Introduction The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) campus, part of the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN), on Woodville Road, Woodville South, has a substantial research base, with a large number of University Department and Hospital Unit research arms forming the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research (BHI). Through its teaching and research affiliation with the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and Flinders University of South Australia, TQEH provides valuable basic and clinical research training opportunities at its site. Well-equipped laboratories in its brand new research facility and an active postgraduate student population provide a stimulating environment for further studies. The Hospital Research Foundation/TQEH Department Postgraduate Research Scholarship scheme is part of a wider Scholarship program at TQEH, oversighted by the BHI Policy Committee. It is made possible through the valuable support of The Hospital Research Foundation or individual TQEH Departments. 2. Description The Scholarship scheme is an application-based, competitive program that enables postgraduate students with research promise to undertake a higher degree at an institution of higher education. Subject to certain conditions, Masters degree candidates may study for a maximum of two years, and PhD candidates for three years. The requirements, conditions and benefits contained in this Advice apply to students commencing in Funding The Hospital Research Foundation/TQEH Department Postgraduate Research Scholarships 2014 A number of full scholarships will be available in Stipend payments Full Scholarships New stipend rates come into effect for all new and continuing full award holders on 1 January each year. The Hospital Research Foundation Postgraduate/TQEH Department Research Scholarship holders will: receive a stipend in the vicinity of $24,653 (2013 rate) be exempt from taxation under Section 23(z) of the Income Assessment Act 1936; and have their stipend payments indexed annually. Depending on the scholarship awarded, the stipend will be paid in one of two ways, either: monthly by TQEH Finance Accounting Services, and in advance, into a bank account nominated by the student, unless University of Adelaide Divisional Scholarship arrangements apply, or fortnightly through the University of Adelaide Graduate Centre In the event that a student accepts another full scholarship, having already accepted one under The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Postgraduate Research Scholarship program, the student must AdvicetoApplic_2014 second call.doc Page 2 of 6

3 notify the Research Secretariat in writing of his/her intention to relinquish the scholarship and repay any amount paid by TQEH. 3. Eligibility 3.1 Applicant eligibility To be eligible under The Hospital Research Foundation/TQEH Department Postgraduate Research Scholarship scheme, applicants must meet citizenship, residency and academic criteria as detailed at Appendix I. Applicants are ineligible if they: have completed a degree at the same, or higher level; are receiving another equivalent award, scholarship or salary to undertake the proposed study (an equivalent stipend would be regarded as one greater than 75% of the base The Hospital Research Foundation/TQEH Department Postgraduate Research Scholarship stipend rate). 4. Application Process The call for applications and processing is conducted by the Research Secretariat, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital campus. 4.1 Application procedure In the call for applications, the Research Secretariat will make relevant information available to applicants, including Application forms and Referee Report forms Submission Process The full electronic version of the application, including all required documentation, must be ed to: gwenda.graves@health.sa.gov.au by the closing date. The original signed hard copy application form and other required documentation must be completed and submitted to the Research Secretariat (DX465101), Ground Floor, The Institute, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, 28 Woodville Road, WOODVILLE SOUTH SA 5011 by the closing date Referee Reports The two Referee Report forms constitute part of the basis of assessment of scholarship applicants, and the template should be distributed by the applicant to each of their chosen referees. It is the applicant s responsibility to ensure the confidential referee reports are returned directly to the Research Secretariat by the closing date Thursday, 23 January Faxing to: is acceptable Applicant Photograph A head and shoulders photo is required prior to submission of scholarship application. The photo will be taken by Mr Basil Popowycz, Clinical Photography Unit TQEH. There is no charge to the prospective student for this service. The Clinical Photography office is located in the basement of the Main Building TQEH, entry is via a lift located adjacent to Outpatients Area 4 on the ground floor of the Main Building TQEH. Selection/Approval Process 5.1 Selection procedure When assessing a student s application for The Hospital Research Foundation/TQEH Department Postgraduate Research Scholarship the following are taken into account by the research program panel/overarching 2014 Basil Hetzel Institute (BHI) Scholarship Selection Committee: academic merit postgraduate clinical training, where relevant the quality of the proposed research the suitability of the intended supervisor, and Department the suitability of the applicant for research training publications and highly relevant work experience 5.2 Offers On behalf of the BHI Selection Committee the Director of Research or a delegate will, at the appropriate time: offer awards to applicants, advise of the conditions and benefits to which they are entitled. Where The Hospital Research Foundation/TQEH Department Postgraduate Research Scholarship provides half of a University of Adelaide Divisional Scholarship, the offer will be made by the Adelaide Graduate Centre Reporting The Director of Research, BHI reports to the relevant quarterly meeting of The Institute (BHI) Policy Committee on the progress and outcome of The Hospital Research Foundation/TQEH Department Postgraduate Research Scholarship Award processes. Enquiries and Information Information about scholarship opportunities at TQEH will be made available to relevant Schools/Faculties at Adelaide University, the University of South Australia and Flinders University of South Australia. Conditions of Award This Award will be known as The Hospital Research Foundation Postgraduate Research Scholarship. The Award is tenable for twelve months only. Awardees will, with the assistance of their supervisors, be expected to seek other stipend support for the subsequent years of their degree. Research is to be undertaken predominantly within TQEH on a full-time basis. Evidence that enrolment has been accepted by the University is required before stipend payments will commence. An award holder shall commence study within such time as the University shall allow. New stipend rates come into effect for all new and continuing Award holders on 1 January each year. Basil Hetzel Institute Postgraduate Research Scholarship holders in 2014 will: receive a stipend of $25,392 per annum (full-time) (2014 Australian Postgraduate Award rate); and be exempt from taxation under Section 23(z) of the Income Assessment Act 1936; Basil Hetzel Institute Postgraduate Research Scholarship holders are required to attend at least two-thirds of all of the basic science and related research seminars held weekly from April to November 2014 in the Institute. Award holders are permitted to: obtain funds from other sources for fieldwork, equipment or other expenses not covered by the award; obtain funding for overseas travel costs from other Australian Government awards or any other source; and receive minor awards, allowances or other earnings which are supplementary to the Scholarship, or income derived from limited part-time work undertaken within the guidelines set by the Adelaide Health Service. Work undertaken must not interfere with a student s study program. Students are required to submit an abstract for presentation at the annual TQEH Research Day in the 2 nd and 3 rd years of their higher degree. Students are required to submit a copy of their thesis to TQEH Research Secretariat. 6 Appendix I: Applicant eligibility requirements 1. To be eligible for a TQEH Research Foundation Postgraduate Research Scholarship, an applicant must fulfil the following conditions: (a) be an Australian citizen; or have been granted permanent resident status by 28 October 2013 or be an overseas student holding a valid student visa; (b) be a medical or dental graduate eligible for registration in South Australia, or an appropriately qualified science graduate or health professional eligible for enrolment in a University higher degree; (c) enrol to undertake a Masters or Doctoral degree in 2014; (d) enrol as a full-time student; (e) negotiate a research training place and an appropriate supervisor within a TQEH Department, and be predominantly based at TQEH. This normally occurs as part of the Postgraduate Research Scholarship application process. 2. Any research of a collaborative nature with University Departments outside of TQEH or with other organisations will need terms and conditions to be documented in a research agreement and attached to the Scholarship application.
