Executive Diploma in General Management and Healthcare [ExD-GMH] 2012 : Admission Brochure In the past few decades XLRI has been grooming fresh graduates in Business Management and Human Resource Management to shoulder the responsibilities of the corporate manager with integrity, dedication, loyalty and effectiveness. Simultaneously, the institute has also been in the forefront for upgrading of existing management practices by imparting theoretical and practical inputs to executives through Consultancy, Incompany Programmes and Management Development Programmes. In the recent past, another training aspect of the health care sector has been brought to the attention of XLRI : the need for in-depth and long duration training programmes for midcareerists wishing transition into the health care management. This includes doctors, nurses and health care professionals who wish to take up higher administrative responsibilities. It is with these objectives in mind that we have designed and implemented a One-Year General Management Programme for Apollo hospitals during 2010 through Satellite Mode. Realizing the positive impact of this programme on the participants, coupled with full appreciation of the Apollo Group, we are embarking on a new initiative in the form of a One-Year Executive Diploma in General Management and Healthcare, a Residential Programme at XLRI Jamshedpur. The programme has been designed and developed jointly by renowned faculty of XLRI Jamshedpur as well as the Apollo Group. The programme s objective is to provide competency-based education to eligible candidates with a view to promoting Health Care Management. In this programme, executives from various sectors will get an opportunity to familiarize themselves with an in-depth knowledge of the latest in management education, besides enabling them to interact with participants from different work cultures and personal experiences. 3 The need of the hour: EXECUTIVE DIPLOMA IN GENERAL MANAGEMENT & HEALTHCARE The need for professionally trained hospital managers is being increasingly felt in Indian hospitals, whether private or public. This is largely due to growing recognition that performance levels of hospitals in various managerial and functional areas are falling short of standards that are known to be achievable. As per CII report, employment in healthcare is expected to increase by at least 2.5 million by The rule of thumb being four healthcare managers per hospital, around 2000 hospitals will need 8000 such people over the next few years, whereas the existing institutes produce less than 400 healthcare managers a year. It is therefore imperative that top business school profiles should also come into healthcare delivery system for supporting the growing industry and improve Healthcare service delivery. 5 About XLRI History XLRI was founded in 1949 by Fr Quinn Enright, S.J. in the Steel City of Jamshedpur. Fr. Enright visualized XLRI to be a partner in the liberation and development journey of the independent India with a vision of "renewing the face of the earth". Fr Bill Tome joined hands with him to bring that vision to fruition. Both, together with the other Jesuit companions, worked tirelessly towards translating the Vision "Renewing the face of the earth" into action. Over many years XLRI has developed its own identity. The hall mark of this identity is, not to walk on the beaten path but to strike new routes; not to benchmark but to be benchmarked, to be second to none but to be the first to respond to the needs of the people and the nation, by taking up the tasks which are bold but necessary which nobody has hitherto taken up. This enterprising and pioneering spirit can be witnessed throughout the history of XLRI. Facilities Being one of the premier management schools of the country, XLRI endeavors at providing best quality infrastructure and facilities which mainly include Sir Jehangir Ghandhi Library, IT Infrastructure, and Sports & Recreation. Sir Jehangir Ghandhi Library The Library of XLRI came into existence in 1949 when the Institute was established in the Steel City of Jamshedpur, Bihar. It was named after late Sir Jehangir Ghandy in February The aim of the Library is to serve the needs of our faculty, Research Scholars, Students and other Members of the Library. It is the heart of the institution and acts as a center for the collection of literature predominantly related to management and its allied subjects and develops a comprehensive collection of information that is useful for teaching and reference purpose. The Library Provides Personalized Short range and long range reference services for it's users and it has a collection of 63,358 Books, e-books, Bound Volumes of Periodicals, 266 Foreign Journals, 175 Indian Journals, Project Reports and Dissertations, 26 Theses, 14 News Papers (Daily), 590 Video Cassettes, 1450 CD-ROM & DVDs, 500 Company Annual Report, 5000 Government Publications and 19 Online Databases, Documentation Service The Library Provides Bibliographies, Reading Lists, CAS, and SDI Services etc in anticipation or on Request. Reprographic Service Xerox counter on ground floor of the Library caters to the need of the readers. The Library has high speed Canon Electronic Photocopier machine. Reprints of Articles Reprints of articles that are not available in the Library can be procured from other libraries on request. The Library has national and regional union catalogues of periodicals compiled by INSDOC for reference. Apart from this, the Library supplies articles from CD-ROM databases and forms our own library collection. Current Content Service Page 6

7 The Library circulates Current Pages" of journals subscribed by other libraries like IIM's, ISI, etc., amongst the faculty members of the Institute and fulfills the articles request through procurement on resource sharing basis The Library is open for 24 hours and students can make ample use of the library. Library cards are issued to all students for issuing books and other materials from the library. IT Infrastructure The computing resources at XLRI include latest servers and workstations, a state-of-the-art campus network and 90 MBPS raw bandwidth WAN connectivity. There are high-end servers, which host the XLRI web page, Mail and SNTP server, Oracle, Lotus notes, SAS, DB2 and other software. Apart from value added learning of different packages, access to various database, electronic journal and software, XLRI is providing Web hosted SAP solution for hands on ERP. XLRI has GIGABIT Fiber backbone throughout the campus to support the Institute s local area network. Every hostel / MDP room has round the clock access to intranet as well as internet. Entire academic activities such as e-bulletin board, e-discussion forum, grades and feedback, on line leave application, course outline, electives, handouts, class schedule are made available to the faculty, students and the administration on their desktop. Apart from the individual nodes, more than 200 units of latest Pentium workstation, scanners, laser printers or desk jet printers, close circuit camera, multimedia projectors, digital camera to serve the desk need of faculty, student s computer centre, classrooms, examination hall, auditorium, library and various administrative offices. The institute also has its own video conferencing facility through dedicated ISDN lines Extra curricular activities The Institute offers a wide scope for extra-curricular activities, like sports and games, film club, music room facility, debating forum, quiz contests, dramatics etc. All these activities are organized and managed by students. 8 Sports & Recreation S. C. Sarkar Gymnasium Sports are taken seriously at XL. The fields/courts on campus include Badminton, Basket Ball, Cricket, Football, Tennis and Volley Ball. There is a multi gymnasium located in the campus. Indoor sports facilities are available in the students' residences. Admission Notice XLRI Jamshedpur invites applications from eligible candidates for admission into its first batch of one year Executive Diploma in General Management and Healthcare. The salient features of the Programme and the procedure of admission are indicated below. Programme Objective improving the professional competence of participants in different areas of management and health care. developing a general management perspective with special reference to a comprehensive understanding of the health care. helping the participants develop appropriate attitudes to transit into next level of their career either into the health care or in health care management. XLRI and Apollo have designed the One-Year Postgraduate Programme to help Discover & Learn the language, concepts, frameworks, tools and techniques of the corporate world of health care management, Adopt the wealth of expertise, experience and education that you bring from your earlier career to internalize the competencies that you acquire from this programme, Identify a suitable organization or Promote themselves to the next level for a successful career. 9 Curriculum Programme, covering conceptual and operational aspects related to execution of health care management ventures consists 750 contact hours and 200 hours of project work and internship. The details of the curriculum and the number of contact hours may be modified if and when such modification is considered necessary for making the Programme operationally more efficacious. Course Content There will be 28 courses taught in one year divided in to four terms. The first three terms will have 23 courses. Each term will consist of five to seven courses. Structure of the programme Programme will consist of four terms and each term will consist about 5-7 courses, to cover 28 courses. Page 9

10 Contact hours : General Management by XLRI faculty (about 480 hours) and health & healthcare management by Apollo (about 270 hours). Internship : With Apollo group of hospitals and other major hospitals in India. Project work : With Apollo group, National / International hospitals. International hospitals project placement will be purely on students request as they will bear the cost. (Not included in the fees structure.) Viva-Voce : On final internship and project work. Graduation ceremony : During April Certification : Jointly by XLRI and Apollo. Pedagogy The modus operandi to be adopted for achieving the above objective will consist of: (i) Class lectures, which may draw upon Indian and global cases wherever necessary, (ii) Individual and group assignments, (iii) Project formulation exercise carried out under the mentorship of a faculty member. Assessment, Evaluation & Certification Method of assessment and evaluation of performance of candidates in a course will be decided by the faculty member conducting the respective course. On successful completion of the Programme and based on the overall performance across courses, the Certificate in Executive Diploma in General Management and Healthcare jointly by XLRI Jamshedpur and Apollo Group to the eligible candidates. Faculty for the Programme The courses included in the Programme will be conducted jointly by Apollo and XLRI's faculty known for their research and/or hands-on professional experience in relevant areas and disciplines. Guest Lecturers from the industry/profession may be invited in certain cases to sharpen the focus of the Centre on bringing inputs from the ground to bear on the Programme. Eligibility To be eligible to apply for admission into the Programme, the candidates should be graduates from any recognized University, have minimum three years of work experience after graduation, Page 10

11 possess basic computer literacy, although no age bar has been stipulated, it is expected that the candidates applying for ExD-GMH are physically and mentally fit to go through rigor of the programme, eligible applicants will be subject to a process of written test and personal interview and, if necessary, group discussion for final selection of candidates for admission into the programme. admission test will be conducted at selected centers (seven) of Apollo on Sunday, November 27, Fees Fees and other charges will be approximately ` 8,90,000 which includes cost of study materials, stay and food in XLRI campus. Fees can be paid in four installments. Admission Procedure The Admission process involves the following: The application form to apply for ExD-GMH is available only online at The candidate has to first register for GMH ID and use the GMH ID and password to apply. Once the candidate logs on to this site, a set of instructions will appear guiding the candidates to register for admission to ExD-GMH. The last date for Online Registration is Monday, October 17, The completed application form along with a Demand Draft for 1655/- (Rupees One thousand six hundred and fifty-five only) drawn in favour of XLRI Jamshedpur payable at Jamshedpur should reach XLRI within October 21, Name of the candidate and Login ID (GMHID) are required to be mentioned on reverse of the Demand Draft. The envelope, in which the hard copy of the completed Application is sent to XLRI Jamshedpur, should be super scribed with Application for admission: ExD-GMH Proof of educational qualifications, work experience etc. are not required to be enclosed with the Application. These will be verified at the time of Interview /Group Discussions and admission.
