will only recognize valid CCI codes and on June 1, 2015, those codes will reflect the 2015 version of CCI Error! Bookmark not defined.. In many cases it will be important for users of HCAI to learn how to use the HCAI search code utility to locate valid CCI codes. Without valid CCI codes, HCAI users will be unable to submit forms to automobile insurers. CCI Code Structure Section (position 1) The Section Code represents the broad category or type of intervention. It allows you to quickly differentiate between assessments, treatments (both physical and non-physical) and other healthcare services. Section Code Section Description 1 Therapeutic interventions(physical/physiological) 2 Diagnostic interventions (Assessments, Tests) 3 Diagnostic imaging 6 Therapeutic (Cognitive, Psychosocial, Sensory) 7 Other (Healthcare, Services, Support) Group (position 2-3) The Group Code indicates what was affected. For those interventions related to physical anatomy (Section Codes 1, 2, and 3), the group code represents the body region or body part affected. For cognitive, psychosocial, sensory interventions, and other health care services (Section Codes 6 and 7), the group code indicates the specific skill, sense, or activity involved in the intervention. Intervention (position 4-5) The Intervention Code indicates what was done. A unique set of intervention codes exists for each Section Code. These first 5 positions form the base CCI code and are mandatory Approach/Technique/Reason (position 6-7) The Technique or Reason Code indicates how or why the intervention was done. Generally, this level of detail is not required for automobile insurers. Exceptions include the following: 7.SE.02.AB Assessment of environment (private living space, includes: Home assessment) 7.SE.02.AW Assessment of environment (workplace, includes: Ergonomic and Workplace assessments) 7.SJ.30.LB Documentation, support activity (for claim form)

2 Attributes Appendix B Partial Pick List of Health Related In addition to the CCI code, healthcare services can be further specified with Attribute Codes. These codes are used to indicate how the service was delivered or the number of views in an X- ray study. The absence of attribute codes means that a service was rendered directly ( in person ), to one individual by an individual provider, and required continuous attendance. Any exceptions to this must include the valid attribute code. Refer to tables below to determine which attribute codes apply to specific interventions. In many cases where one provider is in attendance with one patient, there is no attribute code required. For Section 1 only, the following additional Attribute Codes apply: Code IA* Description Intermittent Attendance For Section 1, 6, and 7, the following Attribute Codes apply: Code IN SD IM GR GS Description Indirect (e.g. telephone) Self-directed (e.g. using tapes, videos) Individual with more than one provider Group with one provider Group with more than one provider For Section 3, the following Attribute Codes apply: Code A B C D Description 2 or less views 3 to 4 views 5 to 6 views More than 6 views 2
